Not unless your TV has rocks in it and only fleeting images. Actually, based on "fleeting," I'm going to guess that it's an oscilloscope. I'm not sure what the rocks are, but they're probably important. —Alorael, who believes any riddle can be made into a difficult riddle through the judicious application of stretched metaphors and insanity. Magic seems to have limits in the world of Avernum, and cross-breeding hasn't been seen yet. It's also a process that's remarkably difficult to rationalize. Energy/matter is conserved except when magic intervenes. Every force exerted on an object results in an equal and opposite force exerted by the object except presumably magical forces, which don't have an object to be acted on. Incompatible species cannot breed except when magic starts altering genes so they are functionally the same but somehow compatible between very different organisms? —Alorael, who can conceive of Dorikas being part of a good plot. He can also conceive of Rentar-Ihrno's return to the surface ending being the one used in A5 so that it is exactly the same as A3. Who knows? I've found that the investment required to get Magical Efficiency up to a level that produces noticeable effects would be more efficiently spent on Intelligence for more energy, First Aid for more energy recovery, or other skills. I had no magical efficiency and blasted through everything, yet I still played through A4 without ever drinking a single potion. 100 Magical Efficiency is just not possible without cheating. —Alorael, who will admit that he is also energy conscious. It's amazing how far a few Bolts of Fire will take you and how much less they cost than lobbing Fireblasts around. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Spellcraft and Magery are functionally identical. Raise whichever costs fewer skill points (so you'll eventually raise both). They increase the bonus in the formula for spell effects. Magical Efficiency doesn't improve your spells, but it has a chance of reducing the amount of energy you expend by casting them. Since this is a random chance and not very likely even for significant amounts of Magical Efficiency, it's generally considered a nearly worthless skill. I wouldn't bother putting points in it. —Alorael, who can also add that all skills affect mage spells and priest spells identically except for the obvious pair of skills dedicated solely to one or the other. The simple answer is yes. Register and all sorts of doors and barriers open to you. The longer answer is that the barriers actually come down at the end of the demo. Unfortunately, you can't get to the barriers. Fortunately, the editor can return you to Fort Ganrick so you can explore a short way past the barriers. There's not much to do before you register, but there's some entertainment value. —Alorael, who can only say that Solberg's time is too valuable to waste on soldiers. Royalty is an entirely different story. Clearance is everything. quote:Right, and that's what makes "nephil heritage" a strange choice of words if Randolph is pure nephar. That would be like saying nephils have nephil heritage. It's true, but it's so obvious you wouldn't bother saying it like that. —Alorael, who is sure a First Expedition scenario could be worked out if necessary. The BoE scenario Truffle Days involves a survivor, in fact. Still, that kind of survival oriented game seems more suited to a scenario than a full game, or the game would end up being very unlike other Avernums. Experience is divided equally among all living members of your party. Dead members don't count. Experience bonuses and penalties apply to each PC's experience portion separately. Note that experience gained from a kill is reduced as your party's level increases. I can't remember if it's based on the average or the highest level, but it has a significant effect. A level 1 PC could kill a goblin for 8 experience and a party of four level 1 PCs could kill it for 2 experience each. After killing thousands of goblins, though, the single character would have a higher level than any of the PCs in the four person party but the four would have a higher combined experience total than the singleton. You get experience for disarming traps, I believe, but not for picking locks. —Alorael, who recommends piling on those penalties and avoiding experience bonuses. Your story is not like Saunders' story, which should be made available for all to read on Aran's site like it is here. —Alorael, who considers it both a work of art and a necessary piece of evidence that should not be withheld. If you mean a small door north of the nephil fort, head back to Fort Ganrick and there should be an attack by the nephils. When you kill the attackers one of them will be holding a scroll with the password. There's another door that requires a password that's closer to sliths, but I'm pretty sure it's not in the demo. —Alorael, who hopes he's thinking of the door you mean.
