Strange... Those bugs you mention didn't happen in my game session. I'm using the PC version, but I always assumed that the only difference between the two versions is how BoA handles the pics... So the scripts should be the same.

Concentrated Linearity Debate (New Voices Welcome to Participate and Vote) in Blades of Avernum

There will be both type of scenarios, so pick the ones you fancy.

I guess, and I might be wrong, that any scenario maker will do a scenario with his own tastes in mind, not others' (although he probably won't ignore some advice and do some things to please a wider audience).

But judging other RPG's, the most successful ones were linear or non-linear but with a strong main story/quest.

The completely non-linear ones (rare!) were the most criticized ones. Maybe Morrowind is an exception, but sure everyone had higher expectations for that game. I, myself, didn't enjoy it.

In my opinion, a good story is the fuel that keeps players going on. And it's much, but MUCH more easier to make a good story with a linear scenario.

A mixture of both types would be the ideal, but I wonder how many will be able to do that. Complexity, time and endurance can be negative factors for those creators.

I changed the news and scenario's page content, and also added that the scenario is not only for PC, it just must be converted. Once the Mac version is available, I'll add it to the site.

As for the BoE vs BoA debate, choice seems to be between "more" (BoE) and "better" (BoA).
I can't understand why the party size went down from 6 to 4 in BoA ? It gives much less party composition choice and limit tactics, what good does it have ?

I've played, long ago, the BoE demo. I must confess that BoA was the only one that convinced me about registering. Not only because it looks much better, but because it offers better tools fro scenario designers (specially AvernumScript). The only reason there aren't as many scenarios for BoA as for BoE is because BoE is older and BoA's scenarios are more difficult to make (but more rewarding) so it takes more time. But give it time and you'll see more and more scenarios appear.

Scenarios in Development in Blades of Avernum

Roussa is in a very slow development.

It's meant to be a compelling mystery adventure, with strong (characters/personalities) NPCs. Plus some surprises.

Unfortunately, it won't be easy to pass from the paper to the editor. I'm considering the Editor's and AvernumScript's limits and trying to adjust the project to them, without loosing the initial quality objectives.

I must be sure that the project is executable before spending hours in the editor to find out that I can't do this or that, and change the scenario for the worse.

I think I was caught in the perfectionism trap. I'm considering about making a small and much less ambitious scenario first. To practice.

But Roussa, on the paper, is almost done. Just some pending difficulties still hanging. I guess I will put it aside for a while and start planning a smaller scenario. :)

Having only BoA, I wonder why BoE must be ordered with a CD. I guess it only adds to spidweb's and the client's cost. Or has it any goodies (printed manual, maps, and such)?

Welcome, PDF. :)

Generally the scenario's author gives us the recommended party levels. If your party isn't high enough for a certain scenario, it's not impossible, but maybe it would be better to play another scenario with a lower level parties required. If your party's level is too high, and you want the scenario to be challenging, then follow Thuryl's recommendation: the HLPM will help you create a party with the level you want.

Article - bjlhct2 On Scenario Design pt 1: Linearity in Blades of Avernum

In my opinion, a good game must keep the player entertained. In my case, a too open ended game might became boring. A good story is the fuel that keeps players going on, but for a good story be told, the designer must have more control. Now, giving more control and linearity to designers, doesn't mean no freedom for players. It's a matter of finding a good balance. But if I had to choose one of those two extremes, I would certainly prefer the linear scenarios.

I prefer a story-driven game than an open ended mind numbing game (dungeon hacks, no specific goals, no game's feedback, repetition, etc).

Yes, except Xerch'de, I've asked permission. Either by email or through the forum. About your Canopy scenario, I assumed that since you allowed me to publish your work at the time, you wouldn't mind me publishing future works (scenarios, etc). I might be wrong.

About the links, I've added them to the site, as you requested.

Kendl: It was TheCreator who granted me the right, so it must be TheCreator to revoke it. I don't know if what you say is true or not, but it's simple to know: let TheCreator login and post.

Kelandon: I was wrong but acted in good faith. However I still owe apologies. Because even if your behaviour was "less than diplomatic" (to say it nicely), I shouldn't had reacted the same way.

Is this issue closed, *i?

