Dialoge script error. in Blades of Avernum Editor

Several problems with the dialogue script.

1. The code line goes on an individual line. For example, instead of:
begintalknode 6;
state = 3;
nextstate = -1;
question = "So what do we have to do?";
text1 = "_Go to a cave that is west from here. In there you will find two portals. Take the left one. The other leads to Hell._";
text2 = "_After that, get through the maze and take the items there. Then come back. I hope you succede. I really need help. And those items will be neccisary_"; code = toggle_quest(0,1); break;
It should instead read like this:
begintalknode 6;
state = 3;
nextstate = -1;
question = "So what do we have to do?";
text1 = "_Go to a cave that is west from here. In there you will find two portals. Take the left one. The other leads to Hell._";
text2 = "_After that, get through the maze and take the items there. Then come back. I hope you succede. I really need help. And those items will be neccisary_";
code = toggle_quest(0,1); // << SEE THE DIFFERENCE? <<
break;
2. If you want to display a node only if a certain condition is met, you use the condition field instead of an if operator. You also don't use brackets with it.

So this:
begintalknode 7;
state = 1;
nextstate = 4;
if (get_flag(0,23) == 1) { question = "Hey, we got the items you wanted!";
text1 = "_Great. And you should thank me for the portal. You are probably wondering what those are exactly._");
text2 = "_They are called the 'Bow of God' and 'Arrow of Heaven'. They are called this because they are special._";
text3 = "_The 'Bow of God' is the only bow that can shoot the 'Arrow of Heaven'. Both of them only appear if there is some crazy non-stop demon someplace. And they appear in a secret location, only told to someone in a dream._";
set_flag(0,23,1);
}
should look like this:
begintalknode 7;
state = 1;
nextstate = 4;
condition = (get_flag(0,23) == 1); // << SEE THE DIFFERENCE? <<
question = "Hey, we got the items you wanted!";
text1 = "_Great. And you should thank me for the portal. You are probably wondering what those are exactly._"); // << YOU HAVE A SUPERFLUOUS PARENTHESIS HERE; REMOVE IT <<
text2 = "_They are called the 'Bow of God' and 'Arrow of Heaven'. They are called this because they are special._";
text3 = "_The 'Bow of God' is the only bow that can shoot the 'Arrow of Heaven'. Both of them only appear if there is some crazy non-stop demon someplace. And they appear in a secret location, only told to someone in a dream._";
set_flag(0,23,1); // << THIS IS ALSO WRONG; SEE #3 <<
3. All non-dialogue code done in dialogue nodes must be done using a code field, like the one that toggles the quest in node 6. I suspect that you may have been trying to use a dialogue action here, which takes place in the action field. So instead of this:
begintalknode 7;
state = 1;
nextstate = 4;
condition = (get_flag(0,23) == 1);
question = "Hey, we got the items you wanted!";
text1 = "_Great. And you should thank me for the portal. You are probably wondering what those are exactly._";
text2 = "_They are called the 'Bow of God' and 'Arrow of Heaven'. They are called this because they are special._";
text3 = "_The 'Bow of God' is the only bow that can shoot the 'Arrow of Heaven'. Both of them only appear if there is some crazy non-stop demon someplace. And they appear in a secret location, only told to someone in a dream._";
set_flag(0,23,1);
It should look like either this:
begintalknode 7;
state = 1;
nextstate = 4;
condition = (get_flag(0,23) == 1);
question = "Hey, we got the items you wanted!";
text1 = "_Great. And you should thank me for the portal. You are probably wondering what those are exactly._";
text2 = "_They are called the 'Bow of God' and 'Arrow of Heaven'. They are called this because they are special._";
text3 = "_The 'Bow of God' is the only bow that can shoot the 'Arrow of Heaven'. Both of them only appear if there is some crazy non-stop demon someplace. And they appear in a secret location, only told to someone in a dream._";
code = set_flag(0,23,1); // << SEE THE DIFFERENCE? <<
break;
or this:
begintalknode 7;
state = 1;
nextstate = 4;
condition = (get_flag(0,23) == 1);
question = "Hey, we got the items you wanted!";
text1 = "_Great. And you should thank me for the portal. You are probably wondering what those are exactly._";
text2 = "_They are called the 'Bow of God' and 'Arrow of Heaven'. They are called this because they are special._";
text3 = "_The 'Bow of God' is the only bow that can shoot the 'Arrow of Heaven'. Both of them only appear if there is some crazy non-stop demon someplace. And they appear in a secret location, only told to someone in a dream._";
action = SET_SDF 0 23 1; // << SEE THE DIFFERENCE? <<
The latter of the two options is quicker and cleaner to use, but it really comes down to personal preference.

EDIT: Ephesos beat me to it.

Make the destination end of a newly created portal unstable. Unless someone finds some way to stabilize it, it'll just collapse again after a period of time elapses (which is shortened by every thing/being that comes through it).

