Custom Titles: How Did You Get Yours? in General
Mongolian Barbeque
Member # 1528

Holding a custom title myself, I've always wondered how others came by theirs. So if you have a custom title, please post here telling us how you got it!

People like Jeff don't need to post here — it's quite obvious how personages like him got theirs... Jeez, start your own shareware company and you get to pick your own title on the associated bulletin board... Some people get all the rummy luck.

I was bestowed mine, "Mongolian Barbeque," by distinguishing myself in the now defunct Galactic Core forum. Whoop-de-doo. Icshi, King of the Sandbox. Looks on my works, yet mighty, and despair, and all that.

There was a surreal and humorous historical contest around Christmas 2003 in that forum, and my entry was (surprise, surprise) about Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire. I tied for first place, and my prize was a custom title (not of my own choosing, though I do think it's a good one) that I still cherish dearly.

Beside waiting for GF3 what will you do during spring break? in Geneforge Series
Mongolian Barbeque
Member # 1528

I'm only a part-time college student now — I used to be full time, but then had health problems, had to leave early near the end of my second year, etc. (long story) — so in a way you could say that I'm always on spring break now, to a greater or lesser extent depending on what I'm involved in at any given time. Which makes the Filling of the Void of Time a high priority for me, hence etc. etc.

What no!!!!! Not next week!!!! I'll be away in Canada!!!

I bet GF3 will come out Wednesday, because I'll be out of town Thursday through Sunday. :( It's a conspiracy, I tell you.

And no, Silver Shadow, I'm not going to hurt anyone. All this waiting and despair has sucked the lifeforce out of me. :o Besides, my mom won't let me use those knives for anything but slicing up blocks of spam.

Some excellent advise there.

Personally, while I'm waiting, I'm going to adapt the first two Geneforge games into a 5-hour interpretive dance incorporating the moves, musical styles, and authentic ethnic costumes of the Kalmyk people. It will then be followed by a special 20-minute performance by Michael Flatley showcasing the current lines of speculative thought about GF3.

IMAGE(http://www.oiraty.com/img/img_b_73.jpg)

Queen's cakes and cream sodas will be sold during the intermission at exhorbitant prices. The manager will pretend that this money will go to charity. No cameras, please. All offers void except where prohibited. Reading the fine print will make you liable to a $600 fine and 10 months in prison.

<SHING!> <SHING!> (Icshi begins sharpening his Ginzu knives, which he ordered last week off of www.cheaptvcommericalgadgetry.com)

Yes, my mental heatlh has already begun taking the turn for the worst. I was really expecting GF3 today. :( Now it'll be Monday at the earliest. Soon the graemlins ( :D ) will complete their conquest of my posts, and my communiques will be rendered nothing more than bad immitations of Marcel Marceau. :P

Doctor's note: This is Icshi's personal physician. I apologize for any ungeltmanly behavior on my pateint's part. Be assured that we have him under close observation, but recognize the good done by letting him give occasional vent to his feelings in order to prevent any unfortunate incidents here at the clinic. We're on a tight budget as it is, and any unpleasantness such as walls being punctured, matresses set on fire, etc., would adversely affect the amount of my Christmas bonus. (I'm depending on this bonus to pay off my heavy gambling debts and finance my escape to Barbados.) We all expect the situation to imrpove some time next week. Until then, just humor him and don't maintain eye contact with him for longer than 5 seconds. Thank you for your cooperation.

Thanks for the advice. I'm glad to hear their fantasy output is better than their SF. Still, that wouldn't be too difficult, would it? :P But I may try to give the first 3 Dragonlance books a try when I finish with Salvatore's Cleric Quintet.

I mainly read fantasy books in bed before I go to sleep, to ration it to a chapter a night or so because his books are so good. I'm determined to make them all really last. It takes about one month to read one of his novels, so it'll be a while before I get a chance for Dragonlance.

Is there any connection between the Forgotten Realms world and the Dragonlance one? They seem to have advertisements for the latter in all the former books, though it may just be because they're from the same publisher.

