You gain territory when you surround that territory on all of its sides. Not counting Moki (I'll get to that later), Black has 7 moku, and white has 2 moku. At the end of a game, however, you can reduce your opponent's moku by however many of their stones you captured. How do you capture stones? Simple- when you surround a stone formation on all sides (you don't need corners, just sides), the stone is captured. That raises the question... ...who wins? Because it's generally believed that black has the upper hand, it has a 5.5 moku handicap, called a "Moki". (In China, moki is 7.5, and if I'm not mistaken, Korea has it at 8.5) Counting up territory, black has 7, and white has 3. After factoring in stones captured, black has 6, and white has 2. Nearly impassible mountains are just as fierce as an ocean, and considering that the Nephilim had heavilly saturated Valorim, I can see why the Empire would have a difficult time claiming the continent. Vantanas decidedly has no deserts. Aizo is not all that large. And you forgot Doston, the slightly rocky, otherwise non-descript continent a ways west of Valorim. At the time of Exile, the established route from Aizo to Pralgad (where their respective Empires clashed ages ago) is NE from Aizo to Pralgad. Vantanas is ENE of Aizo.