Thanks Dastal for taking your time explaining the laws (instead of just saying I'm wrong and that's it). And thanks for pointing out *i's bad conduct in this case.

Thanks Aluion, for pointing this out:

quote:
What it is talking about here is not the scenarios made by the Program, but the other programs that may derivate from the editation of or additions to the source code of said Program, as well as the Program itself.

In other words, you have the right to distribute The Blades of Avernum Editor, and it is implied that you can distribute any derivations therefrom (Such as the 3D editor).
Kelandon: You honored your part of the bargain, I'll honor my part.

Having all this in consideration, I'll be coeherent to myself:

1. I was shown I really might be wrong about my License interpretation, so I must act accordingly. Mind you that I wasn't being stubborn, I was just defending what looked like the right thing to do.

2. Since Kelandon gave his apologies and reformulated his request and the reasons behind it; since we agreed to reach a conclusion to this matter after that.

3. Since my only interest here is to contribute and serve the community. I couldn't avoid defending myself agains't what was being an attack to my site, me and my reputation. I felt wronged and target of some malice by certain parties. I feel that there was already enough clarification about the subject, and I'll act in the best interest of the first line of point 3: contribute and serve the community.

4. I disagree about BoAC being a divisive factor for the community. It's quite the opposite. As a matter of fact, it generated even more BoA and specially BoA's Editor users and revealed itself a useful resource for all potential creators (its traffic leads me to that conclusion). Every work in there is given exposure that it wouldn't have otherwise, so I sincerely believe that BoAC pros clearly surpass the cons.

Conclusion, I'll remove Kelandon's works as requested, as soon as I gain the site's control.

PS: Ash Lael, I think it should be TheCreator to request that. I don't know if you're TheCreator or not, so I can't act. If you're TheCreator, please login with that account and request again, if you're still willing me to remove your work.

Best regards,
Overwhelming

EDIT: Hum... It seems squarespace has given me reason, as I can see my site was restored. Anyway, I'll keep my word and I'm removing Kelandon's works.

If I'm being stubborn, you're being no less. Read the BoA Editor License:

quote:
2. GRANT OF RIGHTS

a) Subject to the terms of this Agreement, each Contributor hereby grants Recipient a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free copyright license to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, publicly display, publicly perform, distribute and sublicense the Contribution of such Contributor, if any, and such derivative works, in source code and object code form.
Who's the recipient?

quote:
"Recipient" means anyone who receives the Program under this Agreement, including all Contributors.
Should I continue? Well, I guess we're all getting bored with this issue.

It's a matter of fairness and justice. As matter of fact, if you had been more polite and less offensive in the first PM, I could have removed the works, even if I technically don't have to. But your behaviour was malicious and offensive (no matter what you say).

All added: unless someone shows me i'm giving a bad interpretation to the law (which is very unlikely), I won't remove your works. Or remove them temporarily until the matter is solved with squarespace until they assess this situation and the legal aspects.

Let's wait and see.

I forgot to reply *i:

This way I can make an informed judgment. Your actions must be both legal and not mean spirited.

Also, I was not comparing you to the American Nazi party, using it as an example. Identify the difference.

1. Do you need to hear? Can't you judge yourself? Read the BoA Editor license. I'll post here the relevant part again, if you want. And even quote some other part that imply that it's not only Spidweb who has the non-exclusive rights. I'll explain it in detail, if you want.
Anyway, to take an action again't a forum member, you must justify it with the CoC and the Law. You didn't. You just acted aggains't me, before even judging fairly. I think that's not the right procedure.

2. I offered Kelandon the oportunity to post here the PM's. It seems he didn't. We can only wonder why. About other public posts, it's a matter of searching the forum.

3. Sure... The American Nazi example was just a harmless and unintentional comparison.

Thanks, Aluion, for sharing your unbiased insight in this matter. What you say is true and how I interpreted Kelandon's action.

About my site being shut down, I just returned home today, to find it shut (you were wise enoughto contact squarespace while I was away, unable to reply and defend myself). Already checked my email and I didn't even get a notice or something from Squarespace.com. I've already wrote them about this matter, explaining my view on this case, as well as my legal view. Let's see the response.

The site is suspended, not deleted. (Or I hope the "suspended" means it's not deleted ;) ).

