This is getting ridiculous.

Perhaps I haven't been here long enough to have the proper context for all of this. But this certainly goes beyond Ed and Argh, Bomber and Lord Llama, and (with apologies to Kyrek) I_am_a_Minotaur -- all of whom made people laugh and (with the exception of Ed) were more or less amiable. Lack of understanding of the boards is one thing; putting malice on a pedestal is another.

I'm concerned now because the contagion is spreading. Solberg, who is normally very friendly, pretty much exploded. Dikiyoba lost her patience. Alec stopped flaming (and if that isn't a sign of the apocalypse, I don't know what is). Old members of all colours have been getting pulled into name-calling matches with noobs.

The absurdity and pointlessness of these boards is tolerable really because people are actually friendly and welcoming, so long as you aren't an idiot or a jerk. That friendliness is what is under attack now. When Nalyd proactively attacks ten different people, then publicly declares his disregard for the community, and nothing is done about it, the board community dies a little. Same thing when other noobs act like mods, or scream and whine until other members attack them.

For the sake of the community, everyone really needs to take a step back. Ignore the noobs, and let the mods handle them. This is advice that I need to take as well. (Mods, you can make that easier for everyone by issuing a few warnings!) Don't let the community get dragged into the mud with everything else.

To end on a lighter note, I'd like to remind everyone to hold the eight virtues close to their hearts. Remember, the mantra of eating is "yum".

One I saw this, I at first thought: "wow, Hawkking has actually grown up!"

Then I looked more closely, and saw that it's actually Slarty, making a good point. Yeah, the people here have been acting a little strange lately, I must say, and the amounts of (semi)noobs there suddenly seem to be does startle me. With all due respect, but what has been happening here lately?

Geneforge 4 was released, providing the spike in board activity that we'd all predicted and bringing a fresh wave of members to the community. It just seems that most of these members have yet to "stabilize," for lack of a better and less directly offensive way of saying it. I could swear that in the past, such people "stabilized" a lot quicker, and thus the community's growing pains were minimized. Right now... well, we have to deal with it.

I kinda agree with Slarty, but honestly, I'm getting fed up with some of it, and a few times I have wound up actively restraining myself from exploding in a cloud of profanity. Of course, I've been a bit more stressed in real life as of late, so some of that is probably creeping into my posts.

Strangely enough, I've lost my own negative feelings against newer members (in general, no one specific, mind you), but since I hardly post it doesn't really show. :\ Maybe if I made a few rants against new members, everyone else would remember their friendliness again?

A good way for everybody to improve the atmosphere here (and your personal reputations) is to never post the first thing that comes to your mind when somebody is acting like an idiot:

Write down your angry post, but then close the browser and do something else for ten minutes. Then write down a new version and do the same thing. If you are still tempted to reply after that, make your post as polite as you can, because it's actually going to be a lot more effective than an angry rant. (Unless it's an angry rant by a person who never posted angry rants before. :) )

This would of course be easier if our moderators actually moderated the discussion, giving warnings (and harsher penalties) for flames and spam (particularly Nalyd-style harassment and mini-modding).

I don't consider myself a board "veteran" but I have been in several forums from 10+ members to more then 100,000 and I know how it feels.

I myself am rather fed up of noobs posting on the board things like "PLZ HELP!" and demanding to be spoon-fed info.

Let us experianced ones look down on these poor younglings and offer them our...*grinding metal sound*...respect and *more grinding*...helpful comments.

I dunno, Riibu. Certain unnamed members may take it personally.

I've been following the "if you ignore it, it will go away" and the "lead by example" rules for this particular wave...
That doesn't make certain members any less annoying, of course. Even I have found myself desiring to take a knife or (heaven help me) an AWP to some particular newbies.

Incidentally, I ran into this earlier today. It struck me as ironic.

Stupid is as stupid does. I'm sure everyone posting here is perfectly delightful in real life (perhaps a little young in some cases). However, it doesn't change the fact that everyone is responsible for his or her assertions. Why should moronic posts be tolerated by long-standing members of the boards? How else are we to "learn" them?

