TM has made it clear that he is referring to the music played during the last battles of Final Fantasies 6, 7, and 8. He has not clarified what prompted this query.

Anyone asking TM for a reason probably deserves the likely response.

If she (he?!) is walking through the flames like that, I assume she must have some kind of fire immunity. So no pain.

But then, I don't know jack about FF.

Considering the fact that of the 3 choices, I've only beaten VII, I guess I'll go for One-Winged Angel. I only ever played VI at a friend's house and thought VIII was a steaming pile of crap. IX, however, that was a great game, the best Final Fantasy, in my opinion.

Well, FF8 was a game that was pretty much devoid of intelligent life forms. Honestly, it gets my vote for worst sequel ever.

I liked FF8 a lot more than pretty much any other entry in the series, although FF6 was definitely the most fun.

I liked everything but the story and characters in VIII. Of course, VIII wasn't nearly as bad as X-2, and I doubt that I will like XII either. I played the demo that came with Dragonquest VIII, and hated the combat sytem. That system works fine for Kingdom Hearts, but Final Fantasy has always been, and should always be turn-based in the style that all the others have.

Gameplay-wise, it gets pretty close. FF7's Materia is just as good as FF6's Espers, both aren't as good as FF5's Job system, and all three are better than FF8's Draw/Junction system. Mind you, Junctioning is fun, but Draw... Absolute torture.

Plot-wise, FF7 for the win. FF6 had an excellent villain and FF8 had believable characters, but FF7's characters beat FF8's and Sephiroth is simply the best villain there is.

(In fact, if anyone can name me villains that haven't sucked utterly before OR after FF6+7, I'd be surprised. Chaos, Emperor, Zeromus and Ex-Death have all been quite horrible.)

I don't like Sephiroth or Kefka. I also do not believe that Sephiroth is the best villian.

Ever played Xenosaga? Albedo scares me silly with that laugh of his.

Sephiroth gets my vote. Of the Final Fantasy games I've played, Chaos seems to just jump out of nowhere for a final confrontation at the end. Sin/Jecht were to strange, and didnt even seem to be evil, quite unlike Sephiroth. I can't even remember Final Fantasy 2's villain, so it obviously wasn't very inspiring. I think Sephiroth worked so well for me because a lot of time was spent developing his character, and getting to know him. Plus he looks bad and has a big sword.

I loved FF9, but the endboss was ridiculous.

You finally beat Kuja, the man who has been manipulating people and destroying cities. Suddenly, with literally no previous mention or even hint of his existance whatsoever, you have to fight Necron. Who the hell is Necron? Why did they need a big cliched god of death that just comes out of nowhere? Nobody really knows. They should have made Kuja harder and just wrapped everything up right then instead of dragging it out with some stupid random fight.

What can be said? FF9 was supposed to be reminiscent of the "classics". Chaos? Zeromus? Neo X-Deth?
There is an elusive pattern being formed here.

Personally, I think the gameplay has decayed from the beginning. FF1 is easily my favorite combat model. Imagine that, having blows miss is a regular occurance! The (controlled) randomness makes combat much more interesting and fun. 3 and 4 were similar, less challenging but more varied. 5-7 were still decent, but had silly power escalation that removed *all* the challenge. Since then, the yuck factor has continued to increase...

I actually liked Zande and the Cloud of Darkness at the end of FF3. Back in the 80s that particular storyline was a lot less hackneyed. They also provide some backstory that makes Zemus/Zeromus (and many other parts of FF4) a lot less painful.

I agree. Final Fantasy IX is by far my favorite, followed by VII. The end battle sequence was extremely dissapointing, however. Kuja was a pretty dumb villain anyway.

I like the idea of missing, but I don't like the idea of feeling like you're going through the same motions at the beginning of the game. FF combat systems are nice because they offer you a bit of reprieve from the mundane for a good, long while- when did you have Jobs/Espers/Materia/Junctions etc mastered? Probably your second playthrough. FF1 doesn't give you any such luxury.

"I actually liked Zande and the Cloud of Darkness at the end of FF3. Back in the 80s that particular storyline was a lot less hackneyed."

Can't comment; haven't gotten a copy of FF3 yet since it hasn't been ported and fansubs are elusive.

"They also provide some backstory that makes Zemus/Zeromus (and many other parts of FF4) a lot less painful."

Nothing can make "he's an evil moon spirit" less painful.

On Jobs/Espers/Materia/etc -- I have mixed feelings about all those systems. Initially, they are cool, and are usually a lot of fun for a while. But, and this goes to the old Spidweb debate about open-ended character design vs character classes, the systems annoy me because they tend to erode differences between characters. This was especially true in FF6, where anyone could learn any spell, and few special abilities were better than spells. Last time I played it, I did it without ever equipping Espers, and the game was honestly a lot more fun. OTOH I like being forced to find the best way to use, say, a Bl.WIZ with limiting characteristics but also unique spells. *shrug* Personal preference I guess.

There's a good FF3 patch out there, which you can use to emulate it in English. I don't remember who did the patch, but it's been out for at least five or six years now. FF3 is a really wonderful game. It plays a lot like FF4, but has class changing somewhat similar to FF5, and none of the annoying whiny characters that plague both 4 and 5. It introduces [I]so many[/I} FF mainstays: chocobos, espers, moogles, spells, most of the classes.

And yeah, the whole Lunarian thing is hard to salvage. With the backstory, though, the crystals and the light/dark balance become much more important, which helps.