I say kill it now and be done with it. That way, this RP reaches a proper close rather than just dying.

Dewiss might contact the Thieves Guild soon. But not for thieving.

That said, the IC I just posted is pretty long. I really wanted to get the ball rolling on my faction, rather than playing a static force. As such, my IC is a whopping 5.5 page lengths long. Yikes. So, just saying, you might want to pace yourselves.

Also, Tullegolar? It's Valorim, not Valorum. Also, Littleton is located just northeast of where the two branches of the mountain split. It's a mining town.

AMMEND: Nikki, do you mind if I take Sarrin? You seem to have released her from your faction, and I can picture a use for her.

"None of your lawsss?" The voice did not belong to Bekath, but to the Slith priest over in the corner. He angrily approached the missionary. "Doesss that include your sso-called solution?" He said, eyes alight with rage. He threw a piece of paper at the missionary's feet; the missionary recognized it as the pamphlet that had been distributed previously, outlining the Hunters' goals. "Do you honessstly think we're sssstupid enough to-"

"Dewiss..." Bekath said, trying to get the slith's attention.

"-fall for your ploy? We know you'll ssimply ssstab usss in the back-"

"Dewiss!" Bekath said in a louder tone. A note of warning had entered his voice as well.

"-first chance you get, ssso why would we knowingly walk right into a-"

"DEWISS! Stand down NOW!" Bekath's voice rung throughout the shrine. Dewiss gave him a sour look before retreating back to his corner, where he watched the missionary distastefully.

"I apologize for that, but Dewiss brings up an important point. Your whole ideology is about eliminating non-humans. So are the non-humans of Sanctuary exempt from your rules too? Or are any that come near your lands going to have unfortunate 'accidents'?"

TUNNEL UNDER THE MOUNTAIN

John squinted in the torchlight as tunnel widened out into a gallery. Suddenly, John threw his hand up, signaling the others to stop. At first, it appeared that John was merely being paranoid. Then a low, distant growl emanated from somewhere in the gallery. Shuffling could also be heard, faint, yet present. "Get weapons drawn and spread out," John whispered. "We don't want to pose too good a target."

The group spread out and advanced slowly. The noises grew louder. As torchlight spread through the gallery, a little bit of movement could be seen at the very edges of perception. A hiss near John caused him to whirl, blade bared openly. Something was coming towards him. He could hear scales against stone, slithering... a snake, perhaps?

A flash of movement came from the shadows at John's head. He swung his sword desperately, and miraculously connected with his attacker. The reptile's body fell heavily to the floor, dead. It was certainly a snake, but not like any he had seen before. Its scales were turquoise, with small stripes of green. A small amount of frost exuded from its maw, and a smell of decay reached John's nose. The body was deteriorating at a rapid rate, decomposing before his eyes. Soon, it was nothing but a small skeleton. But the scent had alerted the other beings in the cave to a possible meal, and footfalls could be heard at the east end of the gallery. "Band together!" John shouted. Growling and hissing reached his ears as more creatures charged towards him. The party regrouped, and the priests started to chant. Soon, a small cadre of giant lizards swarmed into view. John stabbed the first one, then slew the second one with a slash. A priest launched a bolt of holy energy at one lizard, causing it to keel over. Blasts of energy, the occasional gout of holy fire, and many swings of a blade later, the group dispatched the last of the lizards. Or so they thought, until they heard a rhythmic thud of another approaching creature. But this one sounded larger. It came partially into view, revealing itself as what appeared to be a golden giant lizard. Its scales were a dull yellow, and it walked with a patient gait. It seemed to think that it didn't need to move quickly to secure its prey. Then it moved into full light.

"Sweet Telkavoth!" A priest gasped. A nearby soldier whimpered, then passed out. The lizard had a horrific bulge around its neck the size of a small boulder. The scales on this bulge was cracked, and an orange substance oozed out of the cracks. The lizard opened its mouth to hiss, and the same orange substance dripped from its fangs. The back end of the lizard had shrunk down, with its back legs being only a quarter the size of the front legs. The tail had separated into what seemed to be strips of scales. And as the orange substance hit the ground, the stone hissed and melted away.

The monster roared, spraying the orange substance on one of the priests. He let out a scream of pain as the substance started eating away his flesh, and quickly started reciting a ritual to heal the injuries. John charged forward and slashed at the beast, but the blade bounced off the unusually tough scales. He then was thrown aside by the monster's leg, which smashed into his abdomen. Another priest chanted, and a bolt of energy flew at the beast. It rebounded off and grazed the priest who cast it, knocking him to the ground. A priestess sent a cloud of daggers at the beast, and finally managed to extract an injury from it as the daggers buried themselves in its side. The beast roared in pain, spraying more of the caustic orange substance. From the wounds, more of the orange substance came bleeding forth; the orange substance was in fact the creature's blood. John charged the creature and stabbed it as the priestess let loose a gout of intensely-hot flame. Both took tolls on the beast, which roared in agony. One of the soldiers charged it and jammed a spear right into the monster's neck, slicing through the bulge. The point punched through, and the bulge let loose with a sickening wave of caustic blood, flowing over the offending soldier who screamed in agony. The monster toppled over, dying, while the soldier flailed about and fell. A priest rushed over, trying to heal the wounds inflicted by the acidic blood, but it was no use. The soldier perished along with the horrific monstrosity.

