Could someone explain to me how blood types work, in simplistic terms? I've never understood that. (And please, i'm not interested in what the Japanese read into them). Thank you. -------------------- ... Posts: 647 | Registered: Wednesday, February 19 2003 08:00 |

I believe each represents the presence or absence of certain antigens. There are four blood types, not including Rh factor and the obscure Bombay type: AB A B O People cannot receive blood with antigens theirs does not have. O represents the absence of such antigens, and AB represents the presence of both A and B antigens. Thus AB blood types can receive blood from any donor, but only give blood to other ABs; whereas O blood can be received by anyone, but type O receptors can only receive blood from type O donors. Rhesus factor I'm not so sure about, but I think that Rh- can only receive Rh- blood, whereas Rh+s can receive both Rh+ and Rh-. IANAD, though, so don't act on this knowledge. Blood type is inherited genetically; blood type is divided in Canada (O/A/B/AB) 46/42/9/3 per hundred. This may not be entirely accurate, but hey. alright, i gotta look up my biology notes on my computer now... 4 types: A, B, AB, O A: IAIA or IAi B: IBIB or IBi AB: IAIB O: ii IA and IB are dominant, i is recessive. NOTE: the A's and B's are supposed to be superscript, but i dunno how to do that in UBB code. -------------------- Urban wisdom is not actual wisdom. What's the modern rationale for mandatory conscription in Finland? It's always confused me, as it does not strike me as if mandatory conscription is useful in situations besides, say, Israel. -------------------- In a word, gay. --Bob the Impaler Posts: 2367 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Apparently, mammary tissue (so-called "Milk Ridges") form in human embryos before sex is determined. You see, early on during pregnancy, an embryo has a chance of being either sex. So male nipples just attest that we are indeed mammals. As for the Finnish conscription thing...I've done a bit of reading, but haven't come to an entirely satisfactory answer. Germany has a similar system of mandatory military duty, but their numbers were drastically reduced at the end of the cold war due to various agreements with both Russia and the US. Finland is not a member of NATO, and thus could not count on their support in case of Russian aggression. Finland is now contemplating joining NATO, and is thus considering reducing their military to a more professional, highly-trained force which would be required by NATO. Why this hasn't happened in the last 14 years, I couldn't tell you. Apparently, they're also concerned with their chances of regaining the Kurelian Isthmus. I'm sure that will happen right after Russia returns East Prussia to Germany. It's all well explained here: http://www.mil.fi/esittely/historia/index_en.html and here: http://www.mil.fi/tiedotus/julkaisut/finland_and_nato/index.html Any Finns have any answers on this? -------------------- ... That answer to was why not. On Philosphy exams in univercity they give you several blank peices of paper and on the top of the first it says "Why?" "Why Not?" is a 100% answer. quote:It's Karelian, not Kurelian. And i don't think Russian will give us Karelia back. They have no reason to give it back. I'm not saying anything about finland joining NATO, because we have had more than enough other political problems inside our country, and the NATO issued has not been discussed widely. And finland simply doesn't have the money to keep up any elite forces that require (much) money. We have small defence budget and I, like many other finns don't trust that NATO would do anything for us if russians would attack. We are small, insignifigant country. -------------------- Speed and power! Galaxies explode! And Kekkonen shall descent to punish us all! It's armageddon,it's armageddon! It's the Day of Kekkonen! I doubt the Russians would attack Finland for the hell of it. At least not their present gov't that is. Russia's economy hasn't been good for years. The gov't simply doesn't have the money to take over Finland and deal with the consequences of said aggression. It wouldn't be worth it to them. -------------------- Let the soul trading begin. and Russia's a large insignificant country. Russia's in too bad of a shape to mess with anyone. Besides even if it did, the US would gladly sieze the opportunity to needlessly bomb another country. Question: Does Windows 98 have an activation key like XP does? Or is 98 free of that annoying, time wasting bs? Posts: 1918 | Registered: Sunday, October 13 2002 07:00 |
