Who knows how many hours us active posters spend on the message boards, and while it may be fun, it is just a message board, and a fragile one at that considering it's running off of UBB. :P Why do we really spend all this time discussing things, most of them not even close to relevant to anything, with people we'll never see? What motivates us to spend so much time on the message boards, or just the Internet in general? Do we usually have better things to do? In reality, is all this E-Mail, forums, blogs, etc. a waste of time, or is it all really worth it in the long run? I have to agree with Hellbringer that it's something to do. You posted 25 times yesterday, much of which had little content. Since you respond to posts that many would consider spam I see why you are asking yourself this question. I go to school everyday, do all my homework, and am an A student. This board doesn't conflict with my education or caring for my pets and obligations. This is something I enjoy doing in my free time, so I don't see a problem with it. Edit: Also, it's just another form of social interaction. Well, if you like posting here because it's fun, it's something to do, and you like the social interaction, I did not say at all that I was against that. That's largely why I post so much here too. I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever wondered why they're sitting here reading posts instead of doing possibly more productive things. This community has many different people from all over the world, with many varying cultures and beliefs. The community has expanded my horizons, helped me through tough times, and gives me much needed social interaction (in real life, when I meet new people or am generally uncomfortable in a situation, my speech is completely incomprehensible, which means making friends in real life is much more difficult than online). It has made me a much more intelligent person than I ever would have been otherwise. Why do you do anything besides eat, sleep, and earn a living? I happen to find the forums fun, the people interesting and entertaining, and the interminable arguments enlightening. There are worse ways I could spend my time, and forums are much cheaper than building model airplanes. —Alorael, who has also learned all kinds of things he'd never otherwise know. Well, I'm a C+ student, if that, with serious motivational and responsibility issues. I suppose if any one of us has no business being here and posting regularly, it'd be me. However, I know well enough that leaving would do nothing to solve the problems that are really damaging me. So, I might as well stay around and post. What else would I do in those moments of intense boredom? Posting is a hell of a lot more healthy than drinking. I won't ever leave for the sake of recovering the time I waste here. The only thing that would ever make me leave would be if these forums got too dull for me to take. I also agree that there is something to be said for the "no real-life friends" argument. To me is mainly practical: I come here when I need help in a spidweb game and also I enjoy reading and *trying* to write in English as my mother tongue is Spanish and btw I'm from Chile. Time wasted depends on what a person's definition of "time being wasted". I actually have a small group of close friends here in LA, but since I have the summer off on college classes and they're all on vacation or back to their homes for the summer, I spend occasional time on these boards or go to work. Some of the topics are outright weird around here, while some are quite interesting to respond to or have a discussion upon. I personally do not think that these boards are a waste of time, rather it's a good way to see and view people's opinions on things they agree or disagree upon, even my own. Though there probably are some people on these boards that have difficulty making friends in reality, since human interaction actually involves more than just talking, these forum boards are a pretty good place to make friends, though chances are you'll probably never meet them, and discuss stuff on. I don't have any difficulty making friends ordinarily, and I maintain several close friendships and possess many friendly acquaintances. But one can't be with friends all the time, and when my friends are busy or asleep I come around here to kill some time. Certainly I'd rather be boozing at a party or chilling at a pal's house, but it's nice to have a community around to take away the boredom when these options aren't available. That said, there are quite a few exceptionally interesting people that I've come into contact with during my time in the community, and I'm quite grateful for that opportunity. It's fairly enjoyable to interact on a purely textual basis, but I really would jump at the opportunity to meet a friendly community member in person. That's why I enjoy our photo threads so much; interactions feel that much more real, so to speak, when you can imagine the face behind the text. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. These boards are full of individuals with interests and degrees of insanity similar to my own, so the discussions on the boards are quite satisfying. I have friends who also share my mindset to some extent, but they are not always available, and even when they are I might not always be in the chattiest of moods. SW is full of concentrated "geek," so I enjoy the opened-mindedness in a thoughtful topic or even the ramblings that go on forever, in most cases. Usually, the topics are sufficiently intelligent enough and twisted enough to pique my interest. If not, I can always create one and never fear a lack of relevant responses, or at least spam that's extremely humorous. Yes, it's all very fun, and when you have a lot of time to kill as I do at the moment, you look forward to wasting the day away like this. Also note that even though you never see the person at the other end of the board, there's still someone writing on the other end. The written word is often just as good, and even clearer than the spoken word (many foreign language speakers tend to write English better than they speak it, based on my findings); If I never hear a voice or see a face, that's fine– I'm able to see their soul through the words.