AMINRO

A man was trying to teach a few of the soldiers in Aminro how to use a bow. A couple of the soldiers were doing fairly well, managing to actually hit the targets. The rest... well, the best they had going for them is that they hadn't managed to shoot themselves. Yet.

"I prefer crossbows myself," stated a rather tall, dark-haired priestess watching the archery attempts.

"Yes, my dear, but for now, we need to use bows." Iocabe said softly. "I'll see if I can get the fletcher to craft you one, though, along with a set of bolts."

"That'd be kind." The priestess said. Suddenly, she grabbed her stomach and grimaced.

"Stomach cramps again, Fae?" Iocabe asked, concerned.

"Yes, but I don't why..." She gasped. After a few seconds, the pain passed.

"Have you seen a healer?"

She nodded. "But they can't even seem to do anything for the pain. No matter what they do, nothing helps."

Iocabe pulled her close. "You'll be alright. It must be the stress taking a toll." They stood there for a minute. "How soon will you be headed back to Angel's Rest?"

"Tomorrow evening. There's some trouble involving Wevern again."

"Which house is he on now?" Iocabe asked bemusedly.

"Fourth one. We're going to have to move him into the church, which is making a major portion of the priesthood none too happy. But I think that if we can keep him away from alchemy, we won't have any problems."

The door to the room opened quickly. One of Iocabe's informants stepped through the door. "Divine High Priest, Faenelle, I bring tidings from Lorelei."

"What is it?" Iocabe asked.

"The Thieves Guild is getting more active for some reason, and Lorelei's reconstruction is going well."

"Is that all?" Iocabe seemed agitated a this seemingly unimportant bit of news.

"From Lorelei, but I've also been gathering information on the lands to the south and east."

"Oh? What about it?"

"Remember how the Looters used to control that area? Well, I did some poking around, and while they still have some presence there, their dominion is deteriorating. They've been trading slaves recently to try and get their finances and cities straight, but they're quickly losing control. Conditions in their cities have been deplorable."

Iocabe smiled. "Which means that we stand to gain a lot of territory if that tunnel pans out."

The informant looked confused. "Tunnel?"

"It's a... oh, never mind. Where does their territory extend?"

"Bengaro, Dellston, Poulsbo, Littleton, Spineridge, and Appleton are all under Looter control, and the territory between the cities are dangerous to travel due to Looter presence."

Iocabe lapsed into a brief, thoughtful silence. "Head back to Lorelei and resume your post. You've been dismissed."

"Yes, sire." The informant turned and left.

"I take it you have an idea?" Faenelle asked.

"Yes. We'll liberate these towns from Looter control, and plant the flag of Sanctuary in their place. And once that's done, we'll expand eastward."

"That's assuming this tunnel works out. Getting an army through Lorelei without a massacre..." Fae said uncertainly.

"Do not worry, my darling. Telkavoth has not yet let us down, and I am confident he will not start now."

TUNNEL UNDER THE MOUNTAIN

"Get Ean and Trava back to the Troglodyte Castle. Trava deserves a decent burial, and Ean needs the attention of dedicated healers." John watched as a soldier grabbed what remained of Trava and escorted Ean back from whence they came. He then heard the priestess shout from the west end of the gallery. He rushed over, fearing the worst, but found that she was staring at the bases of old, worn pedestals. "Look." She said, pointing at the base of one of them. John brought the torchlight closer.

Several small shards of crystal, each the size of a small stone, were scattered about one of the pedestals. Each was a beautiful shade of white, gently glinting in the torchlight. John picked one of them up for closer inspection. It was really unremarkable, except for its color and elegance.

A soldier walked up behind John. "Me'be tha's ta source o' though crysals."

"Erm, what?"

"Well, I fond a bunch o' though crysals neer ta beestie nests." The soldier said in a heavily accented voice. John briefly wondered where in the world this guy was from.

"The creatures must have been hoarding them..." John thought for a minute, then pulled the pack off of his back. He opened it, upturned it, and emptied the contents. He then handed it to the priestess. "Gather all of the crystals, both here and at the creature nests, and take them back to a man named Wevern in Angel's Rest. Do not make any stops in-between. Those crystals may be holding a magical charge, and it could have harmful effects if you're in prolonged contact." John stood. "Meanwhile, I think the rest of us are going to see if there's a light at the end of this tunnel."

