Oops I must have screwed it up, by Broadband I meant cable. Is there some way to fix that?

Just edit your first post and mention that Broadband is meant to mean cable. People should understand. Anyone with DSL will go for DSL anyway though, so.

At my parents', we share one DSL access in our subnet; in my college dorm, we're all connected to the university backbone (T1 access, about 2-4 mbps)

I have DSL now, and was so happy to throw away the Dial-up modem.

Now that summer is here and I no longer have access to campus high-speed, I am confined by 56K. My parents say I can get high-speed if I pay for it. Apparently, they need another look at tuition costs.

When I'm at home, I use my neighbor's wireless connection. At school I have a high speed connection through the resnet server. I'm not sure how this is classified.

Broadband, more than likely.

I have DSL at home (one of the benefits of having two people in a household who work with remote FTP servers).
At school, I use the campus broadband connection which, though claiming to have higher speeds, gives me a ping akin to a 56k connection.

Does your neighbor realize you're using his wireless? :)

Sigh
The days...

I used to use my neighbor's wireless connection until he figured out how to block me, since then I got cable, while in school I use the wireless connection which seems to work fairly well.

I sometimes switch to my neighbors' network(s) when my DSL goes down. Networks two houses away are often more reliable than mine.

Not sure. To be honest, I don't even know which neighbor's it is. Until someone complains, about it, I'm assuming they are cool with it. That being said, I'm only home for a few weeks here and there, so it's not like I'm using it constantly.

My reasoning is that anyone foolish enough to have a wireless internet connection without a firewall and proper security is asking for it. He should be happy you don't trash his computer while you're at it.

I thought "broadband" just referred to a connection with multiple channels -- basically anything faster than dial-up.

Good ol' dial up. Can't afford broadband. I love america though, everyone uses wireless and as mentioned before there are plenty of networks to hop onto for free.

I have dial-up at home, because fast connection at work is enough for most things I need. And I am sufficiently used to dial-up to not mind the long download times.

The responce time (which is what you get from ping) is unrelated to throughput. My connection at college also had throughput of several hundred kps, while having ping times worse than a dial-up.
