quote:Yeah, Josh Kennedy. The point is, Australia deserved to lose because they were playing for extra time. Why else would Hiddink hold his subs? And Salmon, France didn't have a PK, Spain did. The France-Spain game looked close to me up until Zidane put it away with the late third goal. The Spaniards seemed to have slightly more of the possession time, and had about as many shots. The French looked maybe somehow faster; they had a few players who seemed to be able to dash along with the ball amazingly quickly, whereas the Spanish were more apt to make long passes. I'm not enough of a football expert to tell how important this observation is, or even whether it was really true. Just my uninformed impression, sitting under a medium-sized TV screen in a hotel bar in a remote village in the Pyrenees (where I am working hard for Science, yeah) and deciding to cheer for Spain because I was in Spain. To me it looked as though it could easily have gone the other way. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

Spain had a lot more of the possession - I believe it ended up something like 62-38 percent in favor of Spain. Still, they couldn't break down the French defense, which is still world class, despite being older and slower than before. France's left side looks incredibly suspect - Malouda and Abidal are there for the taking. Will Kaka and Cafu abuse it? There's no doubt in my mind that they will. -------------------- "At times discretion should be thrown aside, and with the foolish we should play the fool." - Menander ==== Drakefyre's Demesne - Happy Happy Joy Joy Encyclopedia Ermariana - Trapped in the Closet ==== You can take my Mac when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse! That was close - Germany levelled the score (1:1) in the 80th minute (this is actually the first game I'm watching). Currently waiting for the extension to start... Second extension starts in a few minutes, still 1:1. Pure awesomeness. Decided literally in the last instant. OMG WE WON YAY Er. They. I didn't play. :P [ Friday, June 30, 2006 08:48: Message edited by: Drow ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Thrilling. If it wasn't for that collision it might be a different story (I feel for Argentina, backup, inexperienced, trying to protect a lead and all). On march the Teutonic Knights. :) Now if only Ukraine can pull the big upset  -------------------- "Dikiyoba ... is demon ... drives people mad and ... do all sorts of strange things." There is no World Cup. Germany played well and certainly had a good goal to tie it. I missed the OT and PK, but was told that Argentina missed 2 kicks. How???? Italy won, 3-0, according to the radio. That means that Italy and Germany will play on July 4th. ps. I like your enthusiasm Aran. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Lehmann saved penalty kicks from Ayala and Cambiasso. He dove in the right direction on all four kicks, and he was poaching to the left a little to unsettle the kickers. So two of them went to his left and he saved them both. After seeing Ricardo (Portugal) block PKs to win the game v England, I can see how Argentina lost. Superior goalkeepers will beat goal makers. Both sides, Portugal and England missed kicks or had them blocked. It was a good game, especially considering England played short for half the time. Edit - After seeing the clips from the England game, and Rooney kicking his opponent in the crotch, I can say he deserved the red and should get worse. He is a thug. I saw the last part of the England-Portugal game, from the last ten minutes or so of regular time on. After a while I started counting players, because it sure looked as though the English just never had enough players around the ball. Were they really that disorganized? Yeah, sure enough: they played with 10 against 11 for nearly an hour in a World Cup quarter-final, and held out until penalty kicks. On the whole, it doesn't seem like evidence that Portugal is a major threat for the Finale. Its remarkable what a difference that one missing player seems to make at this level. It's only 1 out of 10 out on the field, but with such a big field, that means there's always one zone where you're playing 3 against 4 or worse, and that's really tough. -------------------- We're not doing cool. After the upsets, my revised tips: Germany v Italy (4 July (21:00) - Dortmund): Germany will we too strong for the Italian team. Portugal v France (5 July (21:00) - Munich): France will overpower Portugal. They will carry their momentum from defeating Brazil into this match. -------------------- I'll put a Spring in your step. Posts: 2396 | Registered: Saturday, January 29 2005 08:00 |

Trinity, don't forget that Portugal was missing two center midfielders, their playmaker Deco and their enforcer Costinha. Tiago and Petit won't be in the side against France, and good thing too. Rooney deserves to be dropped from the England side until he learns to control himself. My tip is for France to win it - they have the drive and the capability... And Zidane will settle for nothing less. -------------------- And when you want to Live How do you start? Where do you go? Who do you need to know? *Name by Slarty, so blame him if it's filthy... Germany will have to go through Italy and France or Portugal to win. I guess if they beat Italy, they have a good chance. But didn't they lose a game with the same teams less than a year ago? I don't follow these events in detail, but that's what I heard. In any case, of the three matches still to come, my tip is that no less than two will be decided in a penalty shootout. The teams are amazingly matched in strength... Oh, and as for more conventional tips: Germany - Italy (possibly clouded judgement though.) France - Portugal (they beat —ing Brazil.) Germany has momentum, as does France. Italy has overcome adversity and Portugal survived despite missing some of their best talent. Should be an interesting day. Looking for Germany and Portugal - France played a lacklustre Brazilian side and hasn't shown me enough offensive snap. -------------------- "Dikiyoba ... is demon ... drives people mad and ... do all sorts of strange things." Two. In the last two minutes. That was harsh... Lahm was practically everywhere at once. Klose looked to be half asleep. Lehmann has this interesting habit of plucking corner balls straight from the air - apparently, he's bought into the idea that you don't need to be anywhere near the goal as long as you get the ball. quote:Lahm is very good. Cannavaro shut down Klose (Podolski had better luck against Materazzi). Catching corners (and all crosses) is a good way to not get beaten on headers. I picked Italy to win, but I was having my doubts after regulation. But what a way to win in extra time!
