I was just thinking, would you find it more preferable to routinely lay eggs like a chicken instead of menstruating once a month? Thanks in advance for your input! -------------------- "Names is for tombstones, baby." -Mr. Big Posts: 699 | Registered: Thursday, September 20 2001 07:00 |

Most of us aren't women. It is still a legitimate question, though. From a practical point of view, eggs-laying reduces the chances of serious injury to the mother, so I'm for it. -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. Although I'm not the target of the question, in my total ignorance of virtually all biology, I can't say that I even know what the advantages or disadvantages would be. The relevant Wikipedia page (UBB apparently won't let me link directly to it?) doesn't seem to have anything on pros and cons, either, although it has reference to a particularly odd behavior in some animals. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. So instead of menstruating once a month, you lay an egg once a month? Unless you're proposing that egg-babies should be less developed than birth-babies, the egg would be around the size of a birth-baby. So instead of giving birth no more than once every nine months, you effectively give birth every month. Besides, it would be a blow to feminism. Women should be barefoot and nesting in the kitchen, and all that jazz. -------------------- FORTRAN was the language of choice for the same reason that three-legged races are popular. - Ken Thompson Posts: 1509 | Registered: Tuesday, January 10 2006 08:00 |

Man, wouldn't that be the coolest thing ever. Having a hard spheroid the size of your head shooting from your rump every revolution of the moon with the joyous anticipation of it making a great mess later on, knowing full well that you have a human embryo sitting on the couch that has its own apartment already, sounds a few fries short of a happy meal. I'll do it for five bucks. Well, the human placenta is a delicacy in some cultures, so I imagine that a human egg, which would be far more appetizing than the mass of gore that is a placenta, would be a much more popular food item. As a male, I can say I would rather female not lay eggs. If they were indeed doing the equivalent of giving birth once a month, that would lead to some seriously worn out... goods. Nobody wants that. -------------------- You lose. Posts: 2156 | Registered: Thursday, August 24 2006 07:00 |

By Scorp: quote:Oddly enough, this is less off the wall. Lots of people eat placenta, so it's not that far-fetched. Still... no. Just... no. So what's the next question? "Should we let the first child hatched push the other eggs out of the nest?" EDIT: ET beat me to it. -------------------- God is Real, unless declared Integer. Would I enjoy laying an egg every month? Well, we sort of already do but that's besides the point. What sort of nonsense is this? I mean, I don't even know where to begin. Laying a baby-sized egg once a month would ****ing suck. The way it is now is irritating, buy preferable to a hard shelled alternative. Out of curiosity, what possessed you to ask this here Scorpius? I do want to slap you. -------------------- You acquire an item: Radio Free Foil Posts: 1169 | Registered: Monday, September 23 2002 07:00 |

Technology gives us all kinds of advantages. This is a bit stranger than normal Scorpius... if "normal" and "scorpius" can even co-exist in the same thought. Quick question: why do we seem to be assuming that humans would lay hard-shelled bird-like eggs when echidnas and the platypus lay soft, leathery eggs? In my mind the whole point is that the egg is significantly smaller than a baby. The obvious problem of the human babies being the size of chicks when they hatch is counteracted by the increased number of babies that could be produced by a single female. Such is nature's pattern, and there is no reason why it could not work equally well for people. I thought I'd never use the words human, baby, and hatch in the same sentence, but there you go. -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. quote:Some assembly required. Each set sold separately. Batteries not included. Seriously though… I wouldn't want to have to face my mother, sister, girlfriend, or any other females when that once a month comes around. As Andraste said, it's apparently pretty unpleasant for them as it is. What Scorpius is suggesting would be just… well, much worse for everybody. -------------------- Do not provoke the turtles.