John headed the rest of his expedition north. He stumbled upon another set of tunnels not unlike the ones underneath the Troglodyte castle. But this area was different. It too had been divided into an upper and lower level, but the upper level had collapsed onto the lower, then smoothed out due to natural erosion. And at the north end of the wreckage, they could see-

"Daylight!" John shouted. He quickly ushered his men into a fast sprint, running for the visible light from the sun. They clambered over some last hurtles of wreckage, and emerged in the ruins of a primitive gatehouse. And beyond that, they could see small towns and green grass.

In Sharimik, Bekath also pulled a phaser and blasted the emissary. He then went to the altar of the shrine and pressed a few concealed buttons. All of Valorim began to shake, and Sharimik seemingly lifted away. It had been built on to of a massive spaceship. The ship fired on the Dominion of the Learned, obliterating their cities and territory. It then turned to the Hunters, destroying them. Erox was leveled by a photon torpedo. Lorelei didn't stand a chance, as the thieves guild was blown into nonexistence. And the New Empire Nikki was building was flattened by a sweep of the ship's phasers.

The ship of ultimate destruction then turned to the Vantanas. The phasers of the ship gently wiped all life from the face of the continent, then turned to the islands. Krell became but a smoldering memory. It then noticed a tiny ship between isles, and dropped an anvil on it for good measure.

The surface of Ermarian had been cleansed.

RUINS OF THE TROGLO CASTLE

"Over here!" The echo of the priest's voice reverberated to the leader of the scouts. The soldier approached the source of the sound, and saw a partially intact tunnel heading north. Unlike the other tunnels, though, this one was bigger, and more expertly excavated. This wasn't the work of the Troglodytes. John, the lead soldier, jaunted forward, to see if he could locate any other signs or indications that this tunnel linked to the Giant caves. He soon found very old blood stains, ancient weaponry, most of it broken, and several stones that were clearly not from the tunnel itself.

"I think this might be it." John said excitedly to the rest of the group. "But we'll need to see where it leads."

SHARIMIK

The door to the shrine opened again. The slith priest held it open for their guest to enter, then closed it quickly so as to keep the conversation private. The same group was there that had been before, save for a new priestess. Whilst most of the priesthood of Sanctuary wore traditional robes and garments, this one wore what could only be described as battle regalia. Studded armor, leather greaves and helm, along with what could only be a drake-skin cloak. She scoffed at the appearance of the missionary. Bekath gave the guest a cold stare and stated, "I presume that you wield actual authority?"

"I do." The missionary replied. Before he could say anything else, though, Bekath cut back in. "Good. Now, as I suppose that messenger boy told you, we'll leave on certain conditions decided upon by our benevolent ruler. The first of these," Bekath paused, watching the missionary closely, "is that anyone who wishes to follow the message of Sanctuary be allowed to leave Sharimik unaccosted. We will escort them out of the city, and none of them are to be harmed in any way."

"Sounds agreeable enough." The missionary stated cautiously.

"The second," Bekath continued, "is that no further advancement will be made upon our territory. The land beyond Sharimik is ours, and the Divine High Priest will not bear the insult of further encroachment by your kind. And finally," Bekath spoke louder, so as to not allow the missionary to speak, "any person of Sanctuary who wishes to travel near Sharimik or your lands will not be accosted. If you agree, we'll prepare to leave at once. If they are violated any way, the full wrath of Sanctuary will be brought down upon your cities and brethern."

"Do you accept these conditions?"

The entire shrine seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the answer.

AMINRO

Iocabe was on the city walls, looking out over the Grand Cathedral of Sanctuary. If the reports were correct, the main floor was almost usable. As it was, he could see the framework of the wonder stretch, yearning, towards the sky. All of this in the name of Telkavoth.

ISLAND OF KRELL, KRELL COUNCIL CHAMBER

This was quite possibly the oddest moment Nedar had ever experienced. For some reason, Redscale and the entire council just stared at him. "Are you okay?" He asked the slith.

Heads up people! Does anyone at anytime plan to take control of the Looters? If they do, now would be a good time, because I'll be in that area shortly (shortly here meaning within a few ICs).

If not, I'll just say that they're just a fractured remnant of what they used to be when I move on the area.

Exodus sequel? in Blades of Avernum

Don't bet on it. If Kelandon was going start designing again, that'd probably be the one thing he wouldn't touch with a 50-foot pole. Seeing how Exodus was (undeservedly) panned by major portions of the Blades community, the last thing he'd want to do is invite open season on himself for a second time.

There was some conversation on the subject in the Blades chat last December; take a look (But watch out for vulgar language, as these things aren't moderated).

A side note: the shadow beasts are nowhere near as strong as the guardian himself, are vulnerable to normal injury, and don't regenerate. So you're still up a creek, but at least there isn't a waterfall at the end. Hope you brought paddles!

OoC: I hope you don't mind the godmodding on Ahonar; no real harm was done, it was just more for demonstration.

The two entities briefly disengaged and sized each other up. Ahonar was astonished at how unremarkable the creature seemed. It could almost pass for human, if it weren't for the fact that it looked like it was made from some dark mass that was darker than any known substance, yet was still clearly visible.

