quote:I agree with Alec on this, (and feel the need to stick my head in a pot of boiling water for doing so,) the only difference is that I've known this since he started his whole stupid masquerade and have commented upon it while he went on about his whole "saved by Jesus" and "God loves you" routines. Except for the part about being beneath contempt. Nobody is beneath contempt. -------------------- ??? ?????? ???? ????? Posts: 883 | Registered: Wednesday, October 19 2005 07:00 |

Saying that he 'can't not quote it' means that he must quote it. Power metal is fast-paced, upbeat metal. Heavy on the solos, oftentimes including two guitarists and/or a keyboardist to trade 'dueling' solos. Less focused on riffing than heavy metal, most power metal band's riffs are boring at best and cheesy at worst. Drums are an instrument that is payed great attention to, all the more necessary to bring the feeling of 'upbeatness'. Singing in power metal is where the most attention is spent, with fantasy-themed lyrics being most common. I could keep going all day, but all one really needs to do to understand a genre of music is to listen to bands that play it. So here is a list of what i consider to be good power metal: Avantasia, Blind Guardian, Dark Moor, DragonForce, Hammerfall, Kamelot, Luca Turilli, Nightwish, Nocturnal Rites, Rhapsody, Sonata Arctica, and Stratovarius. -------------------- ??? ?????? ???? ????? Yea, that's one of the things that makes them 'unique' :P . They carry "fantasy-themed lyrics" to a whole new level. -------------------- ??? ?????? ???? ????? Posts: 883 | Registered: Wednesday, October 19 2005 07:00 |

Meh, I doubt it, it's not like power metal or Rhapsody is being slighted. It's just that the legality of it is just so screwed up. At least I won't be changing their name in my music files. -------------------- ??? ?????? ???? ????? Posts: 883 | Registered: Wednesday, October 19 2005 07:00 |

Ok, it's not so much that the name was changed that gets me. It's that, apparently, anyone can find a name that isn't trademarked or copyrighted or whatever, copyright it and force anybody who was previously using the name to change their name. -------------------- ??? ?????? ???? ????? quote: quote:It wasn't just a subtitle. They were forced to change their name. Even though the band was around years before the program. WTF? I know that they are allowed to do it, but can't a judge see through all the bull**** and say "tough luck, they were around before your company was even thought up"? quote:Obviously you've been listening to too much nu metal. Real metal is far from formulatic and tuneless, and "gratingly loud" is subjective. Metal and punk have just about nothing to do with one another. When a metal band does start including punk, it is quicly labled a sellout and therefore not 'true' metal by any metalheads*. Speed metal is a sub-subgenre of thrash metal that is less brutal than thrash metal (sort of along the lines of bay area thrash), yet more extreme than power metal. Bands that fall into this category would be along the lines of early Helloween, Angel Dust, early Blind Guardian etc. As you are a fan of progressive rock, I suggest you listen to bands such as Rush, Queensrÿche, Echosilence, Dream Theater and Opeth. Five very good (wow, subjective, it must be true, though because someone said it.) bands, the first two, progressive hard-rock, the third, modern jazz/progressive metal, the fourth, progressive metal and the fifth progressive metal/death metal. As a drummer myself, I know how difficult and, in numerous cases, impossible for someone who has been drumming for seven years, songs by those artists can be to play. . *I use the term metalhead to describe a person who listens to and only to metal. Stratovarius - Playing With Fire Final Countdown - Norther Deliverance - Opeth Dante's Inferno - Iced Earth Sirenia - Sister Nightfall Sonata Arctica - Mary Lou Soilwork - The Analyst Queensrÿche - Empire Poisonblack - Love Infernal Nightwish - 10th Man Down. I couldn't pick 10 favorite songs, so I picked 10 bands and chose at random. I would like my list as a playlist. @Stug: Metal was invented in the late 60's, it has evolved far, far from the same old cookie-cutter bands found in pop or rock. Lots of bands do sound similar, but musical experimentation can always find a home in metal. -------------------- ??? ?????? ???? ????? Posts: 883 | Registered: Wednesday, October 19 2005 07:00 |

quote:As are girls. Hermaphrodyte is the correct term for someone who is both male as well as female. Androgynous, if you prefer, though as far as I know that comes from an old Semitic language, I think Babylonian. Asexual is the opposite (neither male nor female). Or tumtum for those of us who prefer old Semitic (this time, I think Hebrew).
