Hmm...I thought that most people actually go to church on Christmas, voluntarily. As my first grade teacher in a Public School clearly stated to the whole class: "EVERYONE GOES TO CHURCH ON CHRISTMAS" apparently not using her "indoor" voice. Now I see that uh...she was...somewhat wrong. Not entirely. Well, lets take a poll... Who goes to church on Christmas or on Christmas Eve? If so, do you go voluntarily? -------------------- 73|-| 1|\|\/1|\|<1|3|_3 |30063y|\/|4|\| AHEM: Chance Forums! -Reality Corp. Posts: 1307 | Registered: Tuesday, May 7 2002 07:00 |

The Quaker faith believes in the universality of God's gifts of revelation, and that the only way to properly get close to God is through thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. It is a faith which greatly values egalitarianism (they gained a lot of antipathy from the English aristocracy by refusing to call them by the plural 'you', using instead 'thou', singular and more familiar), democracy, and freedom of religion, as well as introspection and free speech. We feel that the state of the 'holidays' thus far are generally repugnant, with the majority of people using them as a secular bacchanal to greed and social posturing, and the small remainder either shanghai'd into celebrating it or bemoaning the fact that they can't use it as an excuse to burn heretics any longer. Quakerism is notable in that it has, historically, been on the progressive side, and it is strongly peaceful and tolerant, being one of the few Christian denominations to recognize gay marriage until it was federally outlawed in the 50s. The approach to religion is intensely democratic; people recognize that secular study does not bring one closer to God in any way, and thus clergy are useless at best, and ruinous at worst. It is also notable for being the only major, durable religion in history which hasn't committed some kind of sanctioned atrocity. And now you are going to tell me that I am actually an Amish who likes oatmeal, despite the fact that I searched for my faith for years, am very secure in it, and know exactly what it stands for, and you are an idiot who could not tell me when the Civil War ended, much less what *yours* stands for. FYAD, sir. I've been atheist for some while now, but stupidity like this makes me doubt the non-existence of satan. EDIT: Oh yeah, and before I forget... The next time you randomly insult a religion you have no fracking idea about, much less use homophobic insults like the mentally infantile snob you are, you will be THROWN OUT OF THESE GODDAMNED BOARDS ON YOUR STRAIGHT, CHRISTIAN ASS. It's kind of cute when girls kiss. I, personally, do not celebrate Christmas. However, certain people who are very important to me enjoy Christmas very much, so I'm going to buy her some presents and she's going to buy me some. If I've been a good boy, I'm going to get a small Indian statue of the Buddha, a copy of The Art Of War, a copy of the Bhagavad-Gita, and a copy of the Qu'ran. They will be valuable additions to my collection of religious literature. And now that I know what Reality Corp. said before he edited his post, I believe Pants has a big package for you... Although my family is Hindu, we have always celebrated Christmas, albeit in a secular manner. When myself and my sisters (and my parents) were younger, we would all put up a tree, give presents, play carols on the stereo, and have a good time. It's not quite as fun nowadays as it used to be, as my siblings and I are all well into adulthood. However, we do as much as our tight schedules allow us to do. We don't use a tree anymore, but we still give gifts and share some quality time. And Reality Corp., your statements give off a strong hint of intolerance. You would do well to keep such comments to yourself. -------------------- "Let a man find himself, in distinction from others, on top of two wheels with a chain- at least in a poor country like Russia- and his vanity begins to swell out like his tires.
