I disagree with Excalibur on many details, but an actual list of changes that would help is a very important first step. As for living spoiled lives, well, you're using a computer with internet access to post this. You've got fancy gadgets, electricity, free time, and probably the money that usually goes with all that. Why not give it all up, sell whatever you can on eBay, and donate the proceeds to improving the world? We may not deserve the largesse we've been given by life, but that doesn't mean we're obligated not to enjoy it. —Alorael, who tries to consume wisely and in moderation. He, however, does not think he wants to live on 70¢ per day. Actually, he's pretty sure most Nicaraguans would rather have money too. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Gymnastics makes you dodge better and makes you move faster in combat. In other words, yes, it's like Dexterity. Once you've bought one point you can train in Gymnastics like any other skill, but it's a good idea to buy the five points you can get for coins first. Five points of Gymnastics for all your party makes a significant difference. Everyone will go much earlier in combat order and your fighters can easily become almost untouchable. —Alorael, who believes an early version of Avernum in fact allowed over 100% dodge. He's not certain invulnerability by Gymnastics was fixed, either. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Is the American government misspending money? Yes. If you can vote, you can try to do something about it by electing better representatives. If you can't vote, you can still demonstrate and write angry letters and do all the standard attention-getting things. Are Americans misspending money individually? We have no right to tell people how to spend their money. We can like it or dislike it, but we can't mandate how personal wealth should be spent. [Edit: Africa's not a country. It's a lot of countries.] —Alorael, who puts some of that up to the endowment effect. It's fine not to let someone amass wealth (income tax), but it's much more difficult to let wealth be amassed and then seize or direct it. You like Runescape. Okay, we're happy for you, although some of us disagree with your views. None of that gives you the right to toss insults around, use homophobic language, or talk about Runescape constantly on another company's boards. You've been warned. Cease and desist. —Alorael, who wonders what's been put in the internet's tubes to make Spiderweb get all irritating suddenly. There's a strong climate of September around. Are you entering it right? Go to the editor, and in the Advanced section choose the SDF or Stuff Done Flag option (I can't remember which it's called). In the first prompt enter the first number, in the second enter the second number, and in the third enter the third number. 12, 3, and 0 are all entered in separate prompts. —Alorael, who learned from plenty of fairy tales that you don't make the faeries angry. That trumps loot and kill RPG logic. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Nalyd and Nija, you need to stop spamming. Tully, you have already been told to stop posting that. —Alorael, who does not find either set of antics even remotely amusing. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Nija and Nalyd, you're spamming endlessly and ubiquitously. Stop it. —Alorael, who considers this an official warning and a peripheral RW casualty. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Iä! Iä! Richard White Ftaghn! But really, you can forget about all of that because you are actually only dreaming that GC2 has not absorbed your being entirely. —Alorael, whose implants told him yesterday (as of the day before yesterday) that he had no implants. That was helpful! During party creation, click on any of the pictures to change them. After your party is made, click the Use Ability button (or press U) and select one of the two options to change your pictures. —Alorael, who is in fact pretty sure that the hintbook doesn't cover aesthetics. You get the quest in the Castle, and you don't get it the first time you're there. Or the second. Or the third. —Alorael, who isn't quite sure how many visits it takes. It's plenty, though. Get used to the place. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I consider piracy "TM" and was thinking of borrowing someone else's copy, which is a bit tricky but doable with shareware. I didn't think of getting a free copy, but I consider that in the same spirit as buying. You may not pay money, but you have to do something to get it. —Alorael, who puts receiving it as a gift in the same category. Reverse engineering and recreating the game, on the other hand, is a truly distinct category. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

iWork still doesn't have everything that Appleworks did, and yes, I still use that venerable suite as well. But I also use NeoOffice and, occasionally, the real Microsoft Office. For the other things... I use Mail but am strongly considering switching to Firebird for security reasons, Safari and Firefox interchangeably, a mix of TextEdit and TextWrangler with the occasional Pages thrown in, the aforementioned mix of office clones, AIM and iChat, GraphicConverter (but Adobe Illustrator to doodle!), and the entertaining mix of iTunes, VLC, and mplayer/ffmpegX. OS X uses gzip just fine. —Alorael, who has never compressed with his bare hands. He has, however, brandished a rifle until his assorted disks and drives agreed to hold more data. Technically the full versions are hosted. You just have to pay for the code to unlock them. —Alorael, who likes that model. Among other benefits, you can look at the end of the game with ResEdit!
