I always think that the characters are either complete idiots, or unrealistically and impossibly brillant. Oh well. Are these "impossibly brilliant" characters in mysteries any more unrealistic than the musclebound he-men that inhabit so many fantasy novels? I think not.

Few people reading either mystery or fantasy novels are looking for realism in the stories. Fantasy readers delight in the manner in which some novels break the boundaries of reality and describe wondrous lands, creatures and adventures wholly impossible in the real world. In much the same way, mystery readers live for the ways in which many writers let their imaginations and intellects run free, breaking the boundaries of realism in the interests of constructing puzzles of fantastic complexity and depth. And no puzzle is much fun without an ingenious solution, thus the need for the frighteningly and impossibly intelligent detective. The shame involved in being outsmarted by a little Belgian with oiled moustaches is also a fine incentive to improve one's mind.

You have a point; perhaps "attractive" isn't the best word to use when describing Avril. She is probably more "pretty" than "attractive." Actually, perhaps more "cute" than anything else.

Not listening to anything at the moment.

You are not alone, Riibu.

And I'm currently listening to "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" by the Beatles. No other song deserves the adjective "badass" more than this one.

Oh, I'm sure the movie will be unspeakably horrible. I'll still be up for seeing it, though, as long as Avril herself is in it. I have no love for the music, but I find her to be quite attractive, even though she looks like a fifteen-year old. Ah well, it's still better than wanting to nail a real fifteen-year old.

ARGH, I just accidentally deleted a rather long post. I suppose there's nothing for it but to retype a shorter version.

The number of avid readers we seem to have around here is rather impressive. I myself am not much of a reader nowadays, but I was once a powerhouse, before school took a lot of the fun out of it for me.

Of the serial novels that I have read, my favorites include Redwall (Good man, Slith), The Chronicles of Narnia, Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot mysteries, and, in my early years, the Oz and Dr. Dolittle series. My favorite stand-alone novels include Killer Angels, Watership Down, The Wind in the Willows, The Little Prince, A Tale of Two Cities, and A Separate Peace.

I've never been able to get into stream-of-consciousness novels, or novels with very odd changes of points of view. Thus, The Sound and The Fury, Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, Wide Sargasso Sea, and To the Lighthouse are among my least favorite of the books I've been forced to read.

In terms of the Classics, I've found that, while some appeal to me, the vast majority strike me as being rather overrated or entirely worthless. Although some novels carrying the "Classic" seal are among my favorites (such as the aforementioned A Tale of Two Cities), many others have drawn from me a far less appreciative response. These include Pride and Prejudice and The Scarlet Letter, among others.

Keep 'em coming, folks. It's good to see that books haven't been entirely displaced in modern times by TV, movies, and video games.

Yes, it is highly impressive, especially considering that most of these posts are about a line long. And, personally, I find this discussion, brainless as it is, to be far more entertaining than any of our RP's...

And I'm listening to "Doin' Time," by Sublime. Followed by "Every Morning" by Sugar Ray.

Well, I'm not certain that they were. All I'm going on here is some secondary information. I'm pretty sure I read an old post at some point that said that when Misc was closed, many of the later discussions there were transferred to General. But you have firsthand knowledge, so you're probably right.

Of those of you that read, what do you read? What genres or authors do you prefer, and why do you believe you prefer them? Feel free to delve as deeply as you wish into your psyches to answer this one.

In another vein, what are your opinions on Classic novels? Are they deserving of their vaunted status, or do you find many of them to be overrated, outdated, or just plain lousy?

I'll post my opinions at a later point; I'm far too tired at the moment .

The entire point of having the "Magic Shaping" division of creations is to distinguish magic-using creations from simple "straight-damage" creations. Giving Battle Shaping creations the power to cast spells would effectively remove the division between creations like, say, clawbugs and glaahks. Also, Rothgroths already have an acid attack; it's part of their standard melee attack. I do agree, though, that the player should be able to set a default attack form for those creations that have both a melee and a missile attack.

Your point about the energy for Battle and Fire Shaping creations is a good one. I would suggest that this problem be remedied in GF3 not by granting these creations spells to use up their energy, but by providing all Fire and Battle Shaping creations with a fast-recharging "Shielding Energy" bar which would take all the damage in battle for the creation until exhausted, at which time damage would begin to be subtracted from HP. Shielding energy would recharge partially between rounds of combat. Perhaps this innovation would even things out for Battle and Fire Shaping creations and reduce the near-complete dominance Magic Shaping holds in GF2.

As for the mercenaries idea, it could work. Being able to hire powerful human warriors or mages, or perhaps even Shapers, would be very interesting indeed. However, I think the "percentage of gold" thing would be rather hard to implement. A flat cost to purchase the services of a given mercenary would make things simpler.

The attack ferrets are just a little joke of mine. For the last two and a half years or so, I've been volunteering a few days a week at the Greater Chicago Ferret Association shelter in Lyons, Illinois. It's a fantastic no-kill shelter just for ferrets, and there are usually around 100 ferrets in the shelter at any given time, although the turnover is quite high. Although most ferrets are affectionate and sweet, and rarely bite unless provoked, there are a few that, for whatever reason, bite people who try to handle them without provocation. I got the term "attack ferret" from a sign that was placed on the cage of a group of ferrets with biting tendencies. The sign read, "Beware of Attack Ferrets." I found this to be intensely amusing.

I read through several of the older discussions, although even the oldest discussion left on General didn't actually go back all that far. It seems that many of the old discussions have been deleted so as not to overload the board. I didn't read all of the old discussions, or even anywhere close to all of them, but I picked and chose the ones that sounded the most intriguing. I paid special attention to some of the flame war discussions, as I figured that many of the unique dynamics between people here could be be better understood from reading through these. To this end, I singled out topics that seemed to have incendiary titles, as well as topics that had been locked, as I figured that many had been locked for flaming. As for the Misc board, I've never been on it, and know absolutely nothing about it besides the secondary information I have gleaned from the discussions I've read. If I remember correctly, though, many of the Misc discussions were transferred to General when Misc was eliminated, so I very well might have read some of them.

I've also had conversations recently with some of the oldbies here, and have learned even more about the history of this place.

As of yet, I believe that no one has said anything inappropriate in this discussion. While the topic of cracks has been discussed, no one has crossed the line here and actually requested or supplied anything. There's no need to be an alarmist in this situation, RC. I think that most of us are aware of the rules and are taking care to abide by them.
