Yeah, and since then I've been bacon. The irony here is that I'm underweight. :P

I now associate that pink rabbit suit with the latest villain in Scary Go Round. :P

(Also, I believe the bacon came first from a comment Salmon made on me becoming a moderator, not from Slarty's strip. But I may have causality mixed up.)

I didn't delete anything. I see that the only forum appears to have vanished mysteriously.

Database says the posts are still there, though.

Edit: Oh bugrit. Updated forum software, missed the database update. Here we go.

Slarty and Dikiyoba, just as a note, the forum structure hasn't been set up yet; we only have a test forum. I don't know what subforums you want, so I'll leave this to you. :)

And welcome back, after this brief commercial break of one year, to the Deathmatch Tournament!

Let's see those contestants then...

#1 Alorael vs. The Silent Assassin

A good match. Behold as the Assassin sneaks through the dark back alley, hunting his quarry. He moves with the grace of a shadow. No man could ever hear him coming.

Unfortunately, a laser scope does not depend on sound, and even a sneaky pedestrian is a pedestrian. This particular pedestrian is now a dead pedestrian. In a high up window, Alorael lowers his rifle and takes a swig from his hipflask.

#2 The Almighty Doer of Se---tuff vs. The Great, Brilliant and Awesomely Sexy Arancaytar who can kill you with PHP.

What bias?

Okay, recap. Basically, ADoS posts a browser-stretching picture of his nose, which I edit out through Piperbot (while using it in work-safe text-only mode). He then proceeds to sic his turtles on me. I can speak turtle.

t1, stop
t1, turn 180
t1, forward 10
t1, get ados
t1, kill
Things don't go uphill from there, at least from the Doer's point of view. Arancaytar wins the contest of ego-bloating.

#3 Goldenking

Goldenking: Hey, check this, I've got an aura of flames.
Drakefyre: Nifty. Looky here - ban button!

The ban button does not work on all creatures that walk this earth. Take Terror's Martyr, for example. Goldenking, unfortunately has no such power. Drakefyre wins.

#4 Ash Lael vs. Dintiradan

They both design nifty scenarios. However, Dintiradan has linking books. Enough said.

#5 Nemesis vs. Emperor Tullegolar

Oh come on.

What has that guy with the feather in the hat ever done except whine about the establishment and rant about canisters? Nemesis can beat him with ease.

#6 Zeviz vs. Stareye

Speaking of the Establishment. Lookie here - two honest totalitarians duking it out. Well, Zeviz undeniably has some pretty scary tricks up his sleeve. Some kind of Command&Conquer-esque Russian mind control beam, perhaps. He's got esprit up to here.

Stareye, however, has a boot.

He uses it to stomp Zeviz's face.

Forever.

#7 Student of Trinity vs. Salmon

I'll forego on the description of this match and just say that a fishing rod is not the weapon of choice when you want to fight off a black hole. The Student's control of the Hadron Collider proves very helpful.

#8 Jewels vs. Terror's Martyr

This one is really a tough decision. All bets are off. But I'm going with luck and pick the guy who's been banned more often. Terror's Martyr has lots of experience at not dying.

It's a heck of a lot easier than an encyclopedia of Ermarian, thanks to the non-existence of sub-canon. And we did that one all right.

This post added little.

And as far as I know, we were done here. The next round will be in a new topic. Stop sullying history.

I think we had a very, very nice arrangement a while back. You convince me, ET, that it was required.

... heh.

I think Bywater had a point in the beginning. Twenty years or not, he should have had the opportunity to weigh in, even if it was just to say "no comment, and if you publish one word I wrote, I'll sue". The story would still have been publishable, if without his plot outlines (in my opinion the best part), everyone would have been happy, more or less.

But instead of capitalizing on that - such as by privately demanding his part be taken down, or publically offering a better insight, he commented in a way that came across as arrogant and pompous. As one reader pointed out, he shot himself in the foot.

He had every right to take this with ill grace. But if he were savvy about communication, he would not have done so. With some of his comments, he confronted the audience more than Baio. One comment came across to me as "why are you idiots even interested in this? You're too young to have even been alive then!" Is it any surprise that the audience does not exactly take his side?

Via Slashdot I have found Andy Baio's blog on waxy.org. It appears that Baio has somehow acquired a backup of a network drive that used to belong to Infocom, the text adventure game studio that gave us The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in Zork form.

When I finished the game (which has floated around as abandonware for at least a decade) in 2001, I recall being disappointed that the sequel the ending credits promised had never been delivered.

Baio has taken some of the emails and design notes that were written between 1985 and 1989, and turned them into a stunning documentary that showed how Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe failed to get off the ground and was finally scrapped when Infocom died in 1989.

It's fascinating. Read it.

It's most definitely not worth it.

I mean, registering on the forum requires several hours of filling out background check forms, scheduling an interview to determine your eligibility for an account on the Ermarian Network, and paying an annual membership fee of a few hundred dollars. Seriously, if you aren't ready to make this your life's work, don't bother. :P

There is only a single, but critical problem with the concept of retribution.

You are more sensitive to harm that happens to you than harm that happens to someone else.

So, given this imbalance in perception, if everyone tries to make the other guy suffer just as much as he did, do you know what happens?

(Well, actually, what happens then is what happens right now in the Middle East. But what I was going for was the more poetical "global blindness" bit.)
