Ah, this has been a long time. So erhm... hi ^^ I didn't mean to leave :P .

Anyway i was wondering, seeing as i still have my exile trilogy and blades cd's tucked safely away(to scare my children one day :P ), if you friendly lot could give me some recomendations as to where I should start playing again from (all these new titles confuse me endlessly).

You see I still have this really really slow laptop :P and aside from doing work things, it really can't handle anything else.

I'd love to have that feeling again that I had while playing exile when taking classes ^^(forgot to turn the sound off once xD) and seeing as i often have to take the train for several hours I decide to seek out this site again ^^, and hope for some kind and benevolent guru to guide me as to wich game I should try and play first ^^. Only things i played before we're exile I-III and blades of exile. I also had a brief encounter with the first avernum but I forgot where I put that :P

Welcome back.

The Avernum series is supposedly good - up until Avernum 4. I have not played the series, so don't take my word for it. :P Avernum is a revmamped Exile, so it might not be the best choice if you are looking for something new.

Nethergate would require more thinking, and Geneforge is a classic Hack 'n' Slash.

People who have actually played all the games could tell you more. :P

Play Nethergate. Or Avernum 2 (although the Avernums are just Exile remakes). Or, if you want a huge variation play the new BoE scenarios and that will keep you busy for a long time. For the love of God don't even tread NEAR Homeland. And I'd advise against A4 as well, but there are a few people that like it so it must appeal to some.

I'd recommend Exile 3 and see what you think. If you like that, start at 1 and progress. If you don't like one, just play 3 or BoX or Avernum.

He's already played through the Exiles, Ben. He's looking for more suggestions.

I'd agree with Nethergate. It's a very, very good game. If you like the engine and wouldn't mind replaying Exile plots, download the Avernums.

The Geneforge games are different, but it's worth downloading one or two demos and giving them a try as well.

—Alorael, who wouldn't worry about having an old, slow laptop. Nothing but A4 will put any stress on your computer.

:) Welcome back, Soulravage! Or is it Tim?
Amazing how many 3 digits-oldbies are raising now from the past: Croikle, Boeing, Slarty ... and now you ^_^

You should definitely play the Avernum series. And Blades of Avernum what is the most promising game and my favourite (well, A3 was also a favourite because of Hawke's Mansion).
I think you get a discount on BoA or Nethergate when you buy any game. Giving also Nethergate a trial won't hurt. It will be updated soon, Jeff says.

I would recommend Nethergate, and second to that Geneforge 1.

BoA would be good as well, and A2 is very good if you don’t mind the replay.

Welcome back, Vaevictis. Honestly, the Exiles probably will work the best on slooooow computers, although if you want to replay them you might as well try to do it in Avernum.

Avernum 1 has an extra multilevel dungeon in the Giant Lands that wasn't in Exile 1. Avernum 2 doesn't let you rack up money beating up the Empire guards at checkpoints like in Exile.

Otherwise your best bet are the scenarios for Blades of Exile and Avernum where if you don't like one there are many others.

Unless it's rediculously slow, you shouldn't have any issues with the Nethergate/Avernum engine. I first played Nethergate on an old PC with a 200 MHz Pentium and 16 MB of RAM, and it ran just fine, and Avernum uses the same engine.

Heh, I used to run it on an old 133mhz and had no problems. That was one of the main reasons I got into these games. But now I have a beast and still play them. I guess I just got hooked.

Nope fraid I don't speak italian, just liked the quote. Means "Deep vengeance is the daughter of deep silence."

Hmm I guess i should give the avernum series a go then, did have one more question thou, how good is blades of avernum <=> blades of exile concerning the number of good scenarios.
Cause i might be tempted to buy blades too, but only if there are some good scenarios out there.

Anyway glad to see my favourite skribbane sniper is still around ^^ *wave, do you still have the most insane postcount Alorael?

Blades of Exile has many, many more scenarios at the moment, but Blades of Avernum has a few good scenarios already.

Playin any of the Exile series may dull or heighten your concept of Avernum, depends on your behalf, as they are both almost the same thing, except for Avernums superior graphics and it's minor modifications.

I wouldn't say that it was the Avernum's "Superior graphics" that make me play Avernum. I honestly prefer E3 and BoE's. But I play Avernums etc now, because they run best on the computers, and I've never been able to "grasp" Exile 1. I guess I'm too young for that, and need a little bit of high-tech :P . Exile 2 I played, but then it stopped working a long time ago, so I just played the Avernums bottom-up. Nethergate's also a great game, though I've never registered it. Honestly I'd wait for the updated version before checking it out, but yes, it's a good game.

I think the best game out by general consensus is Avernum 2, which has the best storyline, and doesn't feel ridiculously repeated hack'n'slash.

The Geneforges were good in the beginning (GF1), but have gradualy gotten worse from there. However, I think we all, me at least, have great hopes for GF4. You may want to check out Geneforge 1, and play it, but you might not want to play the other two, as they're just repeats of each-other.

I don't know about the RW games, but I must say that Homeland is classified as a computer virus, so don't download it. It not only damages your PC but also gives you significant mental problems.

Uh-oh. Does that mean that The Lurker is actually a virus as well? Or are the resulting mental problems just that severe?

The only problem with RW games is that they give you implants. Or at least activate them.

I'd have to second several of the Board suggestions. Avernum 2 has the best plot of the Avernum series. Geneforge 1 has the best plot of the Geneforge series. Nethergate probably has the best plot of all the Spiderweb games.

And, as Alo pointed out, you should download the demos and take them for a metaphorical test drive. Opinions vary of the relative worth of the games. It seems that the average SW forum member is more fond of plot and story than hack and slash, so take that into consideration when reviewing our advice.

Since you enjoyed the Exile series, and own Blades of Exile, I would encourage you to try to some of the scenarios. I have heard that many are incredible. (I personally never got into the BoE engine, so I cannot recommend any specific scenarios but TM and Ash certainly can)

Blades of Avernum has far fewer scenarios, and I understand that, in general, they fare poorly in terms of quality compared to Blades of Exile. However, take my words with a salt shaker close at hand since I never got into Blades of Avernum either.

If you're looking to join a cult, I'd recommend the Cult of Richard White. Take a look at the Cult history posted in the RWG forums if you're curious. (And yes, Diki, everyone has implants, but they're only activitated when the ever-living-ever-dead-one needs you)

In my opinion, I didn't quite loke arernum due to the birdseye-like view. I prefer the exiles much better (especially blades of exile)... but geneforge is quite good.

Wait... Exile has a bird's-eye view. Avernum had a 45º angle view.

And Geneforge has the same kind of view that you're complaining about seeing in Avernum. I'm confused...

1) Homeland is not a virus and doesn't cause any damage to your computer.
2) Give it a try; who knows, you might like it.
3) Kingy - there are indeed people who like Avernum 4 (like me). Just in case you didn't know, there are also quite a few people who like Homeland - but most of them used to post at the Dragonlore boards (now dead) instead of the Spiderweb boards, so may not have heard of them.
4) Dikiyoba - nah, I'm not a virus. Or, if I am, it doesn't have anything to do with Homeland. :P

Well I think ill just stick to my boe and exile's then and perhaps try the avernum 4 demo.
First thou I would like to play some scenarios again on my blades^^. But here's the problem i seem to have lost most ;s. If someone could perhaps point me into the direction for a few things:

- the lyceum(does that still exist?)
-*whistles*)
-and perhaps some links too the classics like the ones made by Alcritas, or the quitesencial quintessence(spelling) and some off those nifty movie scenarios.
-or perhaps some of the newer ones that I have missed.

If you could help me out id be very gratefull ^^

The Lyceum is in my sig. Kelandon's page ( http://home.sanbrunocable.com/~tommywatts03/ ) contains The Archive, which contains all known BoE scenarios. It's not searchable though, and has no reviews, so if you want reviews of stuff, Alexandria ( http://www.personal.psu.edu/bxb11/boe/alexandriajs/index.htm ) is still up. It doesn't have all known scenarios, as far as I know, but it's searchable by various categories, so it's still useful.

No, you can't talk about that thing you mentioned here. Try at The Lyceum. I don't know if anyone is willing to give it to others though.

EDIT: Hey, look! Alexandria's in my sig as well. I completely forgot.