I just have to sit back a moment and say that the postings in this forum are absolutely hilarious and a joy to read and participate in. :)

Student of Trinity, Mr. Knowitall, Hawk King, and Ornk of Death are real stars in this regard. Waiting has never been this much fun! I almost hope GF3 won't be out until early next week so we can enjoy a little more of all this zanny, hysterically desperate banter.

< ...stunned silence... >

"What?! You don't want GF3 to come out until next week? Have you lost your mind, Icshi? Heretic! Burn the heretic!!!"

Ouch! Watch where you point that thing! You could have someone's eye out with that.

Hey, hey! Cool it, folks! I said "almost," didn't I?

In point of fact if GF3 doesn't come out soon, at the current rate of increase within a few days my new posts will become nothing but graemlin faces... So the maintaince of my mental health is a large factor in all this. So I do want it to come out tomorrow. Really I do!

What can I say? We're so far ahead of our time that it staggers the imagination!

Yes, I hope we don't crash the server. That would be just awful. After all this waiting, and then just as it's downloading FOOM! The server is destroyed, along with Jeff's computer, and GF3 is lost forever.

How many new sects you expect to see in GF3 ? in Geneforge Series

I think 5 would be a nice managable number. Any more would be a bit too confusing.

Would what be really nice is you start out with 4 sects, and then somewhere along the line one of them splits in two. But that would take a lot of extra scripting so probably won't happen. Pity.

As a break from my normal posting pattern of late — in which I scribble pathetic, unintelligent, and unintelligible squeaks and squawks of risible desperation for GF3 — I've decided to participate in this very excellent discussion now that I've actually thought of something to say.

Another reason why the PC may gain levels so quickly is that both games took place in a sort of "wilderness" region, either not wholly tamed (GF2), or neglected and bobby-trapped galore (GF1). These are hardly ordinary circumstances — I'm sure most Shaper populations live in more civilized areas. It's the "frontiersmen," and those sent to the frontiers to investigate matters, who gather a lot of experience through short stints of hacking out a place in this new region, then defending what they've created. The PC is such an "investigator" in both games, an ordinary person thrown into this wild circumstance. Of course, this PC must have exceptional, untapped potential to start with in order to make the story more involving — if they were just a non-"frontiersman" Joe Schmuck who wandered into a situation like this, they'd get pulverized and eaten within the first few hours. I know I would. That wouldn't make a very good game. (Skippy the Bush Kangaroo mentioned this point above, but I felt the need to reiterate it.)

The fact that these frontiersmen themselves must be hearty folk is demonstrated by their very presence there, within cities that they built out in the middle of nowhere. So your short (either a few days or a few weeks, depending on how you interpret how time "passes" inside the game) but intense stint of action in their area may be nothing too far out of the ordinary. The fact that you're doing most of this alone — whilst they did it in large groups with the proper equipment, weapons, etc. — concentrates all this experience in the PC. In fact, this is nicely demonstrated with Shapers with lots of creations with them; the experience is spread out among you all, so less is concentrated in each. If these "frontiersmen" had likewise done such things by themselves they may also have reached such heights, and they're probably aware of this. They also took a greater amount of time to do what they did — whereas the PC rushes around like a glaahk with its stinger cut off. There's probably a "threshold" point where your brief-and-intense accumulated experience surpasses their lengthy-and-spread-out accumulated experience. If you had accompanied these "frontiersmen" when they first came to settle the area, you would probably have remained at the same level they are. Likewise, the serviles on Sucia Island already had their living areas cleared out and set up, so all they had to do was maintain it — not exactly a potent experience-building activity, especially since the rogue epidemics on the island didn't begin until a few months before your arrival (courtesy of the Sholai & Goettsch).

Yes, you're right about the sarcophagi — two very similar concepts, which is probably why it was all so fuzzy in my mind at two in the morning. But it was GF in particular that I was thinking of that fateful, fretful night.

Amen to that, brother! I was rather irked in GF2 when I discovered the new Geneforge was racially segregated and was "For Drakons Only." That made me doubly inclined to join Barzahl and blast the living heck out of the whole filthy reptile den of iniquity.

