Bots are computer programs designed to do some task like locating computer sites, copying all the posts to Aran's archives and gather statistics about us, pretend to be a person to open accounts on a forum web site to post advertising, play an online computer game to gather items and/or money (the boring stuff), etc..

The purpose is chosen by the author of the program and depending upon the skill it can mimic a person.

To be honest, I've been wanting to ask that, too. Aren't they "robots" that join a forum and advertise something in their profile? Like making their "Real Name," "Interests," and "Favorite Spiderweb Game" be www dot buyourstuff dot com?

Edit: "Dots" added so it wouldn't actually be a stupid link.

Edit 2: And beaten! At least I was about right.

Thuryl is probably wise not to trust the Iffybot.

Bots? Pfff. Most of us here could do far more evil than some lame program.

Bots include more sophisticated programs that mimic a person's online presence. Aran is known for producing bots that perform a wide variety of tasks.

—Alorael, who is among those bots, maybe. Or maybe not. And Aran is maybe (or maybe not) a bot too.

For example imagine an online shooting game in which where you shoot people then gain bonuses when you have killed a lot of virtual players.
You want high scores to obtain better bonuses well you invent a bot which will be hard to kill and will not miss his shoot.
Bots are programs and can't reply to players.
If a player survive all the time critical shoots usually kills every one it sees and doesn't reply then this player is a bot.
To make a bot is not simple because you have to hack into the game.
Usually good informations gone rogue called hackers do this sort of thing.

Without verifying it at Wikipedia, I'd say the original "bots" generated messages in IRC channels (though Usenet could have beaten it there). They greet people, enforce registered nicks, and can even reply to requests, like an encyclopedia.

Bot is a blanket term that covers both programs that act and those that only gather information, but the latter are more commonly known as "spiders".

In games, bots can either be computer-generated opponents (NPCs) or programs written by enterprising players who don't want to waste hours on tedious grinding. Most administrators don't look kindly on them.

(I was going to have EndeavorBot post this, but then I realized it would have taken far too long and could have just as well been done by me logging into to his account, so it didn't make a difference anyway.)

Taken in order, that almost seems like an admission that Hawk King is IFM. This doesn't seem like the best fit, but Muffin does seem like a candidite for a side account of another member.

I thought it was already established that Muffin is not Ed.

I thought Infernal Flamming Muffin's brother vouched for him the first day he posted. The guy was too non-noobish to be Ed or friend of Ed.

Vouched? I think it went more along the lines of:

I can't believe my parents let him join a forum.
Anyway, I think I'm going to stop posting for a while, too. It's using time that could be better spent working on Veritas.

Muffin's brother has an account on these boards, DanielJacksonMPC I think. DanielJacksonMPC displayed a level of skill and experience with forums, with Spiderweb games, and verbal skills which surpassed both Ed and Muffin. Ed also consistently had an IP located in England.

The only evidence that Muffin is Ed is that Muffin sort of acts vaguely in a manner which may or may not be like that of Ed, and the fact that Muffin asked about Ed.

Edit: Late as usual.

Iffy joined and spammed a bit. Ed was known for spam. Ed was immediately brought up several times. Iffy asked about this Ed he was hearing so much about. Iffy was immediately accused of being Ed despite having only superficial similarities.

Does this seem a little bit hostile to anyone else?

—Alorael, who personally thinks Tullegolar is much more likely to be Ed. After all, nobody likes Tully, so he must be a spammer and a lunatic as well.

An alternative hypothesis is that Ed is an extra account created by a mod to provide an extreme example of noobish behavior that could be cracked down on in order to scare the other noobs into better behavior. Every few months he is brought up to encourage cleaning up the boards.

I compared the IPs as soon as I saw the two posts. No match.

Posting with the wrong account has been my embarassing downfall a couple of times. Well, before I became a mod. :P
