...wow. I feel nauseous after reading that. Another entry on the list of reasons I don't really like Oprah. If that electricity quote is real, it's pretty damning. In fact, if just about any of those quotes are real and not taken from some sort of incredibly exhonerating context, the book is a load of garbage. I don't like passing judgment on something quite that easily, but there it is. And I've never liked Oprah at all. It's easier to hawk than Donald Trump's secrets to success - start with a rich father and convince other people to give you money to make yourself rich. I didn't even have to waste a day going to his program. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I'll admit that I wish I'd thought of a way to peddle mind over matter to make money, but I'll settle for unnecessary alliteration. —Alorael, who read in the NY Times a while ago that the two parties responsible for the book have begun a bitter dispute over rights, methods, and most importantly who gets the money. Apparently their advice hasn't all worked out perfectly for them. As much as they wish each other dead, they're still around. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

*reads article* ... And this is why I don't place much faith in humanity. This kind of "spirituality" and "Secrets of Success" rather sickens me. If it's so successful and such a "Secret", why are they sharing it with everyone? If this kind of thing can get me a million dollars, why are you selling it for a pittance compared to that kind of money? I'm disappointed with Oprah. And anyone involved in propagating "The Secret". -------------------- -Zephyr Tempest, your personal entertainer Posts: 1779 | Registered: Monday, December 9 2002 08:00 |

I am suddenly reminded of Lemmings, with Oprah leading them right off a cliff. *shakes head sadly* I can see the writer's point about Oprah being idolized. Just look at this Wikipedia article about her. There's hardly a bad thing in about her even mentioned! In fact, this was mentioned under Criticisms and controversies: quote:Everyone has some sort of skeleton in their closet. The only difference is how skilled a person is in hiding it. The thing is, she has millions of people around the globe hiding it with their blind adoration of her, so it's not surprising that it's taken this long for something less pleasant to come to light. Even so, the millions of fans who flock around her like some sort of god will more than likely turn a blind eye to this. By the way, I didn't watch that Leadership* Academy special, so tell me: out of the 152 students about to be enrolled, how many were white? *I was half tempted to replace that 'p' with a 't'. -------------------- I tried to think of something witty to put here. Even ignoring the whole 'positive thoughts attract positive results' aspect, the fact remains that this book has the same target audience of most other self-help books: those already well-off. Let's increase everyone's perception of prosperity so that everyone believes that there's something wrong with their lives! -------------------- A multitude of rulers is not a good thing. That's always been something I don't quite get about the self-help industry... the people who are really far gone, who actually need the help, aren't going to sit down and read a four hundred page book about the power of positive thinking. They're the ones who are going to go to therapy for four years without having a breakthrough, or who will go to rehab and relapse ad nauseum, or who insist that they'll get out of credit card debt by applying for another card. -------------------- Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. The link refuses to open for me. Although for the looks of it I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I can honestly say I've never watched Oprah. I have no idea what time it's on or on what channel is on. I know who Oprah is for all of the references of her on TV, actually. Posts: 1035 | Registered: Friday, April 1 2005 08:00 |

Oprah is a relatively good person, for a celebrity. That leadership school in Africa looks nice. But she's too optimistic and hopeful. Sometimes she even seems naive. -------------------- May the fires of Undeath burn in your soul, and consume it. Posts: 1636 | Registered: Wednesday, January 5 2005 08:00 |

quote:Nobody who is too poor to afford it realizes they are too poor to afford it, because credit cards prey on their socially-enforced irrational consumerism with unrepayable, predatory loans and the education system is too deliberately ineffective to keep them from having their view of the economic world shaped by TV heads and their idiot peers. Go on, blame the victim some more. It's so very easy, and nobody ever calls you on it. quote:Yes, it looks nice, but what the problem with it (as the author of that article wrote - that it's only concerned with how it looks rather than what it does) and what you think the problem with it is (a leadership school? In Africa? For Africans? How naive!) are two entirely different things.
