which one of theese skills is best :

melle weapons
pole weapons
bows

i have a thief with high dexterity. i know that damage with the bow depends on dexterity ( but does it depend on the str too ). do i need str at all for that character ?
also does the pole weapons use str or dex ? or both ?
please help.

Which game is this?

Personally I would agree with you on bows - I find them much better than other weapons because they're ranged. Throwing weapons - Geneforge put them me off them...
You don't really need too much strength for a thief but you should get a few levels now and then.

You probably should have posted this in the Avernum Forum, because presumably you are asking about Avernum.

This forum is for posting non-game specific messages.

Bows are generally considered to be superior in Avernum (especially the most recent).

thanks for all the replies. yes i'm talking about avernum.

so str is only usefull to a thief if you want to change the amount of stuff he can carry ?
are you sure that str doesn't influence the damage done with the bow ?

by the way sorry for posting here, i didn't notice...

Strength doesn't change the damage the bows do in Avernum 3 which is the only one I have right now but I seem to remember it being the same in the other Avernums.

Thrown weapons are pretty worthless in all Avernum games. Bows just don't do enough damage in any game before A4. Swords and poles are a matter of choice: swords let you use shields but do slightly less damage, while spears are hard-hitting but two-handed. You usually find good magic swords earlier and more often, but the best weapon is most often a spear.

—Alorael, who can say for certain that melee and pole require Strength. He's pretty sure throwing does too, and he's not sure about bows. Whether you're playing A1-A3 or A4 makes a big difference.

Swords are your best friends in the end(unless that's where you're being stabbed with one). They're better than beating people with sticks and have the most variety. Also, a thief with a spear just lacks flavor

Anyway, how exactly are you a "thief" in Avernum?

But it was acceptable for Ceylon since it was correct advice that the original poster didn't know. You calling attention to it, however, is far less appreciated.

A character with high tool use for opening doors and disarming traps can be considered a thief.

Presumably, a thief also takes everything valuable that's not nailed down as well. :P

Like me for example, having a thief.

Also, it did look like minimoding to me...sorry. I do, however, learn from my mistakes.

My thief (nephil) used bow/arrow. He is not very strong...and has a weak melee attack.

I'm not even sure where the term minimodding came from or why it has such sudden prominence here. I liked Spiderweb better without it.

—Alorael, who still thinks actions speak louder than words. And, of course, mods are the only ones who can take action. So ha!

The way I say it, minimodding is merely a lie made by the fascists to give the little people the artificial feeling of importance. Having said that... Volkswagenhagen!

But that, my good sir, is a CoC violation. And I daresay you've got a few high energy orbitals occupied.

—Alorael, who is sure there is a more clever way to warp that pun. In fact, it's probably been so warped many times.

Thrown weapons are a holdover from Exile, where they required less action points to use than bows. When hasted, this meant an extra attack per round,

Exile was the first ever game that Jeff made. So, a long time ago. In fact, Avernum is a remake of the four Exile games. However Avernum IV was a totally new game.

You just failed to answer a simple question. Exile was released in 1994.

—Alorael, who can still remember the first time he stepped out of the portal and met a man standing in front of it. "Hello! Name? Job?"

That was me fixing the typo (in bold).

Anyway, people used to call me a minimod when I, well, minimoded. I don't like the term.

Pirates leave everything that's either nailed down or on fire. Real thieves do not. =^.^=

Incidentally, maybe there should be a scenario that gave a few breaks to ranged weapon and spell-users - lots of counters and tables strewn around some rooms that you'd have to work around, instead of emphasizing making your meatshield Superman...hmm...

Besides having a bow, a thief should carry a sword also, as you can occasionally strike a fleeing monster.
