I'll get BoE 11-16. EDIT: Done. From where I left off to "The Scenario Ranking Contest!!" EDIT 2: I might as well finish it off. BoE 17-19 and 23-25, I go get now. EDIT 3: Done, through "Chains" on 19 and from "DBZ SCENARIO!!!" to "Need help; Blade of Inns" (23-25). I couldn't get the poll on BoE page 25 in the thread "Favourite strategy", though. Anyone who voted in that wanna get it? [ Saturday, August 14, 2004 20:05: Message edited by: Kelandon ] Posts: 7968 | Registered: Saturday, February 28 2004 08:00 |

I can only say that I hope this topic gets locked very quickly, because otherwise some serious abuse will break out. GIFTS, if you really want to have this discussion, PM one of the, er, kinder and more parental members of these boards. I'm not completely sure who that is offhand, but I think you can figure it out. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Yeah, in the past half-hour, I got BoE 2-10, from "Burned to the Ground" to "stuck in Nightjade". I feel like an idiot for not realizing how to do this sooner. Posts: 7968 | Registered: Saturday, February 28 2004 08:00 |

Dear god, yes. I just did BoE 2-4 in however few minutes that was. The way I'm doing it is that I control-click on the link from the main page (ie from page 4, I control-click on the thread link that says "Emulations [blah blah]"), which pulls up a contextual menu. From there, I choose Download Link to Disk. This seems to grab the page without ever having to view it. For whatever reason, this is going literally at least ten times faster. This may work on a PC, too, if you right-click. I don't know. I think right-clicking in Windows is roughly equivalent to control-clicking on a Mac. And yeah, I'm getting the occasional server-related problem too. EDIT: Heck, I'll get BoE 5-10, too. This is bloody easy now. Well, there are the obvious issues about trying to sneak in somewhere and trying not to be seen. Back entrances are hard to find, usually have strange locks or require keys, may lead to wrong places, and have all sorts of other problems. The whole prospect of getting caught is a big deal, too: a small number of people infiltrating one area have to avoid detection, and do they really know the routines of the guards that well? Of course, it depends a lot on what sort of stealth you had in mind. Are they sneaking into a building or sneaking across an entire range of enemy territory? -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Uh, you need to get the individual threads, too, not just the front pages. It's not THAT easy. EDIT: Wait, hold on. I am a fool. I just figured out a MUCH faster way of doing this. I might be able to equal that speed. I claim, er, something in BoE. 2-4. [ Saturday, August 14, 2004 18:02: Message edited by: Kelandon ] Posts: 7968 | Registered: Saturday, February 28 2004 08:00 |

Aran, you may wish to re-read (and re-think) the topic just a tad. Thuryl was the one who linked you to another topic. I am just as confused as you. FBM is referring to the fact that most banned members (SM comes to mind) have a custom title of "BANNED" or something along those lines. So yes, in that way the general public is notified of bans. But no, that "hint" to which you refer is just UBB being weird. It shows up rather a lot. Posts: 7968 | Registered: Saturday, February 28 2004 08:00 |