Why was TM banned anyway?

I've played his maps and am in the mind that he is either a mad hero or a goverment.

He likes to flame people and post messages that are not child-friendly. I believe the specific incident last time was that Jeff saw him post "lololololololbizarresexualactlolololololololololol" with "bizarresexualact" replaced with a bizarre sexual act and immediately banned him and instructed the admins not to unban him again. Usually the admins tolerate him because he's so useful, but Jeff says no and it's his boards. At any rate, he's still at the Lyceum and Desperance, and he posts here by proxy when he has something sufficiently important and unoffensive enough for someone else to be willing to say it for him (notably, new scenario announcements and beta-test signups).

I am pleased that our two voices of reason have singled out Nalyd as the primary cause of unhappiness, complained about mini-modding, and complained about modding all in the same breath.

I realize there are certain things that are tolerated, and certain things not tolerated by TPTB. It seems what is currently happening is tolerated. That can be the only acceptable situation. Otherwise it would mean that this place has been abandoned by TPTB.

Well, Nalyd is sorry for the mini-modding, and he won't do it again, at least not to that extent. However, do not expect him to change his philosophy concerning communities in general and individuals. He is awful in that respect, and he knows it.

I am fully aware of the irony of complaining about mod's handling of mini-modding. However, this course of action is less disruptive than appealing directly to authorities (which could enganger moderator positions) and more productive than complaining about it in KoL chatroom (which is just a waste of time for all involved).

It seems to me that there is far less moderator presence on these boards than there used to be. I mean it both in terms of general level of forum activity by the moderators (if we had top poster lists 3-5 years ago, most moderators would have been on them; now many mods post less than once a month), and in terms of the amount of spam and flaming tolerated on game boards.

So, perhaps this is the rallying cry for a change in forum software? The finite limit on moderator status is 4 per forum. It is glaringly obvious that the position is a nod to the moderator and their status in the community, without much hope of conviction of authority. Drakefyre has essentially left because of real life contraints, stareye apparently has a huge time commitment there as well, and Vogel doesn't have the time to deal with this place.

Discussion of the failings of moderators really isn't part of the civil discussion that is allowed here, but perhaps if there were more moderators, and current moderators were willing to realize that their absence is harmful to the tenor of the forum, this place would not see the upheavals like it is currently experiencing.

Just a thought, and I come from the opposite end of the continuum as Zeviz. That may demonstrate how awful the situation has become when we agree on the extent of the problem.

Well, part of the problem is that nobody really moderates Tech Support or a couple of other unloved forums.

Another part of the problem is that spammers can spam the heck out of everything (and flamers flame) within a few minutes, but it is unreasonable to expect the moderatorial staff to be present at literally all times, so some of this stuff will just happen and need to get cleaned up in a few hours.

I've always been in favor of smacking around trolls and people who are just plain pricks, but I think that admins are the only ones with enough authority really to do anything. I can lock topics and yell at people, but that's about it. Admins can Can and Ban and such.

We may be due for a couple of week-long bannings as warnings, though. A few members could really use it.

I could always be a mod, I play spiderweb games about 30 hours a week (Yes you did hear that right in whatever context you like) and can be on-line up to 3 hours a day, 5 if no-one else in the family needs it for something.

(Before you ask, yes you may call me a power-hungry guy but please refrain from the nOOb part thank you)

Agreed, week-long Bans need to become more common punishments. Many, Nalyd included, have warranted them and they are relatively harmless to the member overall. Several spammers who would post once and never again would be permanently deterred by them, and members more dedicated to the boards would most always come back reformed.

And Nalyd would graciously accept a Moderator position. . . Not that he'll get one, of course.

I wholeheartedly agree with Nalyd. He has been around long enough to be taken seriously, thus his advice should be taken and he be given a week long ban.

But truth be told...things aren't gonna be the same after today at the Forums. Too many people are fed up with some of the idiocy of some people. (My rant on the other post can be included)

I have noticed mentions of week long bannings. If that is what I have to do to make up for what I did, then I accept my punishment. Thank you for your patience in reading my long posts.
