Yeah, I like it. I don't think is so bad. Better than Thundercross :) .

What's the problem, then?

My reaction, in three words: What the hell.

I listen to Rhapsody, and I like the music very much. Rhapsody is a good name, Rhapsody of Fire is too long. That's the problem with the name.

For the rest i don't give a damn about the name, only about the music, which, generally, is good.

It wasn't just a subtitle. They were forced to change their name. Even though the band was around years before the program.

WTF?

I know that they are allowed to do it, but can't a judge see through all the bull**** and say "tough luck, they were around before your company was even thought up"?

I see. Well, like Tharlni, why care much about it? The importance is the music.

If they're still making the same music, I don't care if they're called "Rhap", or "Rhapsody Singing Along With Saint Martin In The Fields On A Nice Spring Morning With A Picnic Basket Besides Them"

Ok, it's not so much that the name was changed that gets me. It's that, apparently, anyone can find a name that isn't trademarked or copyrighted or whatever, copyright it and force anybody who was previously using the name to change their name.

Meh, I doubt it, it's not like power metal or Rhapsody is being slighted. It's just that the legality of it is just so screwed up.

At least I won't be changing their name in my music files.

I just recently started to like this band. Their lyrics are sort of stupid and the singer's accent is sometimes a bit much, but I like the general sound of their songs.

And yeah, that's pretty strange that they had to change their name.

Yea, that's one of the things that makes them 'unique' :P .

They carry "fantasy-themed lyrics" to a whole new level.

Oh yeah, and the main singer is Italian, you know?

Kel, can I suggest to listen "Lamento Eroico"?. Is a lyric in italian.

Yeah, I agree with that. Its not the singing I like (I hate it, its horrible), its not the lyrics I like (half of it I can't understand proparlky anyway, and the half that I do understand just sounds rather stupid), but the sound is very good. I like it for being so melodical. If i want some music which isn't to heavy, like System of a down, Trivium or Chimaira, and I don't want something to nice and friendly, like general classical music, I listen to Rhapsody or Kamelot.

Saying that he 'can't not quote it' means that he must quote it.

Power metal is fast-paced, upbeat metal. Heavy on the solos, oftentimes including two guitarists and/or a keyboardist to trade 'dueling' solos. Less focused on riffing than heavy metal, most power metal band's riffs are boring at best and cheesy at worst. Drums are an instrument that is payed great attention to, all the more necessary to bring the feeling of 'upbeatness'. Singing in power metal is where the most attention is spent, with fantasy-themed lyrics being most common.

I could keep going all day, but all one really needs to do to understand a genre of music is to listen to bands that play it. So here is a list of what i consider to be good power metal:
Avantasia, Blind Guardian, Dark Moor, DragonForce, Hammerfall, Kamelot, Luca Turilli, Nightwish, Nocturnal Rites, Rhapsody, Sonata Arctica, and Stratovarius.

Another recent trademark thing happened at http://www.oddtodd.com . He had a game called the "(Bad) Memory Game" which was basically a card-matching game. Hasbro threatened to sue him unless he changed the name. More info here: http://www.oddtodd.com/hasbro2.html

I think you forgot probably the most important thing about power metal, and that is what makes it unique: it uses classical instruments (albeit most of the time playted by synthesizers and samplers). Now THAT is what makes power metal for me what it is: wonderful.

Now what i said earlier about the singing and the lyrics only applies to Rhapsody, as kamelot often does it better (certainly the singing).

magmadragoon: what i meant with the sound, is mostly how the instruments played. You know, the overall sound.

Infernal: what you said previously about finding an untrademarked name and forcing others too get rid of their names, is, well, fair. Its pathetic, maybe, that you want to reserve that name only for you (though that's more then understandable when you are a company that wants to make money), but you can turn it around, you see: Rhapsody was being quite stupid for not trademarking it themselves (which I really think they are. Stupid, that is).

I would bet that this dispute never went as far as a judge's decision; a trial would have cost a hell of a lot more than a name change. Filing or defending a lawsuit is rarely a practical option for anyone who isn't loaded with money. Capitalism is A-OK until it hurts someone you care about, eh?

Microsoft got sued over the use of Internet Explorer as a name and coughed up some money when they saw they might actually lose. Of course for them it's easier to now pay for all the criminal actions they've done to get them settled.
