All right, somehow the one thing I tried time and again decided to work this time. Looks like things are somewhat back to normal for now. Let me know if problems persist. -------------------- Your flower power is no match for my glower power! Posts: 3726 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

I saw the post above in the active topics list, and immediately thought it was the death of General that was being applauded. -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central "Slartucker is going to have a cow when he hears about this," Synergy said. So did the boards eat the "Omaha Mall Shooting" topic, or was it *i/Drakey/Saunders? 'cause I thought we were really starting to get somewhere there. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

My actions led to the destruction of the topic. However, otherwise General would be defunct. :( -------------------- Your flower power is no match for my glower power! Posts: 3726 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Why am I not surprised that clicking "Post Reply" gave me a 500 error? Oh, and sometimes when I go the these forums, the AOL search thingy comes up saying that the URL doesn't exist or something. -------------------- I can transform into almost anything, but not sanity -Iffy Muffins n' Hell|Muffins n' Hell: The Muffins Are Back Again I like this image Not in your shed -We are sort of done. quote:Ironically, Kel warned me yesterday that I should archive it quickly because the board would eat it. I had archived it already, but it's still pretty uncanny. I was going to start a 500 posts/20 pages rule, but evidently this is too much because the topic got it before reaching that. From now on, I will lock any General topic that reaches 400 posts and either re-start or ask the participants to re-start as needed. Clearly, the ancient board cannot operate with threads that long. Iffy brings up a good point. Lately I have been having trouble with the boards, saying that there is an internal server error which prevents me from getting on. Has that been resolved? -------------------- Hmm... Ornks, gazers and guacamole. What kind of food would you get? =:T:= Posts: 454 | Registered: Monday, August 20 2007 07:00 |

Given that I was hitting so many errors I was unable to post about an hour ago, I'd say no. Originally by Arancaytar: quote:Dikiyoba was under the impression that the length of posts mattered more than the number of posts. So perhaps locking threads of mostly long posts (like debate threads and RPs) at 400 posts but letting threads of mostly short posts (like the What have you been reading lately? thread) go until 600 or 750 posts would work too. Whatever is easier for you. -------------------- Episode 4: Spiderweb Reloaded Posts: 4346 | Registered: Friday, December 23 2005 08:00 |

I'm not making a modbot to use lock topics automatically. It's far too easy to screw up. :P This is all going to be enforced manually, so I'll definitely do it flexibly. The content-light topics should go at 600-700, the debates around 400, the roleplays maybe even at 300. -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. I for one don't really mind the Omaha thread biting the dust. And I support Aran's auto-lock policy... unstable boards = :( As for Who Killed General... I feel that answer is more subjective, and that the blame lies not on one person, but many people. -------------------- TM: "I want BoA to grow. Evolve where the food ladder has rungs to be reached." There are too many threads and posts in total on these boards, which is probably a reason for the 500 Errors. What I think should be done is all the other boards cleaned of really old threads. And the Richard White board as well as the Subterra boards deleted. Edit -Exile has minor 500 error. I'm still getting some 500 errors, but it's not as bad as it was yesterday or this morning. So Aran, is it the case that a thread vanishes from view on PPP while it's being updated? Omaha Mall Shooting definitely wasn't there last night, and it's definitely there now. And clearly Misc killed General. In the hall. With the revolver. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! I was about to say no, but then I realized that it's very likely it does exactly that. The updated thread should never vanish for more than 1-2 minutes, but it is possible that it does not get displayed between the time it is marked as requiring an update, and the time it is updated. I've never seen this happen, but the situation doesn't arise that often. -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. Also, may I ask if UBB is so unstable Why the hell stay on it?? There are many much, MUCH more reliable free forum hostings out there, why don't we use any of them? -------------------- The one and only. Posts: 942 | Registered: Sunday, October 8 2006 07:00 |

Time and convenience. These boards exist as a means for the fans of Spiderweb Software to communicate; they are not, however, the primary purpose of the company; releasing software is and these boards exist primarily for the game forums. At the time UBB was one of the better ones out there and far superior to the old Ikonboards. While yes, Jeff and Mariann could make a different set of forums, this is a time sink. Realistically, what does that gain them? Not a whole lot. The forums work 99% of the time and serve their intended purpose. The time investment to set up a new, more stable message board is not justified. -------------------- Your flower power is no match for my glower power!