For the little elite group who couldn't bear my site's existence, congratulations for your demonstration of power, overuling fairness, this board's CoC and acting agains't a site that just wants to promote Jeff's game, promote more fans to the game and scenario creators. Your personal ego is surely satisfied, it's a pity you didn't had in consideration Spidweb and your sipdweb community member who just wanted to contribute and had the endurance to make it happen and never attacked others.

But let's see what squarespace.com will tell me about the subject.

Best regards,

Hi everyone.

Zxquez Zolohahni: Then you're the only one I mentioned in my other post that I didn't remember to ask permission. Sorry about that. :)

Kelandon: Articles removed. Scenarios and scripts aren't. The law is on my side in this issue, and that means I have the right to have it hosted. You asking to remove the files goes agains't the law and my rights.

Stareye: The issue is the law and, in these boards, the Conde of Conduct. As a moderator you must follow these principles and I'm not breaking any of them, so you have no right (but have the power) to discriminate me. About a full transcription of the PM, I don't know why should they matter to the subject, but to me it's ok if Kelandon posts here the PM's. (One PM mine, three Kel's PMs plus an email).

Morality: I undertand your concern about protecting the work you spend much of your time. But I don't think I'm threatening any of those works. Quite the opposite, I'm giving them exposure. The author's name and his homepage are credited and, everytime it's needed, his works will be updated (although not as fast as he would like, i know). If he was concerned about the reason he gave in the first post, then why did he gave me permission to host his files in the first place?
About you comparing me or my site with the american neo-nazi party is rediculous and even offensive. Not a moderator's supposed behaviour.

To those who, apparently, didn't bother the read well the laws involved, I just say the laws are on my side. You can contact my host at your leisure, I'm not worried about.

Have a nice week, and untill next weekend, as I'll be away. I'll return here to see if the PMs are posted and without changes. ;)

I will address this subject just one more time.

I don't want enter in unpleasant details, and honestly this subject isn't worthy my time discussing it. But in consideration for those who don't know what's going on and really want to know, I'll clarify some points asked here. I think answering *i's post will cover all you need to know.

About point 2, here's what Kelandon wrote:

quote:
I find your site annoying, useless, and self-absorbed. In light of that, I must ask that you remove everything by me from your site, including articles, scripts, scenarios, and whatever else you may have.
Add to that other public affirmations made by him, and you'll know what I mean.

About point 3:

I didn't want to sound arrogant, but since some people have been arrgant them selves to me, I guess I was influenced by them in my words. Anyway, I really think it's not worthy to "wash the dirty laundry" in public. Besides, Kelandon is an older and more active member in this forum, so it's natural that most people will take his side if they ignore the facts. But even so, I don't think it's worth it, because it doesn't address the main issue: can those works be hosted in BoAC? Yes they can, as shown in point 4.

Point 4:

quote:
That's great you quote things and are using the letter of the law to defend your mean spirited and malicious behavior.
It's true that the fact that a mean spirited person acts agains't me, doesn't give me the right to act in the same way. But since legal issues were raised here, I had to clarify them.

quote:
ou continue with your pompous comments in [4c] by being even more insulting with a little smiley. Your mock about "I'm not telling you" is VERY rude and disrespectful.
It's not a mock. If you read carefully, Kelandon said his motives are that he can't have direct control on his works for editing, namely the scenarios and scripts. Articles are not scenarios nor scripts, nor need editing. That's why I said that the reasons were not the one he gave in the first post. Is this clear now?

About point 5:

quote:
Your claim in [5]. I don't know you, I don't trust you. Where is your e-mail/other electronic communication evidence to the contrary?
It's very easy. Just ask the authors. Ask even Kelandon.

About points 6 and 7, I think what is to be explained was explained. The remaining, isn't worth our time, as they don't concern the main issue here.

Finally, I ask you to restore my signature, as I didn't broke any laws and neither the forum rules. Please, don't abuse your moderator powers. I understand Kelandon is your friend and you know him much better than me, but in this forum you're the moderator, not only *I, so do the right thing.

Kelandon: You only have the right to ask me to remove your articles. Ask me that, and I'll remove them.

Best regards,
Overwhelming

EDIT: I only read your last two posts after posting this. Since it's almost 3 am here, i'll read them tomorrow (if my valentine won't mind ;) ) and answer with a fresher mind. Good night.