"Ahonar... It's a pleasure to finally meet you." Its voice came out as a cross between a whisper and a low hiss. It held two swords made seemingly of the same material in its hands "And now... you die." The guardian struck with incredible ferocity, literally slashing through Ahonar's neck. If Ahonar had been mortal, it would have been curtains for him at that moment. As it was, Ahonar merely stumbled back, firing off a bolt of energy at the creature. The guardian took the blow without any reaction or injury, merely advancing on Ahonar. The two joined in a frenzied whirlwind of a melee, with neither side gaining ground. The guardian was fast, cunning, and strong, far more so than any mortal. It was taking every last drop of concentration and skill Ahonar had simply to avoid being overwhelmed. After two minutes, the guardian's attacks suddenly slackened. "Ah... a worthy foe." It hissed. Then, without warning, it vanished.

A shadowy javelin hurled itself at Ahonar, burying itself in his back, then seemingly melting into nothingness. Ahonar whirled on where it had come from, only to get hit in the back with another. Another hurtled from the shadows as Ahonar turned again, and as he swiveled yet again, he found yet another javelin striking him in his back. Tired, yet catching on, Ahonar made to turn, but just as another javelin came from the shadows, Ahonar whirled back and flung a massive blast of energy at the javelin's source. The energy illuminated the entire chamber as it flew, only to smash into a stretch of wall and dissipate.

Appearing directly in front of Ahonar, the being hissed, "You know, this is ac-" But before the guardian could finish, Ahonar blasted it with another jet of energy. The chamber had illuminated like before, but when the bolt hit, it actually blasted a hole clean through the guardian. It staggered as the room returned to shadow, and the injury healed back up. "Now that was just rude, Ahonar. Where are your manners?" The being advanced, conjuring a massive battleaxe. The guardian then seemed to throw several tiny drops of shadow at the adventurers standing at the foot of the stairs. The drops morphed as they flew, landing a few feet in front of them as massive, shadowy creatures with glowing red eyes, in mocking simulacrum of natural animals. The lot advanced as a bloodthirsty mob.

It appeared that Themis had his answer.

FACTION - The Sanctuary of Telkavoth.

IDEOLOGY - To unite Valorim, and possibly Ermarian, under one banner: their own. They believe that the will of Telkavoth guides them in their attempt to secure Valorim, and that it's the only way to survive against whatever Rakshasa are left, and if more Rakshasa ever grace the world again.

LEADER - Iocabe Havala, Divine High Priest of Telkavoth and of Sanctuary.

LOCATION - Central Valorim, based in the Karnold province and expanding into Midori.

CAPITOL - Aminro.

GOVERNMENT - Theocracy, worshiping Telkavoth. Priests form the ruling class.

RELIGION - The Church of Telkavoth is the official religion of Sanctuary. Amongst the pantheons which include him, Telkavoth is usually the god of Protection and Light. In Sanctuary, he also is the patron god of the nation. Other deities are generally tolerated, but priests of Telkavoth are the only ones who hold any great amount of political clout. Demonic gods, or gods generally considered evil, are not tolerated, though, and any civilian or priest caught worshiping one is, without exception, executed.

RELATIVE MILITARY STRENGTH - Fairly Strong. About a third of the population is trained to some degree in melee combat, and most of the priesthood (making up another quarter of the population) can fight to some degree as well with rites, blades, or both. Archers are extremely limited, and magery is almost non-existent. Overall military power is almost strictly limited to defense and intelligence gathering, and they have very few idle soldiers for any sort of offensive. This is changing, though, as Sanctuary is conscripting soldiers from the populace.

HISTORY - The Sanctuary of Telkavoth came about almost accidentally. Shortly before the bloody Time of the Star ended, Central Valorim was nothing short of a wasteland. A tiny handful of traveling priests and healers passed through the area of Angel's Rest, or what was left of it. The place had become a refugee camp, and the arrival of new healers, especially ones capable of defending a small encampment, was enthusiastically welcomed. Soon, the greater priests started rising to leadership through their deeds. Soon, Angel's Rest was no longer a camp, but a small village, returned to a modicum of its former self.

At this time, contact was established with Aminro, which had also started to come back from it's destruction. The contact quickly turned to assimilation, and the two villages aligned did what either separate could not; they started through a massive spurt of growth, with refugees becoming townsfolk, and new people arriving from elsewhere on the war-torn continent. A theocracy slowly formed, with Iocabe coming out on top.

However, the then new-born Sanctuary's progress ground to a halt. Though the Time of the Star had since ended, new problems brewed for the nation. The mineral resources left by the old ruins were exhausted, trading was extremely expensive and almost impossible, and further attempts to expand had been rebutted by other refugee clans and recovering villages who were less than willing to become one with Sanctuary. Not thirsty for more bloodshed, Sanctuary didn't press the issue. Fortunately, they also discovered the abandoned ruins of the Troglodyte Castle, which had doubled as a Rakshasi outpost, and gained an influx of materials from salvage efforts.

