And then there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth.

I hope Italy and France both lose at this point forward. I will no longer cheer for , only against.

France is the winner.

For the second time, I was wrong. I'm a reverse-prophet.

That would be unprecedented in World Cup Finals.

Not a great game today, Zidane played without the pizazz I've come to expect.

Zidane played well enough. Acting by Henry for the penalty, and then a dire rest of the game. Portugal deserved at least one goal.

Oh well, Italia Italia!

Two games left.

France vs Italy
Portugal vs Germany

Germany basically sucked in the last game, and the last-minute double garrotting must have shot morale through the floor. Also, they looked exhausted. I don't expect them to catch themselves in time to secure third place.

As for the rest, I reiterate my earlier point. France beat Brazil.

(Of course, it might just be some subconscious desire to see Italy get comeuppance from France, but hey. :P )

That would be unprecedented in World Cup Finals.

Originally written before France-Portugal semi. After the semi I was glad to see portugal lose, they didn't play like they deserved to go on - no offensive snap whatever.

Going to pull for France and Zidane, he's playing at a level beyond his age and is really pulling France along - a great leader.

Germany-Portugal: Portugal cannot create any offence so likely won't win. That being said, one will likely see a lot of the second stringers playing and this may result in making the match tough to call - but I think even then Germany has better depth. And those fresh legs will deal with the fatigue problem that crept into their semi.

France v Italy (9 July (20:00) - Berlin): Hopefully, France will defeat Italy. After all, that could have been Australia in the final.

Right, if you hadn't finished behind Ghana and Ecuador. :)

We everyone don't trust Italy? Maybe the Italy's ability is only to arrive at the final match, then lose with a stupid error... But France, remember: we waited a lot for this time... Time of revenge...

Hey, new title. Wow.

It's the 76th minute, and Portugal is apparently having its backside handed to it (2:0).

It would seem that the most reliable way for me to support a team is to bet against it. :P

Edit: 3:1

Portugal's one goal was very impressive, and they did make some shots, but Germany made a lot more throughout. This was not one of those could-have-gone-either-way games.

Schweinsteiger scored all three goals; the second happened to bounce off a Portugese player on the way in. I don't imagine hat tricks are frequent in World Cup football.

1-1.

Whoa. I was a bit worried after Zidane's goal, but Materazzi make his "revenge".

Very exciting match, though. I never seen so much attacks by both teams. Maybe I'll have to watch football more.

Italy full of actors. Then again, so are France.

Now onto the last half.

Second half over and still tied: France had a lot more attacks, but couldn't get through.

France did seem to play better than Italy, at least to me. But the Italians hung on until their opponents made mistakes. And what a mistake: this just leaves a bad taste in one's mouth about the whole thing.

Zinedine Zidane, perhaps minutes away from leading France to the world championship in the last game of his long and illustrious career, gratuitously and blatantly head-butts an opponent in the chest. It was not a collision; it was a deliberate attack, from a standing confrontation. The only discernible provocation was that the Italian player had just held Zidane back with his arm, itself probably a minor foul; but the ball wasn't close or coming close, and the play wouldn't have been important. Zidane just snapped, inexplicably. Red card, he's gone, France is down a man for the last few minutes of the second overtime period, and is missing him for the penalty shoot-out. So stupid it reaches tragedy.

I think that there is more. In the replay I saw that Zidane and (don't remember who) talked a bit after the Italian held Zidane's arm. Maybe a big insult? Only Zidane know...

Not really. But I am sure about a thing. Italy won't win. :o

It's a shame you didn't edit this post before I found it. Congrats to your team, they played decent ball.

Edit - Fingers are still tying up fishing lures instead of pounding the keyboard...

Dammit. I got tired at the end of regulation play (6am) and went to bed.

Naturally, I missed the good parts.
