No, it's the Type Flag field, I think. When you put 999 into it, it changes into a smaller number.

Why is attempted murder illegal? in General

Interesting.

Why is attempted murder illegal? From a practical point of view it seems a reasonable law to me. Otherwise I could theoretically aim at someone's building with my own airplane and get a chance to try again if I miss.

Planning someone's murder is another thing. It's difficult to draw the lines on what's planning and what's joking (for example) and it's difficult to prove such things. It may be a bit closer to a "thought crime".

In Exile, treasures dropped by monsters are more random. I miss that feature in Avernum because it made each game a bit more unique.

I once heard somewhere that certain events happen earlier if you have completed certain quests. I think in some circumstances the tower of magi quest happened before day 160.

I doubt internet surveillance has increased because of 9/11.

The Intensification of Surveillance - Crime, Terrorism and Warfare in the Information Age edited by Kirstie Ball and Frank Webster, contains articles that claim that surveillance has increased after&because of 9/11 and suspect that it has also on the internet. It was published in 2003, though. (I had to read that for a sociology course some time ago.)

The introduction chapter says, among other things:
"The presumption is that terrorists exhibit patterns of behaviour that can be identified by ‘data mining’ many diverse and apparently mundane activities which are subject to surveillance of one sort or another."

Yeah, there's always been surveillance, but it's increasing, and the growth has accelerated since 9/11 (2001). Surveillance can be used, for example, in advertising. It's not always invisible.

In England, someone whom I know personally wrote an email in Gmail to her teacher about a threatening miscarriage and asked for extra time to return her essays because of it. Immediately after she had sent the email, she saw two advertisements on the Gmail mailbox page, one advertising grief counseling, the other baby funerals(?)... Something along the lines of "Come to this page to mourn your baby! Free trial!"

I find it disgusting that one's private medical information is used by corporations (or anyone) in this way. Of course, it's the system we live in, although I refuse to believe that there are no alternatives to it.

Beta Testers Wanted: 2 scenarios in Blades of Exile
Warrior

OK. They are both small scenarios, but there's no great rush to get them released. (It took me two years to make them...) As long as they make it to the next contest... So, if you have time to test them next month, it should be fine

1. New Market City.

This is a utility scenario that you can use to train single party members and whole parties, and to waste excess money between two scenarios.

(The previous utility scenario I made was A Shopping Scenario, but that may have been the first scenario I made.)

2. Desperate Moves.

Short description: Duke Kashron is desperate to protect his duchy. You must win the hearts of a goblin army to his side or find another way to expand his small army.

This scenario is more in the category of "comedy" or "parody".

The last "real" scenario I made was The Leaving. This one is not quite similar. The puzzles are hopefully not as "annoying" to some players as in The Leaving.

I'm looking for beta testers for my two scenarios.

1. New Market City (a utility scenario)

2. Desperate Moves (a "real" scenario with abt 11 towns. It's slightly puzzle-oriented.)

The beta versions should be ready in a week, if nothing catastrophic happens.

If you want to test, tell me your email address, your name (will appear in the credits) and operating system. Also mention which scenario you want to test, or both.

Likewise.

I've recently played BoE at least as much as BoA. Not much, I admit, but then there haven't been so many new scenarios for BoE recently.

I downloaded the first Exile games from Mac software Hyperarchive, and with them came an advertisement about the website. It was around 1997-8. I think.

Is illegal downloading such a bad thing? in General

For me, piracy isn't a black-and-white issue.

I mean: Being illegal doesn't make a thing wrong automatically. The essential question for me is why a thing is illegal.

When I was small, it was completely legitimate to make copies of recordings on cassettes and share them with friends. It wasn't called "stealing", at least where I live.

If you steal a car, that's taking someone's material property. However, if you "steal" (make illegal COPIES of) software or a song, it is not exactly the same thing. The act of you making the copy doesn't cost anything to those who made the original.

Still, the way capitalism works, the maker of the song or software doesn't usually get much money from just one original piece of work. So, selling copies is needed to keep a software designer in business. That's why I consider it necessary to support software designers by buying games.

On the other hand, the same economical system strives to prevent people from sharing knowledge and resources around the world, when it could be done practically without costs to anyone.

In any case, drawing lines on where making copies is bad is not a simple thing. When it comes to copyrighted plant seeds (you can "copy" those, too!), the widening concept of "stealing" definitely goes too far, in my opinion. On the issue of piracy, my opinion is more complicated.

I'd like to submit a scenario but probably won't, unless I get a sudden inspiration.

(Then again, even if I did get an inspiration, the birth of my baby might stop the scenario-making process this week. :) )

The shareware barrier was exactly in the same place in BoE as it was in BoA. However, it was not a bad thing when I played BoE. I thought VoDT was good (though not excellent) but the other two scenarios were slightly disappointing (though not bad). I also thought they were too small.

Hmm. When I first played a few custom scenarios many years ago, I also thought they didn't match the quality of Vogel's scenarios. Since then, however, there have been new inventions in BoE scenario designing over time and I'd say the quality of the best scenarios has improved.

Still, if I was a new player, I couldn't say if I prefered any of them to the default scenarios, because I now have 10 years of experience of playing, and play differently from how I used to. And different designers have different styles that might require getting used to.

It would be interesting to do a research of all Blades players, not just the ones who write on the forums. Because if I design a BoE scenario and have it beta tested here and it gets rated on the Lyceum, it's naturally impossible to know how well those opinions reflect players' opinions in general.

Humans were just a part of the dish reproduction cycle. I may have mangled this idea somewhat.

An interesting idea. :) Stanislaw Lem has also written some science fiction about a similar subject (= alien life, how to recognize it and human reactions to it). Solaris might be the most famous of his books (on the subject).

A couple little bugs more (not very serious problems):

1. In the main menu, when I click "custom scenario" and then click "cancel", I get a strange message: "this scenario was created by BoE v2.0 or later and can't be run using this copy..."

2. When I open a save file by dragging it on top of the BoE icon, it does the same thing as clicking "load game", except that it doesn't open anything that I choose.

.bmp files can be opened with Quicktime (or Preview, for example). Sometimes the picture has to be shown in its right size when you copy it.

Open Rezilla, make a new resource map (named ___.meg) and paste. If there are other resources than ones named "pict", I'd remove them.

Select the pict resource, "get info" from the menu and change ID to 1.

I tried a couple of scenarios on Khoth's BoE release 4 with my iBook G4 using 10.3.9.

It seems that the font in talking dialogue box and main menu buttons is different than what it used to be. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing. Otherwise, it seems to work fine (except that I also got an extra title bar after the second splash screen).