Anyway, I have trouble separating the two games in my mind — they've become rather enmeshed together. For instance, I often think about a certain area in GF2 thinking it was in 1, and vice versa. I have to actually look at the maps in the hint books sometimes to figure out which area goes with which game. In other words, I really like both. I think their similarities was a strength in many ways, showing variations on a theme. As I've mentioned elsewhere the corruption of power is a topic that never grows old with me; I find it endlessly fascinating. I did enjoy how the stakes got bigger in GF2, and hopefully we'll see things get even more so in GF3.

I feel the same way. A few months after I played the first Geneforge game, I woke up in the middle of the night trying to remember which book I read that involved people augmenting themselves and being driven insane as a result. I thought about all the SF/fantasy books I'd read recently, with no results, then thought about which TV shows or movies I'd seen, with no results, then out of the blue it suddenly hit me that it was Geneforge! I felt really silly, but since it was the middle of the night I readily excused my silliness because that's the kind of thing that spins through your mind at 2:30 am. But I soon realized that I still consider Jeff's games more like interactive fantasy literature rather than a game per se, which speaks very highly of his story-telling skills and the overall quality of his games.

Can anybody predict what is the creature behind the big door? in Geneforge Series
Mongolian Barbeque

The mental image I've built up from the screenshot is that it's a creature that smells like cabbage, boasts of its exploits and mighty powers in words of 2 syllables or less, has a tendency to nod off every few minutes like a narcoleptic octogenarian, and in the middle of its ravings asks you politely if you could scratch that itchy spot on its back.

I really hope the creature in that screenshot is not the enigmatic creature that required "locked and warded" doors to restrain it, buried in the depths of a monster-infested laboratory complex. That would be, to say the very least, disappointing.

EDIT: In other words, I expect that thing in the screenshot to be rather like a malnourished Servant Mind with delusions of grandeur. Except that unlike Kantre (from the first game) it won't even have the ability to keep nearby doors locked.

I think you're probably right. I was however hoping Jeff would produce something a little more mobile (as opposed to being affixed to the floor as it appears to be) and, well, impressive. Still, having not met the creature in question yet, I can't jump to conclusions. It may have retractable tentacles that leap about and sting people, or the telepathic ability to make your head explode, or teleport itself at will to any destination it chooses while regurgitating killer death-beams from its empty and swollen eye-sockets...

Poll without a poll: survivors in Geneforge Series

I would really like the return of a human-usable Geneforge machine. In the first game I without hesistation tricked Trajkov and used the gloves myself. I really missed that extreme powerjolt in the second game.

"I's got to have me mandies, boyos!" <hands shaking with magical augmentaiton-goo withdrawl as he types>

EDIT: Ever since seeing that Monty Python episode with Chris Quid and his pet tiger who's fixing, I've assumed that the slang term "mandies" referred to any kind of drug. I just now finally got around to looking it up on the internet, and learned that it refers to a specific depressive drug called Methaqualone that decreases anxiety and tension, which is wholly out of keeping with my intended meaning. So those of you more knowledgeable of such things can freely substitute the current slang word (preferably British) denoting any drug that gives you extreme stimulation, an accellerated conscious state, and a feeling of great strength and limitless power and you'll have my intended expression in a nutshell. Except that with the Sucia Island technology it's all not just an illusion, so perhaps the phrase "I's got to have me Geneforges" would do just as well, or even better.

I'm really enjoying reading this discussion. Internal logic in fiction, and the reasons for it from the author's perspective and determined to a great extent by the limitations of the medium the story is presented in, has alwasy intrigued me.

I can't add much to it myself, though, because all the most perceptive points have already been mentioned.

Granted, it's only been a day since this forum was launched, but my itchy pants continue to get itchier.

When do people think the game will be released? Consider this another poll without the polling apparatus.

1. In a few hours
2. Tomorrow
3. Friday
4. Saturday
5. Next week
6. False alarm — the game won't actually be out until Labor Day
7. It's all a hideous practical joke. There is no Geneforge 3.

I personally cast my vote for Friday.
