Agreed.

Honestly, if you have creatures that can be manipulated by tools like computers, you could have a lot more power with tool use rather than "you're allowed to take this alternate path since you have x of a certain skill".

For instance, if you have tool skill, perhaps you might be able to repair some types of broken batons, create magical crystals with living tools and the right type of crystal/gem, etc. Heck, maybe you could even create copies of keys without having to steal them from their owners.

I like the ideas. They might just provide a sense of innovation that a series of 3+ games ends up needing quite badly after a while.

EDIT: Ooh! Before I forget- if you have weather, you may want to give the party spells to control the weather. Imagine, creating gusts to foil ranged attackers, thunderstorms to zap armored foes, etc... For that matter- if you make weather effects, have each metal item the player wears increase the odds of the player's getting struck!

Thought experiment- Let's say we americans, europeans, etc. tomorrow essentially get taken over by the Arabs. Our country's economy is reduced to nothing, and we're constantly impovrished, missing access to basic services. The Arabs basically bomb the crap out of the east coast for fun and to guarantee that they constantly reap the benefits of "trading" with us. Christianity is portrayed as a barbarous religion, and the pope is considered a terrorist leader who must be apprehended and killed at any cost. (Caveat- some might actually consider the pope a terrorist leader, but for sake of argument, we'll assume that he wasn't before. Also, for purposes of argument, we'll assume that christianity isn't already a barbaric and heartless religion. Which, in very few cases, is true.)

Then, some man in a turban decides to say that there is a deep fear of criticizing christianity, and that whatever pieces of culture haven't literally been obliterated should be destroyed figuratively. Then, the whole world revolves around america and says that this proves how barbaric these "christ-eaters" truly are when some of its more enraged practicioners decide to burn down embassies of a race that only exists to exploit them anyway.

I guess what I'm saying is, you can't hold them to the exact, same "tabula rasa" standards when you aren't asking your friend how many family members were brutally tortured by Saudi captors this week.

Point taken. But for something like "deodorant," you're going to have to purchase the product anyway. I mean, so far as any human being who doesn't want to smell like crap is concerned, product A is unavoidable. So, I guess, my point still stands.

Here's the golden question: Are we stupid enough to buy products just because we hear their names, or are we stupid enough to buy products because we believe their lies? Choose your color of fur; it still implies that we're all sheep.

As for whether or not people believe that deodorants will allow them to have sex with women, I think that most people are aware that it most certainly will do no such thing.

On the other hand, misandry (though still no competitor to chauvinism) actually exists. Advertisers have already proven that women can be manipulated into hating themselves in order to buy products. If men can be manipulated in the same way, who's to suffer but the poor saps who buy the product? If someone is desperate and buying a product might temporarilly dismiss those fears, the product becomes that much more apetizing.

(And if you're curious, my deodorant is currently a stick of whatever-the-brand-is I found under the sink from '99. The contents have somehow leaked out of the package and encrusted themselves over the side, but it works.)

Oh, please. If we're going to bash chauvinist advertisments, let's start with the worst:
IMAGE(http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000B5S5EC.01-A1061HNO9OEDDI._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg)

And I don't know why anti-sex sentiment is considered "feminist". There is nothing inherently sexist about the act of intercourse. The only caveat for this is if one assumes that one cannot dispense of one's own sexism, in which case one has already proven one's sexism.

There are certainly many things wrong with the modern "promiscuity scene"- for starters, date rape, pressuring women into being exploited for sex, treating women as objects, rendering them childish and mentally impotent, et cetera. "Sex is being had" is not one of those problems.

Well, you could be constantly taking your clothes off while an attendant is putting them back on...

Meanwhile, my take on sex- every moment you spend debating it on the internet is a moment you're spent not doing it.

Take that as you will.

"Personally, I think the gameplay has decayed from the beginning. FF1 is easily my favorite combat model. Imagine that, having blows miss is a regular occurance!"

I like the idea of missing, but I don't like the idea of feeling like you're going through the same motions at the beginning of the game. FF combat systems are nice because they offer you a bit of reprieve from the mundane for a good, long while- when did you have Jobs/Espers/Materia/Junctions etc mastered? Probably your second playthrough. FF1 doesn't give you any such luxury.

"I actually liked Zande and the Cloud of Darkness at the end of FF3. Back in the 80s that particular storyline was a lot less hackneyed."

Can't comment; haven't gotten a copy of FF3 yet since it hasn't been ported and fansubs are elusive.

"They also provide some backstory that makes Zemus/Zeromus (and many other parts of FF4) a lot less painful."

Nothing can make "he's an evil moon spirit" less painful.

What can be said? FF9 was supposed to be reminiscent of the "classics". Chaos? Zeromus? Neo X-Deth?
There is an elusive pattern being formed here.

Gameplay-wise, it gets pretty close. FF7's Materia is just as good as FF6's Espers, both aren't as good as FF5's Job system, and all three are better than FF8's Draw/Junction system. Mind you, Junctioning is fun, but Draw... Absolute torture.

Plot-wise, FF7 for the win. FF6 had an excellent villain and FF8 had believable characters, but FF7's characters beat FF8's and Sephiroth is simply the best villain there is.

(In fact, if anyone can name me villains that haven't sucked utterly before OR after FF6+7, I'd be surprised. Chaos, Emperor, Zeromus and Ex-Death have all been quite horrible.)
