[PPP] Alas, friends, we look toward uncertain times in General

I received a polite message from my webhost an hour ago calling my attention to the ppp database, especially the table ppp_posts. This table, as an aside, contains all the content of the past 7 years that we have been able to save.

Unfortunately, it turns out that a shared MySQL server is not quite adequate to support the extreme load that the PPP puts on this vast table. I was given the choice to work to cut down the load, or upgrade my plan for a lot of money that I don't have.

The search feature, which was the main culprit (caused in part by some idiot spammer who thought putting his crappy URL into the search field would somehow make it publically available somewhere, but also just through general usage), has been permanently disabled. The Google site search is still there, so use that.

Long-term, I fear this may not be enough. I'm waiting for an update from my host on whether the load is reduced sufficiently, but if it hasn't, we have a problem.

If that happens, I basically only have two choices. I can suspend the site until I have time to optimize it properly. When I cobbled it together in 2006, I paid absolutely no attention to scale (no need back then), and I have no real experience with optimizing a database. Until around May, I have no time to work that heavily on the Ermarian Network. The other choice is to make the site donation-, ad-, or (if that doesn't work) subscription-supported.

I hope it doesn't have to come to any of these, and I will do my best to keep access uninterrupted and free.

-Aran

The 666th post seems as good an end as any.

I will restart the thread in a while, but in order to avoid incurring the wrath of Great UBB, I am consigning this topic to its well-deserved rest.

Thank you Cpt. O. sir. Now read my first post.

In other news, Huckabee is praying for a miracle. Whether he is praying for the laws of mathematics to get up and walk away, or for McCain to have a coronary is not quite clear. Either of those would conceivably give him a chance. :P

(Although Bush just endorsed McCain. So who knows.)

Edit: Obama won Maine and closed the gap (according to CNN) to 27 delegates. Before Saturday, said gap was around 95.

I find it kind of scary that Huckabee is our Republican section's favorite.

This accurately matches the "internet extremist" theory, however.

By the way, is this written in ignorance of Romney's evolution, or a reference to him?

To him, among others. I find it amusing that Romney seems to earn as much criticism from the right for speaking out for abortion and gay marriage fourteen bloody years ago as he earns from the left for opposing them now.

It is amusing that one of the voters in this poll appears to have registered as a democrat in order to vote on a democratic candidate, then as a republican to vote on a republican - does this work with the real primaries too? :P

Question 1:
10 democrats
4 republicans
12 independent

Question 2:
9 democrats
5 republicans
12 independent

Scope of Ethics in General
Law Bringer
Member # 2984

If you asked "how much control should your ethics have over your actions", and define "ethics" as values that you genuinely believe everyone, including you, has to follow, and "actions" as ones that you do knowingly and in full possession of wits, the answer will always be "complete" - it already does, by definition.

What does it imply if you do an action that you yourself would describe as unethical?

You have determined, rationally or emotionally or instinctively, that there is a circumstance that justifies the action and takes precedence over the rule - this may be "he insulted my girlfriend" overruling your value of "Thou shalt not beat up people", or "he was coming at me with a knife" overruling "Thou shalt not kill", or "I just really want a cookie" overruling "Thou shalt not stuff Thyself with sweets because Thy deity hates fat people".

In all these cases, the ethics can be reworded more accurately to reflect what circumstances (which you knew all along, if not consciously) would make you violate them.

Or, to summarize, if you violate your own ethics willingly, that means you didn't genuinely believe you should follow them, which means they weren't your own ethics in the first place. This doesn't excuse "unethical" (in the view of others) behavior of course, because if your real ethics do not reflect the real ethics that society can usually agree on (don't lie, steal, rape, hurt, kill), you may be a danger to said society.

Ironically, it would more or less prevent him getting shot anywhere else. I believe this was called the Quayle effect, which Bush successfully recycled with Cheney.

In other circles, it is called "good cop, bad cop".

Thank you for clearing that up.

As a more direct answer to your question, his support is young and Internet-based. Why, I have no idea. But that's who it is.
I already heard something to that effect, but I more or less disbelieved it before because I expected the "young, internet-based" segment to vote more liberally on average. I have yet to see a forum whose Political Compass mean does not lie in the third quadrant.

The former. Given that Bush has twice won an election, "guarantee" is a very dangerous word. I'd rather have McCain than allow the faintest chance to Huckabee or Paul.

Incidentally, can someone tell me what part of the spectrum Ron Paul's grassroots support comes from? He gets a solid 17% of the popular vote on Slashdot, which is kind of unusual for someone who has been quoted on both being an anti-abortionist and a creationist, and who is said to have published a magazine with racist remarks once. Who is that guy?

I'm trying to make this one as complete as possible. I know that some of the candidates are without chances and Romney has actually conceded a while ago, but they're still in here.