More recently, Sanctuary started construction of the Grand Cathedral of Sanctuary, which will serve not only as Telkavoth's primary place of worship, but also as Sanctuary's palace and administrative headquarters.

RANKS, TITLES, AND CLASSES
Divine High Priest of Telkavoth and Sanctuary (usually shortened to Divine High Priest) - The monarch of Sanctuary. The person holding this title usually is the most powerful priest of Telkavoth in Sanctuary lands, though being the most powerful is not a requirement. In order to ascend to leadership, one must be a loyal High Priest of Telkavoth (and the previous leader must not be in power).
This rank is held by Iocabe Havala.
Crusader - A rank and title that's comparable to Imperial Dervish, Crusaders (will) form Sanctuary's elite shock infantry. While their melee prowess falls mildly short of the Dervish of old, their priestly skills more than make up for those shortcomings. A Crusader is not a combatant with decent priestly skill, but rather a priest trained heavily in combat. Crusaders are armed with the finest armaments available, including a complete set of armor, a melee weapon (either longswords for swordsmen, spears for spearmen, or shortswords for archers/crossbowmen), and if the Crusader is a ranged fighter, a bow or crossbow.
Characters with this rank: Crusader Bekath.
Total number of people with this rank: 1 (with ten more potential Crusaders in training)

Wraith - A priest who specializes in rituals involving stealth and concealment. Used primarily for information gathering and spycraft, but they're a first choice whenever something covert needs to be done. Wraith usually carry a dagger in case they run into trouble, and sometimes have skill with lightweight unarmed combat.
Characters with this title: Wraith Allison.
Total number of people with this title: ~7.

Healer - A priest who specializes in healing and blessing arts. The purpose of healers is to heal the wounded and to also keep an eye on contagious disease. Healers usually have skill in potion making and more mundane forms of healing. Healers also will accompany forces to heal any injuries from battle and to also call blessings down upon allies. While most healers have mild offensive prowess, they tend to rely on others to protect them.
Total number of people with this title: ~18.

CHARACTERS (Do not kill bold characters without permission; italics mean the character is deceased.)
Divine High Priest Iocabe Havala - The Divine High Priest of Telkavoth, and ruler of Sanctuary. Currently in possession of what appears to be the Sword of Telkavoth. He presently resides in Aminro. He is the most skilled priest in Sanctuary, capable of magnificent rites, but his skill with swords is average.
Priestess Faenelle Havala - Iocabe's wife, and a priestess of Telkavoth. Presently resides in Angel's Rest, where she oversees day-to-day duties. She has skills with rituals, especially protective magics, and also is skilled with a crossbow. She seems to be suffering from some sort of occasional abdominal pain, which has resisted all efforts to be healed or cured.
Crusader Bekath - Newly appointed Crusader, and also the leader of the Crusaders. Originally stationed in Sharimik to convert the populace, before the Hunters moved in. Bekath is one of Iocabe's most trusted lieutenants. Greatly skilled in divine power and sticking someone with a blade.
Wevern - A mage of at least mediocre power. Resides in Angel's Rest, where he frequently manages to blow up, incinerate, or otherwise dismantle his abode. Marked as important simply because he comprises most of Sanctuary's magical capability.
Celsy Sarrin (character shared with Nikki) - Former leader/protector of the original four towns in southwest Valorim and sister of Dervish Victor Gathin, she decided to flee her duties. She wound up on Sanctuary borders, assaulted and nearly killed by brigands. A Sanctuary patrol rescued her, and she eventually met with Iocabe himself, who (much to her chagrin) ordered her back to southwest Valorim to deliver a response to the Phoenix Empire. It turns out that she's the sister of Gathin, who sent her back with a response to Sanctuary. She left just in time as well; she managed to escape before the Phoenix Empire was subjected to a full-scale attack.
Wraith Amarfrra - Sanctuary's best Wraith, skilled in reconnaissance, assassination, combat, and shade-summoning. Rescued Shamgar and Ferrrald from Sharimik. Has a suspicious lack of emotions.
Wraith Allison - A Wraith who scouted out the Looters strength southeast of Lorelei. Skilled with a dagger and hand-to-hand combat, and one of Sanctury's best intelligence-gatherers (mostly because of her unorthodox methods). Currently en route to Lorelei to locate and contact the Thieves Guild.
Dewiss - A slith priest of Serrotis, currently stationed in Sharimik. Confrontational, excellent with rites that cause severe injury or debilitation, yet physically frail. Extremely (and understandably) at odds with the Hunters. Currently second-in-command to the leader of the Midori expedition.
• Bresnen - The leader of the expedition in Midori.
• Mayor Sarah Watson - The very recently instated mayor of Dellston and a priestess of Telkavoth.
• John - A soldier that lead a successful investigation into a possible route under the mountain range on Sanctuary's north and eastern edges. Used to guard Divine High Priest Iocabe Havala.
• Nedar - A priest and Sanctuary spy/emissary in Krell. He tried to get an alliance with the Order of Krell, but due to the political climate in the Vantanas, the negotiations fell through.
• Lorelei Informant - A Wraith stationed in Lorelei to gather intelligence.
Ava - A priestess of mediocre power who specializes in combat rituals. She delivered some white crystal shards to Wevern in Angel's Rest, and wore a necklace with one of the shards. Presumed dead after a large beast was found in her home.

