Since there's a busy thread on Avernum 5 stuff, I thought I'd say what's on my mind. Kelandon found one of my older posts about Avernum 5 and put it in that thread, and everything I said there still holds. I've figured out a bunch of stuff I want to do, and I'll be posting more about it as time passes. A bunch of things people mentioned in this thread will be happening. Though I still feel no need for a major revamp of the engine. I am planning to add several heavily requested things. Keyboard shortcuts for as much as I can. Elevations. Candles and lamps making more light. I will be bringing into Avernum 4 many of the successful system changes of Geneforge 4 (like the new encumbrance and action point systems, both of which I am very happy with). There will be a much more satisfying plot (or, at least, satisfying to me). I will do what I did with Geneforge 4 and spend several days just staring at blank sheets of paper and doing plotting. It'll all be in the underworld, some in a certain part of Avernum, most in a new area. And your characters' background will be completely different from in every Avernum game. I'm actually starting to look forward to writing it. I'm coming up with a lot of neat ideas. It'll probably be started in 5-6 months, after the Nethergate 2.0 thing is under control. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

If you are posting about this based on your experience as a beta tester, bear in mind that I gave the shock trooper much higher starting stats only a little bit before the game shipped. I am interested to hear what happened for people who weren't in beta. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

It appears that the problem happens when there is a second monitor on the system which is set to millions of colors. This should be fixed in the next update (probably out in 2-3 weeks). In the meantime, a workaround is to set the second monitor to thousands of colors before playing. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

It was a tough choice to make OS X required, but using the old, outdated system calls to maintain the compatability was starting to hurt the game. So, in the end, I didn't have a choice. :-( - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

The steps below should solve the problem, which drives me nuts. "Unable to open sound channels" Error If you get the error "Unable to open sound channels" when you launch the game, carry out these steps to fix the problem: i. Open the Applications folder. ii. Open the Utilities folder. iii. In this folder, run "Audio MIDI Setup" iv. Under Audio Output, change the Format to 44100.0 Hz. This should correct the problem. -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

I just released, officially, for real, Avernum 4 v1.1 for Macintosh. This new version has much better resolution switching and is Universal. (So it will run natively on Intel Macintoshes.) - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Thanks ... I was very pleased by the mention. "And while I certainly think G4 is a far better game for 2006" I'd agree with you. I am prouder of G4 than Av4. But since these articles have to be written months in advance ... - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

It's NOT based on highest level character. Each character gets experience based in its level. Probably the high level character has lots of disadvantages and the others have advantages. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

It's just there to look nice. As one poster said, it's pretty hard to do anything with the game system to do with lighting that isn't just tedious. Applying to-hit penalties doesn't increase fun. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Geneforge 4 uses its own font system, so dickering with the system fonts won't help. Also, I wouldn't reinstall the operating system just yet. Write me at spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com. If you could send me a screenshot of the messed up text, it would be a huge help. Maybe I can play with it and see if I can fix the problem. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Benafits from any given creation making stat slow down at 10. They don't stop. I'm going to change this for future versions, though, so that every level of shaping skill gives a level of creation. It shouldn't work like it does now. That being said, in my own playing of the game, I found that putting points into Shaping skills made for considerably more powerful creations. Plus characters skilled in Shaping get an essence bonus. I think that saying Shapers are neutered is really overstating the case. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

On my Intel Mac running 10.4.8, all of those games run just fine under Rosetta except Blades of Avernum, which is a bit pokey. I'm undecided about what to do yet. I need to find out how many people have problems and if Apple makes anything better in their next OS update. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

I have put together a public beta of the new version of Avernum 4 for Macintosh. It is now Universal, and it should do a much better job of switching resolutions on widescreen monitors. It requires OS X 10.1. ftp://ftp.spiderwebsoftware.com/temp/Avernum4.demo.v11.dmg Feel free to try it out. If you have any problems, please drop me a note at spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com. It seems solid, but we'll be giving it a bit more testing before it becomes the official release. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

You can't get in there. There is actually something in there. There was originally an encounter with an eyebeast in the room south of the Unbound. But it ended up not working. Instead of deleting the eyebeast, I just moved it in there, forever trapped. :-) - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

What sort of Mac are you using, with what version of the operating system? (When trying to get help, this is always very good information to give.) Geneforge 4: Rebellion requires OS X. If you have OS X, it should be able to handle .dmg files no problem. Just double click on it and you'll see the installer. I am no longer using Stuffit because it doesn't work well anymore on new machines. Apple has declared that all must use .dmg files, and fighting them is unwise. :-) - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

The policy only actually became official yesterday. There was a bit of agonizing on my part about how long the refund period would be. I eventually settled on a year, instead of three years. Though, honestly, if someone comes to me pissed off about a game they ordered 13 months ago, I would very likely give them their money back. I'm not really worried about fraud. In the over ten years we've been running our business, I could count on my fingers the number of refund requests I've gotten that weren't related to a stolen credit card. Our customers are good people. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

I'm actually not sure what the big change in Shaping is. :-) There are many small changes. The most relevant, I thnk, is that the minimum skills needed to make creations has been drastically lowered. This makes is much, much easier for even Weak Shaping classes to have relevant creations late in the game. Don't worry. Classes with Strong Shaping will be able to make much more powerful creations. But I want Shaping to stay relevant for everyone. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

I have come to believe that the creative process is a highly individual and quirky thing. While I would be surprised to hear of a writer who didn't read anything at all, the idea of a genre writer who doesn't read that genre doesn't even make the surprise meter move even a little. - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

The main action point change is that you can now attack when you have any action points left. This makes combat far more different that you might think at first. Pods, spores and crystals are now much more useful. However, the enemy much more frequently gets a shot at you. It's taken a bit of rebalancing, but I'm really happy with the change. The character type I left out was strong shaping, medium magic, weak combat. I liked it least of the six possibilities. I thought it was overpowered, too one-dimensional (a wispy little thing who puts tons of skill points into intelligence, and then you die if something looks at you) and least adaptable to different styles of play. At any rate, it's too late to debate it. Even if I'd ever had time to get the graphics for a sixth character type (I didn't). - Jeff Vogel -------------------- Official Board Admin spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com Posts: 960 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |
