Extremely creative, mildly glitchy, wonderful atmosphere, interesting though not quite balanced gameplay, pretty good story. 9.0 -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

It doesn't meet Exile II's standards either in terms of atmosphere/story or technically, but it has its own brilliant parts, like the Abyss, and the scattered rumors of the First Expedition. It transfigured the fading Ultima IV paradigm into something more personable and more enduring. Enduring and honest innovation is worth more to me than technical perfection is. 8.5 -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

A2 has the good story of E2, and the interface niceties of Avernum. Unfortunately, a lot of those niceties interfere with the atmosphere, the single greatest thing about E2. If I hadn't played Exile 2 first I might rate it higher, but given that I did: 8.0. -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

There's one major flaw with this survey. It only counts people who, after visiting the forums, STAY ON as members. Granted, most brief visitors probably aren't affected one way or the other, but there are a LOT of them, and they are the ones most likely to be undecided about downloading demos. I have to guess that there are a lot of random visitors who follow the link off the main spiderweb site. If I pop into Blades of Avernum and see people talking about the scenarios that have been made, it might make me want to download the demo. If I pop into Geneforge and see people who are so interested in the game that they are trying to deconstruct the underlying game mechanics, it might make me want to download the demo. If, on the other hand, I get the impression that SW fans are the kind of people who make spammy posts, mock the personal beliefs of other people, and use hate language left and right -- then I might think "gee, am I really going to like a game that appeals to these people?" I think that's a lot more damaging than critical discussion of the games is. IMHO, gracious mods, enforcing the code of conduct would be the best way to make these boards more conducive to selling the games. -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

Well, you've played more scenarios than I have, I'm sure, but I think that's a fair estimate. Maybe not better than 90% of the good scenarios, but think about all the ones on the "First Attempts" table (if it even exists anymore). There are certainly scenarios that I think are more fun and better crafted. There are just more that definitely, categorically, aren't. I wasn't implying any kind of percentility. That was a coincidence. C'mon, TM. -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

Since this post appears to be sticking around: I'm with Jeff on this one. I hope that someone directly involved in the situation will explain what happened and why it happened. Otherwise there is just going to be speculation. I don't want to spread rumours. But I would suggest that the rest of us wait to hear the whole story of what prompted the ban -- always an unfortunate event -- before crying foul. I'll start. My favorite thing is definitely the unlimited bow ammunition, which makes archery the powerful tool it deserves to be. — Slartucker, who felt like being positive this evening -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

Actually, I thought it cast you in a likeable and personable light. And a somewhat accurate one, unlike Aran, who came out rather cynical considering how much more positive he is than most folks here. Anyway, expect to see more of Tyranicus in Slarty vs. Desk. -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

I get the feeling that, were E3 actually to show up as a BoE scenario, it would get very high marks (9.0ish) simply because, for all its annoying flaws, it's still better crafted and more fun than 90% of the scenarios out there. It does have some areas where it's sub-par even for a scenario, though, like the where's waldo feel of the characters. I agree with Ash and Thuryl's assessments, so I guess I'll give it a 6.5. (Edit: Screw U BB) A3 I would honestly rate lower. The standards seem a lot higher for BoA scenarios, and A3 didn't have the same technical advances or cool new features that E3 did.
