Have a look here. Geneforge 3 and Geneforge 4 are mentioned, though a lot lower than I would have expected.

Excerpts:

53. Geneforge 3 - This game is great. It's epic and nostalgic. Craving a non Japanese non Diablo RPG fix? This is the goods right here.
- Mike Kasprzak

82. Geneforge 4: Rebellion

It's really cliche, but they don't make RPGs like this anymore in the retail PC gaming world.
- Brian Clair

These games are old style. And I like them that way.
Plus, these games can pack hours of entertainment.

Unless your ET.

Also, they are turn based (in combat). So that is great if you need a break from real time action.

Oh, and G4 had to be one of the best games Spiderweb Software made. A2 is in the same place.

Edit -As a comment on Japanese RPGs, I find it interesting on how the Japanese (in many games) give their characters revealing clothing. Especially the females.

G3 didn't place too badly, all things considered. G4 placed surprisingly low, but it didn't score much lower.

I think they're saying that the phrase "they don't make games like this any more" is clichéd, not that Geneforge is.

I'm always a bit surprised at harsh criticism (heck, any criticism involving graphics) towards Spiderweb's games. Personally, I just don't understand what the deal is with the graphics! They add a nice touch to the games and give it a nice, retro-y feel. The current graphics (A4 and GF4) are excellent, wonderful, and pretty in my opinion. Perhaps I just haven't experienced "Hard Core RPG's" but I'm guessing they don't have moral dilemmas, a deep and involved story, or any of the other things that make me love games created by Spiderweb Software.

Or perhaps I'm just the harsh critic! :P

How can G3 and G4 be there and not have G1 there? G1 was by far the best of the four.

Actually, I completely don't mind most of the time when they look good (note that I am a 13 year old male).

Edit -However, I have noticed that in Final Fantasy X-2, Rikku looks good no matter what dressphere she is in. Well, at least for the ones I have seen her in. (I have seen her in white mage, and warrior. Though I haven't gotten a clear look at the other ones).

It only includes the games released in the past 36 months. G1 may be great, but it's too old to make that list.

Ah, I guess I should have read the list before posting, but I felt that a list that rated G3 over G1 would not be worth it.

I don't agree with the lists and think G3 and G4 should be higher up, but people (a.k.a. americans) don't like moral dilemmas they have enough of them through their entire lives.

That list doesn't look to be worth much. It's the top 100 of 368 games reviewed in the last three years, most of the games at the top look fairly dumb, and the aclaimed Darwinia is ranked 60th.
And just looking through the authors, who you're rated by and the kind of games they like seems to have a profound impact on your placement in the list.

Theres a starman waiting in the sky
Hed like to come and meet us
But he thinks hed blow our minds
Theres a starman waiting in the sky
Hes told us not to blow it
Cause he knows its all worthwhile
He told me:
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie

The game of life is hard to play

I'm gonna lose it anyway

The losing card I'll someday lay

so this is all I have to say.

Sometimes the old play things are the best!

Hand painted ball in a cup!

Barring that geneforge 1 is an ageless classic that changed my perspective on what original meant. Instead of taking an already used idea, and recycling it or adding some gimmick to it, it took a complete fresh concept and constructed what i consider to be one of the greatest fantasy rpg's to grace the internet. And nothing anyone says can change my opinion of it.

I find it interesting, too. It's a tawdry gimmick that I would not complain about if Jeff were to utilize it.

Start a new game in any recent Avernum. Check out "Cordelia's" dress slit!

Gotta thank Phil Foglio for that, I'd guess. After all, he did pen XXXenophile...

Agreed. I could understand it if it was only half-way up to allow faster movment. But sadly that dress is a dead loss. The standard graphic dress for the female elf mage in Baldures gate is even worse.

Yeah, I was a little surprised to see that in a Spiderweb game. No wonder Oliver (A4) said what he did about Avernite women...

That's because they are based on TSR (currently a division of Hasbro) books. Look at almost any cover of The Dragon with a female on it and see how sexist they are.

TSR certainly didn't help anything -- and neither did WotC for that matter -- but I think it's the gaming community as a whole that is sexist. It's a very different kind of sexism from what we have in business or politics, one that comes more from confusion and awkwardness than domination or hatred; but it's no less ugly in expression.