IMPORTANT ITEMS & ARTIFACTS
The Sword of Telkavoth - A holy blade that figures into Sanctuary's religion. It's a glowing silver blade with a ruby inset upon the pommel. Iocabe revealed that he has a short sword that matches the description of the legendary blade almost exactly, but whether the two are the same is as of yet unknown.
White Crystal Shards - Some white crystal shards found in the tunnel underneath the mountain northeast of Sanctuary territory (A3 players will recognize them as the shards left by the Vahnatai barrier projector). A priestess by the name of Ava was tasked to take the shards back to Angel's Rest to be examined by Wevern. Wevern then determined the shards to be dormant. All of the shards are the size of a small stone.

SPHERE OF INFLUENCE - Angel's Rest, Aminro, and all territory between and to the northeast of these towns are firmly under Sanctuary control. Sanctuary has also secured territory beyond the mountain range, taking control of the Giant fortress ruins and Dellston. Sanctuary has a weak presence in Sharimik, but has effectively been isolated from the main population.

Expansion was blocked by natural barriers such as rivers and mountains, and its sphere of influence wass limited by these barriers so greatly that it has been effectively stuck where it was at. However, atunnel in the Troglodyte Caves allowed expansion to the northeast. Expansion is now only limited by other factions and Sanctuary's current resources and manpower.

Sanctuary also has a few scattered Wraith around Valorim, and one contact in Vantanas.

RELATIONS WITH OTHER FACTIONS (in order of importance)
Neo-Hunter Empire - Highly distrusted by Sanctuary. These feelings are unaided by both launching a war of words for Sharimik (which the Hunters effectively won), their respective territories butting up against each other, and because both of their visions for Valorim involve the respective factions having total control. Sanctuary is not engaging in hostilities yet with the Hunters, but they are preparing for a possible future war.
Thieves Guild - Has knowledge of existence. A Wraith is in Sharimik rescuing two of the guild's members (though Sanctuary is unaware of the pair's identity).
Phoenix Empire - Currently engaging in cordial diplomacy. A general agreement or an alliance may be in the works.
Enlightened Anama - Well-known, which is why if the two factions ever meet, hostilities are likely to result.
Order of Krell - Engaged in diplomacy, but failed to achieve anything.

