Thired?

It really depends upon the book and movie. You can't generalize.

1. I like reading novels. (Mostly fantasy, mystery, sci-fi). Unfortunately, I don't have as much time to read as I would like. And it's been a very long time since I've read one I really, really liked.

2. Isn't there some saying about mediocre books making good movies and good books making mediocre movies? I'm going to assume that's generally true, because I tend not to watch movies very often.

3. Why?

Dikiyoba.

The part of me that read new books all the time in elementary school is gone. Seriously, I can't remember what it was like. Now I force myself to read new stuff...reading's unnatural!

I like reading, but don't get around to it as often as I would like now that summer's over. :(

The movie isn't always better than the book; sometimes, it's the reverse. Who even remembers that Jurassic Park was originally a book? (2001: A Space Odyssey is another example, but it was written specifically with the intent of making it into a movie, so it doesn't really count.)

I've only read 2001, not seen the movie. I've read the sequels, too.

—Alorael, who can see where the great and mediocre argument comes from. The two media are different enough that what makes for a good movie makes for a poor book and vice versa, but it's possible to put a story that would work well in one genre in the wrong one first. And there are movie adaptations that deviate far enough from the source book to be good, too. (There may be good book adaptations, but I've never heard of one.)

In many cases books are better than movies becouse movies cannot be very long so they don't cover many details and books do so.

Good lord the movie is boring... it's pretty, certainly, but it's so boring. Like ten minutes of dialog in a 2.5 hour movie. BAD.

But the books are good, you say?

The movie based on Eragon is really bad compared to the book.

So you're saying that all books are better then the movies they're based on because of one example. That's definitely not generalizing.

...I would certainly hope the book is better. That was a terrible movie, even without the blatant simultaneous ripoff of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. Lame dialogue, more lame story, really lame cliffhanger, and what's that? Oh, the dragon's been hiding behind that curtain silently for the entire movie? Okay!

(catches breath)

But yeah, while some book-movies are cool, it's generally more fun to just read it and use your imagination. Not being sarcastic here, either.

I never said that. Is it really so wrong to say what I did in my last post? You are confusing me.

You should always read the book before seeing the movie, or you'll be seeing everything in the book the way it happened in the movie, stiffling the imagination.

I haven't seen the movie, but the book is terrible too. There are very few books I put down and never finish, but Eragon is one of them. It sounds like the movie is, if nothing else, faithful.

—Alorael, who wouldn't put 2001, 2010, 2051, or 3001 on his list of favorite books. They're worth reading, though, even though they aren't really page-turners.

2001 the book at least had an understandable ending compared to the movie that was all about special effects and trying to be clever.

It depends upon the specific case. The Maltese Falcon as a book was mostly describing the case as Sam Spade goes through the city outdoors. The movie version takes place almost entirely indoors in a few rooms. They are both great, but different interpretations of the plot to fit the media.

LOTR was cut down to fit a movie in a reasonable length of time. It couldn't have every scene from the book.

In that case, you probably wouldn't have the patience to read the sequel, Eldest. Now that is a great book. Much more originality (well, originality period), more than one plot (three or four subplots), character development of more than just Eragon, etc.

Eragon was written by a 15-year-old kid. You have to give him a little grace, at least.
