Out of curiosity, what other Spidweb games would you describe as having a strong plot?

It sounds like Jeff has put his work into making sure players can just go and beat up stuff without worrying about the story & characters rather than trying to improve them.

In a way, I can respect that. He's now trying to simply make mindlessly fun games that are good mindless fun. While I'd prefer to see something with real artistic value, it's certainly true that good drama and good gameplay have a tendency to get in the way of each other, and I can't really fault him for deciding to go with the one and do it properly at the expense of the other.

But dammit, why can't more people make games like Traffic Department 2192? :(

Ah, right. Might be tough though, because she was probably Christian.

That only makes everything simpler. Aran can just don a pair of sunglasses and a leather jacket, play up the accent a bit, and kill everyone in the phone book with her name.

And then go back forward in time and become the Republican Governer of California.

Exactly what was that anyway?

This is a joke so in that I think only I get it; but I couldn't resist.

The most efficent coding scheme should assign the shortest symbol to the most commonly used statement. So I have decided that "1" should denote a standard expression of wry bemusement, which would surely be my most frequently used single posting around here. This is a radical way to conserve bandwidth.

More generally, I guess, by posting "1" I am alluding to the idea of having short symbols standing for arbitrarily long and complicated ideas, as in what Golem XIV called 'metalangs'. For some reason this bemuses me greatly.

Further proof that Trinity is more awesome than a poodle in a policeman costume.

For people in the city, it's easy. There's not much to worry about except the occasional venomous spider. Or Great White Sharks if you go swimming. And some Queensland cities get crocs swimming down the street occasionally when it floods. But basically nothing to worry about.

In the bush, well, you just get used to it. Even though there's loads of stuff that could kill you, it usually doesn't. Kangaroos are big, strong animals, but I've only ever had one try to attack me. Snakes typically leave you alone if you leave them alone, so the idea is not to bother them until after you've grabbed a spade. And on and on it goes. It sounds like it would be a big deal to go swimming with stingrays, but it's not really.

Well, I'm pretty vague on how old everyone is here, since it doesn't matter, so this may not apply at all to Salmon or Thuryl. But a lot of people are content with their material lot as students, or in other whippersnapper roles in life, where $1000 can represent several years worth of savings. Quite a lot of these people, however, then move quite abruptly into real jobs. Even at modest 'starting' salaries, this represents a staggering influx of cash, which keeps on coming in every month! Heck, even a graduate student stipend, which is hardly in the 'real job' category, is a whole level above having to subsist all year on what you earned in a lousy student's summer job. When you actually do have significant disposable income, and reasonably solid prospects for it to continue, you start to wonder what would really be the point in just letting it pile up as digits on your ATM slips. And you're happy to develop your own tastes and preferences as a consumer.
That did sorta happen to me, but I didn't go on a spending spree. Once I'd amassed a substantial amount I kinda looked at it and wondered why I was working if I wasn't spending it. So I quit my job, and did volunteer work instead.

Kel - Something I've always been sorta curious about is Jesus' description of himself as "the Son of Man". I've never really understood why he said that. Does this have some sort of meaning in the original that gets lost in translation?

A possibilty that popped into my head was that he was actually referring to himself as "the Son of Adam". However, not understanding the subtleties of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, I don't know whether this has something to it or is just a random wacky idea.

Not really related to the discussion at hand, but it looked like a good spot to ask.

Is there a zoo with Australian animals anywhere around where you live? Try going there and asking to see the drop-bears. See for yourself.

I'm like Thuryl. I'm very much content with contentment. I'd rather work in a low-paying job I enjoy and go without a $20, 000 car and all the rest rather than chase money.

Drop bears do in fact exist. We like to tell the tourists that they're made up, but that's just so we can laugh at them when they get hit by a "cute, cuddly Koala" when they're trying to get a close look at them. The Wikipedia article is either an elaborate joke, or more likely, written by someone who believes the urban myth. Even some of the Australians I've talked to think they're just a story. You do have to get a fair way inland before you'll start seeing them, but they're for real.

They aren't really all that dangerous. They'll give you a fairly bad headache and a few bites, but they aren't as bad as they're hyped up to be. Mainly they're just funny. Nowhere near as bad as feral pigs.

The whole "never been captured on camera" thing is BS. It's just that they look pretty much like any other kind of Koala. There are subtle differences, but you need to know what to look for. I don't know if anyone's gotten footage of them actually dropping, though. They're nocturnal, so it's not too easy to get a good shot.

That would be kinda interesting, actually. Though it would mess with my livelihood. :P

But then, what do you do with the Wal-Marts? Are they obliged to stock everything? How do you decide who gets the eye-level shelf? Or do you ban retail altogether?