The docs are missing any sort of decent tutorial. The docs work well for people at two levels: knowing how everything works and just needing one or two details on a call, or people who know absolutely nothing whatsoever (and it's not even terribly good at the latter). There's no connection between the two levels of not knowing anything and knowing how to do everything. BoE-ers are lucky because we understand the concepts at work here, but anyone who's never touched the BoE Scenario Editor is at a serious disadvantage. There is no tutorial, no real intro beyond, "Hey, scripting works by calls, and you have to paint terrain in scenarios, too." It frustrates the hell out of me, but I think we the community have to make this tutorial ourselves. If it doesn't get done by someone else in the next few months, I'll probably do it myself. Everything will also be much easier when we have more BoA scenarios whose scripts we can examine. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Wait, hold on. Your server gives you UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH. *notes this away for the next discussion of whether to update BoA with a new version or not, since I no longer have any sympathy for the "It eats up a whole lot of expensive bandwidth" argument* -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. quote:Um, no. I just re-played A2 to be sure. To get to the river that you're talking about, you travel to the northest corner of Formello and go straight DOWN. In order to get to the river I was talking about, you would have to go substantially south and east from Formello. Go ahead and use them. That's what they're there for. The man who posted this topic, Brett Bixler by name, is the one who runs the Louvre, and basically you submit by e-mailing him (I bring up that topic because he's going to be gone for a week). There is a submission form here (or just click on "Add to the Database" on the front page). -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. There are a couple of vahnatai PC graphics over in the Louvre (like this one and this one, for instance). As for the "face" pics... BoA has some nice ones. To access them, download the demo of Blades of Avernum, open up the Scen Icon Graphics (in Blades of Avernum Files using ResEdit if you're on a Mac, something else if you're on a PC, don't know), and look at numbers 1913 and 1914. You'll probably have to resize them, which any paint application can probably do. Then you have to paste them in the appropriate places in the Avernum game that you're playing, but I assume that you already know how to do this. If you need instructions on that, too, just ask. (Also mention your operating system, because it matters.) EDIT: You could also get some B & W pics out of Avernum 2 Art, but these would definitely need to be cropped. Micael, one could reasonably make the point that Rentar-Ihrno ought to be mentioned in any scenario that calls itself a "sequel" to A3, because it is an unresolved part of the plotline. However, such a scenario would have to be: huge, because each Avernum game was huge, and I'm not just talking about forty towns or so, but at least a hundred towns with at least forty outdoor sections;damn good, or else it's a horrible idea to make something so huge, because if it's bad people will waste huge amounts of their time playing it and hate you afterwards, and besides, one wouldn't want to botch the Avernum plotline worse than A3 already did;therefore probably written by a very experienced designer, because virtually no matter what, first scenarios are not very good, as we can see from BoE because even the greatest scenario designers had somewhat flawed first efforts (Spy's Quest, On A Ship to Algiers, etc);I'm writing a scenario that takes place after A3, but it doesn't try to be a sequel to A3. It takes one subcomponent of the plot (the sliths and their fate) and focuses on that. I never mention Rentar-Ihrno because she would be completely out of place in my scenario. (I do make one rather veiled reference to the vahnatai's revenge in A3, but it's appropriate and kind of funny. :P ) Any first effort that includes Rentar-Ihrno as a character -- she wasn't that great of a character to begin with, anyway, so why would you want to include her? -- is almost doomed to failure from the start. I think this is because the most common reasons for wanting to include her are that people like the Avernum storyline, and they want to continue it, which is all well and good, but they frequently don't pay enough attention to what has already been established; in order to write a good scenario with Rentar, one would need to re-play A2 and A3 or at least read over all of her dialogue again to get a feel for her personality, and then one would have to examine her motives very thoroughly and keep her from becoming a stock villain. Such thoroughness and developed character exploration are very uncommon in new designers. Thus, generally, including Rentar-Ihrno in a first effort is a bad idea. And besides, if you mishandle Rentar, Drakey will hate you. :P [ Friday, August 13, 2004 10:15: Message edited by: Kelandon ] -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I'm going to sleep soon. At the very least, I think we should save General. GF1 and GF2 are probably lower priorities, but some parts of BoE might be worthwhile for historical reasons, and some parts of the Avernum Trilogy are nice. Anyway, if people can grab the rest of General (6-9), that would be great. I am TEH SLEEPIE and shall retire. I think BoE should be our next priority after General. I heartily second the first suggestion (an interesting turn of phrase), if TM is saying what I think he is, namely to check whether a space is proper for a creature to be on at all -- the call is_blocked sounds frustratingly similar to this, but it's not at all. The new call would check whether the space or terrain type was blocked also. As for the second, though, char_on_spot and char_on_loc do this, if I'm understanding that post correctly. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
