I don't hate them and I have no reason to hate them. I'm only saying that the most important reason for text speak to exist, is because people are generally too lazy to start typing the words full-out. It isn't really something that stays with texting, mind you. The same spelling is used in IM and the like. I used to sue it a lot, until I came to recognize that I was in the process of forgetting the Dutch spelling.

If only I had your home address, I'd send you a letter. After I'd written it, obviously. Stupendously solemn remark, Alorael.

edit: Considering how I've used irony in my past comments I like to stress that I mean this.

edit2 (or pps): I like texting people when I'm not in the mood of talking to them, or anybody. This happens quite frequently which is why I like 'simsing' very much. It's less, or even non-committal.

Texting has a ton of practical applications:

• No time for a full conversation/just want to send a quick message
• The person you want to communicate with would be in trouble if their phone rang
• You or the person CAN'T talk right now
• Leaving a quick message for someone - "come over when you get this" or "lunch at 12:30?"
• "I miss you"
• Sending a mass message to friends "meet me for dinner at 7!"

etc.

Main way I use it is to communicate with my wife while away from home because we only have the one cell phone between us and no landlines. Or in other words when I'm out the only way I can communicate to her is sending a SMS to her instant messenger profile. I prefer people using text while they are at a movie for instance as well.

In other things I find the keypads laboriously slow to use for such things and would probably only text a lot of I had a phone with a qwerty keypad on it. I am also sensitive to the fact that people text when they shouldn't. I don't own a car and I pay a lot of attention to if drivers make eye contact with me (as a cyclist) because if they don't chances are they won't see me until its too late. And it's not common for me to stop my bike even when by traffic laws I shouldn't have to because somebody was turning out into an intersection with their eyes on a cell phone.

It's not necessarily laziness: there's a fairly strict upper limit on the length of text messages, so you sometimes have to abbreviate to make a message fit.

Thanks, I rarely use phones. I usually just talk to people in person.

You can really take time thinking out your message in texting..meaning you can make out more plausible excuses..

I would like to second this. And then third it.

The whole space thing doesn't really make much difference to me, though. I always write out my words fully, instead of abbreviating, even if it means the message spans onto two pages (which it never does anyway).

That's the spirit! It's probably cheaper in the long run, too.

Ugh, I hate abbreviated speech online, it starts converting to real life, a lot of girls at my school say "OMG!!!" Thankfully, lol doesn't roll of the tongue like it does on the keyboard.

While there are a few people who use texting reasonably, there are too many: "HAHA LOLERCAKZ I ttly pwnerd u n00b!" No, seriously, has anyone not gotten those?

EDIT: Got rid of curses, sorry Salmon.

Have you no common sense? This is a company website. This is family friendly. Swearing, even disguised, is not allowed.

Edit - I'm obviously fail at the keyboard tonight.

No idiot would text that kind of stuff on a cell phone. Must be RunEscape chatting or whatever.

Texting isn't destroying English; it is making it much more efficient. I don't think this should be equated with laziness.

For instance,
I have to go => gtg

The new phrasing is only 25% of the length of the original phrase. Better yet, the meaning of the phrase is still understood. If anything it is a more advanced means of communication...

I can actually write 1337 Speak, which is a laungage in itself. I am also learning Drow, Elvish and Novah (sp?). I was thinking of Klingon afterwards, but I might switch to french if I want to seriously swear at someone in a more recognized laungage.

I prefer receiving a text to receiving a voice message. From a time standpoint, it's far quicker to read a quick message that I can also easily refer back to than it is to call voice mail (which uses minutes), enter my password, and then listen to what sometimes can be rambling messages. Sending messages to, say, my wife when I have to tell her something that doesn't need a reply also saves both of us time.

No, you don't.

Also, leet isn't another language; it's merely an alternate, idiotic alphabet for English.
