I've just got back from a weekend away in Manchester, having had an amazing time, eating good food, and seeing good bands.

But, by far the best thing I saw was last night (Sunday 3rd), whilst ordering my Jack and coke from the bar:

Next time you're in England, Tyran, I'll buy you a pint. :)

Anybody else with Spiderweb-related things in their town/city/cave?

Apparently the ale company was created before Nethergate.

Indeed. The brewery is the same age that I am.

We have student named Esther at our school... I think that's it for me up here in Northern Alberta. No one plays any Spidweb stuff whatsoever... so I'm pretty well alone up here.

All the people I know have never heard of Spiderweb Software.

Esther, that isn't strange...I've met someone named Ishmael.

One of my friends discovered the joys of Avernum without my having played any role in it, and I've only recently found out. It made me very happy.

—Alorael, who is really quite impressed. The last time he googled Nethergate the brewery came up first, second, and third, with Spiderweb's game trailing. How things have changed!

Esther is not an uncommon name here, and I don't even think it's exclusively Jewish.

It took Dikiyoba ages to figure out which Spiderweb character was named Esther. It's the default Agent name, isn't it?

Edit: Typo.

Wasn't one of the lesbians in A1 named Esther?

They are "very good friends," and that's why the were exiled. They have rainbow symbols in A3 along with a few other Avernites. They're permanently paired in the series.

Yes, they are lesbians.

—Alorael, who would like to know what you made of the two of them that wasn't lesbians. The Empire doesn't like friendship? (Okay, it probably doesn't, but it also kicks puppies.)

Nancy and Elspeth hinted at their special relationship that was frowned on by the Empire so they were sent into Exile (Avernum). Jeff doesn't come out and explicitly say it, but it's fairly clear through the first 3 games.

I never asked anyone why they were exiled, apparently Avernites don't like recalling those memories.

They aren't quite permanently paired. Or at least, A4 has a character named Elspeth in rebuilt Cotra (her old home), but no Nance. And no relevant dialogue either. It's unclear if it's the same Elspeth, but it would be quite a coincidence otherwise. I found that particular point quite disappointing.

Where are they in E/A2? Wasn't their city attacked by the Empire? I alway mix up Silvar and Cotra, even in Upper Avernum.

E1: Cotra.
E2: One in Silvar, one in -- I think -- Formello? They were split up when Cotra was attacked.
E3: New Cotra (in Upper Exile).
A4: Somebody named Elspeth is in rebuilt Cotra.

It was Elspeth in Silvar. Dikiyoba thinks Nance was in Fort Dranlon. She definitely wasn't in Formello. (In A2, at least.)

Nance was either in Fort Dranlon or Fort Draco.

The reappearance of minor characters is an interesting concept. Besides Nance there are individuals such as Carol and the man who greets arrivals in A1. I've always wondered why Jeff keeps them around.

I like the small stories of minor Avernites a lot, and one of my complaints in A4 was that the characters reappeared without having their lives advanced for the most part. But look at Carol and Tor: they start out living separately. After Fort Avernum shuts down they get hitched and start a farm together. Eventually they separate again because Tor is a persistent quartermaster/pawn for the crown and Carol wants a life of her own.

—Alorael, who maintains as always that the beauty of Avernum isn't in the big stories. It's in the background, and the background very much includes the little people.
