For those without Facebook... —————————————————————————————————————————————————— —————————————————————————————————————————————————— —————————————————————————————————————————————————— —————————————————————————————————————————————————— This sums up my Calculus class Friday. Anybody else ever have days like these? Speaking of having special days, what's up with Bomber? Everyday in math makes me feel like that. Most of the pictures in that group are great. And Bomber was a jerk and got banned for it. End of story. -------------------- You acquire an item: Radio Free Foil Posts: 1169 | Registered: Monday, September 23 2002 07:00 |

The hypotenuse is 5. :) They're having you do the square root of 2? The last time I checked, that was impossible. -------------------- I tried to think of something witty to put here. Needless to say, I failed. Posts: 2686 | Registered: Friday, September 8 2006 07:00 |

That doesn't mean the number doesn't exist. :P I can only assume that sqrt(2)/2 was the correct answer and the following step was a misguided attempt at simplification. Having taken a few semesters of calculus myself, I find those pictures quite hilarious. Too bad I don't know any math teachers anymore, or I'd pass them on. -------------------- Either I'm crazy, or everybody else is nuts. The trigonometry example still did not address anything specifically in Nioca's comment. Very funny pictures, though. Emperor's certainly don't need math. I'm so happy I only had to take one math class in college, and also glad that that one class was idiot math. I'm going to graduate college with less knowledge about math than the average person, and I love it! -------------------- You lose. Posts: 2156 | Registered: Thursday, August 24 2006 07:00 |

quote:5 cm. They do actually deduct points for that. And it's not impossible. I can do the first few in my head - let's see: 1.41*1.41=1.99, approximately. And Google yields: 1.41421356 And if this isn't Algebra but, say, Numerics (or maybe even just Analysis), you might have to write that out. Um...feeling a little out of my league... A little while back in this topic I heard square root of 2 was impossible? It is 1.41421356237. Can't stop laughing at the pictures at the top, I should try that on my next math assignment. -------------------- You Shall Die Laughing: http://www.worfthecat.ermarian.net/converted The Roost: www.roost01.proboards104.com. I probably should understand the ones from Alberich better than I do. Guh. Take one year off in math and look what happens. Hopefully this precalc class I started today will help me regain all that I lost. It will either do that or completely destroy my soul. -------------------- Do not provoke the turtles. The square root of two is not rational. Trying to write it as a fraction or decimal will be problematic unless you are approximating or squaring the circle in Indiana. That does mean that the square root of two isn't known, exactly, and someone could go on calculating digits forever like they do with pi. I'm happy just writing a two under a radical. —Alorael, who really thinks that e^?i deserves discussion. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The irrationality of sqrt(2) has got to be one of the oldest known proofs. I'm fine with my math courses this semester, other than my usual problem with the couses not being streamlined. Seems that every course has nearly a month devoted to material already covered ad nauseum by other courses. Yes, I know that addition is associative. No, the formal definition of the limit of a sequence does not scare me in the slightest. And if one more professor goes through induction step by step, I'm going to walk up to the front of the class and pull out his tonsils through his anus. I was tempted to do just that earlier today when one prof stated that the Fibonacci sequence doesn't have an explicit formula.