SUMMARY
#1 - A New Faith - Faction introduction; Iocabe shows unease at success of Hunters in Sharimik.
Dominion of the Learned #1 - Diego brings news of Sanctuary to Demetrius, referring to it as 'some cult'. Both deem it a non-threat.
#2 - Winning Over - Vantanas spy Nedar reports Clearwater's death, and Iocabe orders him to open diplomacy with Order of Krell. Brazen Sanctuary priestess publicly denounces the Hunters in Sharimik.
Neo-Hunter Empire #2 - Claw Hardblade holds disdain for Sanctuary; Hunter representative deals a major blow to Sanctuary's attempts to convert Sharimik by freeing slaves.
#3 - Long Shots - Iocabe holds discussion with advisers, revealing that Sanctuary economy is weak, and that their only option is to expand. A possible tunnel under the mountains that existed during the time of the Plagues piques interest, and Iocabe sends scouts to the ruined Troglo castle to investigate. Vantanas spy receives orders and proceeds to Ivrel.
Order of Krell #3 - Nedar (Vantanas spy) gets a cold reception from the Order of Krell. Brother Redscale nevertheless decides to hear him out.
#4 - Wevern - After an initially poor reception, Nedar lays out Sanctuary's offer. Iocabe reveals that he may have a divine artifact from Telkavoth, and also steels himself for a possible future war with the Hunters. On a lighter note, Sanctuary has a mage capable of blowing up his own house in Angel's Rest. Searches for the tunnel at the Troglo castle turn up nothing thus far.
Neo-Hunter Empire #3 - Hunter representative goes to a shrine of Sanctuary in Sharimik to discuss the situation there.
#5 - Authority - Hunter representative meets with Sanctuary priests in a shrine in Sharimik to discuss Sanctuary withdrawing from Sharimik. High Priest Bekath confirms that they're considering it, but refuse to negotiate unless they speak with someone in authority. Representative is turned away, and the priests send a warning to Iocabe about the situation. Scout party in the Troglo castle ruins decides to split up, so as to cover more ground.
Neo-Hunter Empire #4 - The leader of the Hunters in Sharimik goes to negotiate with Sanctuary.
#6 - Nearing Completion - John locates what could potentially be the under-mountain passage. Bekath states his conditions for leaving Sharimik, which include safe travel for Sanctuary civilians and priests, and to stop expansion northward and eastward. The main floor of the Grand Cathedral of Sanctuary nears completion.
Neo-Hunter Empire #5 - The Hunter missionary in Sharimik countermands Bekath, stating that the Hunters do not want Sanctuary to withdraw from Sharimik. He offers not only safe travel, but to waive their laws around the Sanctuary district. However, he also states that land to the north is free land, and that Sanctuary has no right to claim them. Elsewhere, Brother Evergreen, in discussion with the Dominion of the Learned, states that the Hunters consider Sanctuary a threat, along with the Anama.
#7 - Morose and Monroe - Dewiss, the slith priest in Sharimik, angrily confronts the Hunter emissary about his proposal, claiming that Sanctuary is smarter than to walk into such a trap, and that non-humans from Sanctuary would not get the same exemption. Bekath reprimands the priest, but pushes his second point. The Hunter ideology is about disposing of all non-humans, one way or another, and yet they'd allow a safe zone within their own territory for non-humans to potentially inhabit? Meanwhile, John's expedition runs into trouble down in the tunnels. They come across a nest of monsters in a widened gallery that mostly consists of ordinary lizards. However, they come across some horrific magic-immune mutant with orange, caustic blood that manages to wound one man and kill another before being brought down. A man in Aminro attempts to teach potential archers, with mixed results. Faenelle, Iocabe's wife, watches. She then suffers from severe abdominal pain which passes after a few seconds. Apparently, the condition has resisted all attempts to cure it. An informant from Lorelei brings news of its reconstruction, and also of the Looters to the east of Lorelei. They've apparently weakened greatly since the Time of the Star, and are losing control of their territory fast. Iocabe sees an opportunity. Back in the tunnel, the expedition finds unusual white crystal shards, which John decides to have sent back to Angel's Rest for examination. He proceeds down the tunnel, and eventually comes out on the other side of the mountain, proving that there's a direct connection between Sanctuary territory and the Monroe province.
Neo-Hunter Empire #6 - Hunter emissary reveals the true depth of racism prevalent in Hunter lands. He guarantees safety inside the Sanctuary safe-zone, but mandates that badges must worn by non-humans to dictate them as Sanctuary property outside the safe-zone.
Thieves Guild #7 - Shamgar and Ferrrald are captured in Sharimik.
#8 - Wraith and Crusader - Bekath reveals to Iocabe that he accepted the Hunter's proposition. He also reports of Shamgar and Ferrrald's capture, though at this point, he is unaware of their affiliation or identities. Iocabe decides to send a Wraith to investigate. Iocabe then appoints Bekath as a Crusader, and orders him to train ten other clerics in the ways of elite combat and worship. In Angel's Rest, Wevern reports that the crystal shards were benign. He and Faenelle decide to sell most of the crystal shards, keeping a few for magical research. Ava is also wearing one as a necklace. South of Aminro, a Sanctuary patrol rescues a soldier (Sarrin) from brigands. A Wraith named Allison scouted Dellston for Looter strength. She was accosted by a Looter thug, whom she easily dispatched. He had unwittingly provided her with her answer; their meager response meant that they couldn't spare much in the way of manpower to resist Sanctuary.
The Phoenix Empire #8 - The Empire sends an emissary, Sister Clarice Beumont, to Sanctuary with a letter.
Neo-Hunter Empire #7 - The Hunters box the Sanctuary safe-zone out of Sharimik.
#9 - A Matter of When - A Sanctuary Wraith rescues Shamgar and Ferrrald from their cell, knocking the interrogator out cold and drugging three other guards in the process. The trio enter Sharimik sewers. Faenelle learns that Ava is behaving erratically. In Dellston, Sanctuary forces take the city as their own, fending off a Looter attack soundly and removing their presence from the city. In Aminro, Iocabe recalls the events of the day, which had gone fairly poorly for him. He met with Sarrin, received a message about the 'embassy' getting walled off, and finally heard back from Nedar; negotiations with the Order of Krell had failed. The body of Clarice Beumont was then brought to his attention; she was killed on the Sanctuary/Hunter border. Thankfully, the letter she was carrying was still on her person. Iocabe believes the Hunters were behind the attack. He sends a reply with Sarrin back to the Phoenix Empire. Iocabe then orders the conscription of soldiers from the the civilian populace, and the fortification of Aminro and Angel's Rest. He concludes that war with the Hunters now is inevitable, and is only a question of when.
Thieves Guild #8 - Amadis slips a Sanctuary acolyte a letter in Dellston, explaining about himself and the Thieves Guild.
The Phoenix Empire #9 - Sarrin arrives in Delan and confers with her brother, Dervish Gathin, who happens to lead the Phoenix Empire. He sends Sarrin with a response back to Aminro to arrange a meeting.
Dominion of the Learned #4 - Demetrius reveals plans to send both a diplomat and an agent to Sanctuary.
