Everyone in my party with a space open for it usually picks up at least Sickness Prone. It's pretty harmless, and the extra bonus is nice. Brittle Bones can work well for a spellcaster - if they're the sort where odds are they'll die if they're hit anyway, there's no real setback.

Sluggish hurts. You go last (or close to it) in combat, and lose an action point. I've never experimented with Cursed at Birth or Completely Inept, but they both sound considerably worse.

I rather like the hintbook. It's something tangible I can put up on a shelf, along with other game manuals and boxes. It provided easy answers to some questions I had, and saved me from having to dig through unfamiliar script files for the answers I wanted.

Also, it's a reasonable excuse to give Jeff more money, and lord knows he deserves it.

1. Check the walls just west of the lizard pen for a passage leading to the wheel.

2. You can get the opal without trading for the scroll - Morog's advice has no impact on the visibility of that dungeon. Giving Khoth more than one of the items he wants results in additional gifts from him.

You can find the Melora Opal without Morog's help. Just go straight east from the castle, and look for a passage marked by totems leading south.

The Poppy Shroom charm will save you a lot of time, but you'll then need to find another big treasure (the opal will do,) in order to complete the run, unless you've got an incredibly powerful party.

Archery in Blades of Avernum

Definitely grab at least a little bit of archery even if you don't want a whole lot. In later scenarios you begin to run into magic-resistant spellcasters, and short of an exceptionally powerful Cloud of Blades, arrows are the best way to take these enemies out without first carving through their army of melee friends while being blasted with spells.

It becomes available for regular traning after you've helped yourself to a reasonable sum of Intelligence and Nature Lore. I believe there is also a trainer at the beginning of ZKR that will sell you some.

Generally speaking, I'd guess that Safe Travel made things too easy. Lava, swamps and the like are all useful tools designers can use to control a party's progress through an area, and the presence of such a simple means to avoid these obstacles would have reduced the use of including them.

The Pathfinding Skill is a fair alternative - you can still avoid dangerous terrain, but the skill points you'll need to invest in that talent are far more valuable than a few spell points.

They're in the northeast corner of the caverns, in a room with many small-mushroom tiles, you get them on a tile that has the larger mushroom variety. From the portal, if you climb the west wall, and then skim the north wall, you can find a secret passage to the room that lets you dodge the Demon.

There are at least a few invulnerability potions hidden through the run. Have a warrior chug one of those, give him a high-level blessing, and he should be able to take on just about anything, while his enchantment lasts.

ZKR: Password? in Blades of Avernum

The password is written on an obelisk in the dark maze next to the Unicorn Gate. It's near the north end of the maze, (in a secret passage, so check the walls) so if you can pass through the gate, do so first, and take the north entrance, to save yourself time.

The Bronze Key is in the main Libraries.

You'll need to be able to open the green energy gates. If you can't, there's someone in another exit from the Library level (the part you can access without opening those gates) that can tell you how to, in addition to a host of other useful information.
