I own the Avernums.
I don't own the Exiles.
I am of Dutch descent.
'Nuff said.

Exile was good when it was just Exile, but Avernum is totally awesome. 3-D graphics beat 2-D anytime, Avernum doesn't have nearly as many useless spells, it's easier to have a conversation in Avernum, the interface is better in Avernum, and Exile is just plain old.

Exile's spells were better than Geneforge's.

Exile's dialogue was much more natural than Avernum's or Geneforge's

How...by saying one word phrases?

At least in Avernum/Geneforge, a special topic wouldn't come up unless someone actually went through some effort to get the info (ie. The Scimitar. In Exile, you could just say 'Icarus' and the other members outside the main base would think that you were one of them. In Avernum, you had to actually perform the mission before they tell you the password)!

I would say more, but I'm not gonna get in a pissing match about which game is better.

Can we all agree that each game had it's pluses and negatives?

My view is Exile > Geneforge > Avernum ... and now we're winning in the poll too ...

Geneforge's spells counted along with it's creations. Any creations > Any spells, in terms of raw interest.

But wait! What about parties?

Nethergate>Exile>Avernum>Geneforge.

—Alorael, who never quite adjusted to a party of one even when it was one in the company of seven others. Four party members plus one hanger-on plus baggage is a real party.

You are?

And I'm an Avernum freak. Sure, I played the Exiles, but that's mostly because the registration barrier allowed for more adventuring than in Avernum.

Three of my grandparents are/were from Groningen (one was part German), and one was from Friesland. If that counts. ;)

But it doesn't affect me that much, other than being a convenient excuse for being frugal. ;)

I actually didn't like either too much until A4 (which I loved)due to the stupid use the keyboard to move instead of the mouse. A4 took a few pointers from GF and It worked out quite well. Ironically Exile 3 is what brought me to this site in the first place, but then that was a long time ago.

I'm not gonna vote. I'm partial to Avernum, but that's because I haven't played the others.

Can't we agree to disagree? I mean, it's opinion anyway.

I'm new to all this so which is the Oldest to Newest game?
How do they differ?
Are they set in the same world?
What's the difference between Avernum and Blades of Avernum?
Is there crafting in any of these games like certain MORPGs out there?

Exile, Nethergate, Avernum, Geneforge

Download a few demos and find out.

Avernum is a remake of Exile, but other than that all the games are very different.

Exile/Avernum are full-length games. Blades of Exile and Blades of Avernum allow you to make your own scenarios, so it's like a bunch of shorter games.

G2, G3, A4, and G4 have a crafting system of sorts.

Dikiyoba.

Edit: Fixed quote.

I tend to think I prefer Exile, but I haven't played Avernum enough to tell. My reasons? The aforementioned fixed skill costs and greater spell selection, as well as being able to create six party members instead of just four. And there's the part where I own the Exile Trilogy CD (from back when there wasn't really anything else Spiderweb made) and Avernum...not so much.
