Are BoE scenarios eligible for the contest? I'm not good with BoA.

If he uses someone else's idea, then that person can sue him for royalties, which is not fun.

That's only if you assume that Thuryl's "solutions" actually offer the most practical benefit, which isn't necessarily true. I can say routinely killing five out of every six babies is a very efficient way to get the human population is under control, but that doesn't mean it offers the most utility. Emotional benefits are no less a part of utility than statistical benefits.

People tend to assume that logic is cold and cruel. However, it seems to me that any attempts to find logical solutions that fail to take into account the fact that humans have and are affected by emotions would be misguided.

EDIT: In fact, I could make the argument that societal decay comes not from any decline in religion at all so much as the fact that people these days are generally better off financially, and that any "moral behavior" on their part before had more to do with a lack of resources than a loss of the church. Consider that AIDS transmission is down in Zimbabwe because men no longer have the resources to keep mistresses. Similarly, people living hand-to-mouth don't have the leisure time or money to "sin." I don't think you can argue that the quality of life, as a whole, isn't vastly better than it ever has been, unless you're just being obtuse for the sake of being obtuse.

You never answered that argument, Stillness, which you should if you are arguing that A) the world is in worse shape now than in the past and that B) this is because of a decline in the practice of your personal definition of "Christianity".

EDIT: Also, AFTER you've responded to the above argument, respond to this: You say Jainism isn't practical. It's practical to the insects, to be sure. Jains believe that each and every life is equal and sacred, insects included. Nobody likes to die, insects included. Why can you kill an insect, but not a human? Just because you're a human? Why can you kill an insect to keep him from killing a human, but you can't kill a human to keep him from killing an insect? Insects are generally small and short-lived enough that one of them will rarely kill more than one or two people, even disregarding those that don't kill at all. A human will likely kill an enormous number of insects during his or her lifetime, however.

Kel, I believe he said a while back that the reason it's believable is that he thinks it's open about its faults, hence my example, and that its rules make sense based on anecdotes, to which some people (Alo definitely, Salmon maybe but I can't remember) responded by saying that anecdotal evidence can be found for anything at all, although I don't remember Stillness's response to that. It's still not a very good reason, but it's more of a reason than the reason you're attributing to him. You're burning the straw man, it seems.

Is the idea behind Discordianism basically that you should believe, not believe, and/or disregard whatever parts of the theology of Discordianism you choose and/or have forced upon you, and that you should obey, not obey, and/or disregard whatever rules of Discordianism you choose and/or have forced upon you? More simply put, is it basically a religion that is irrelevant unto itself? If this is the case, then presumably it would be possible to be both a Discordian and a Pastafarian at the same time. For reasons that matter and/or don't matter perhaps only to me, I will completely disregard Discordianism, in accordance with its irrelevant principles, thus both being and not being a Discordian at the same time.

Therefore, I will simply call myself a Pastafarian.

I said nothing of mistruth. I spoke of lack of evidence, not evidence against. It's not impossible, even if it is foolish, to keep your garbage under your bedroom window. Not everyone has a front yard to separate their bedrooms from the sidewalk, you know.

I own a copy of the Gospel, I just bought an eyepatch, I'm considering ordering an FSM symbol pendant depending on how long the chain is and whether I can get a longer one for free somewhere if it's too short, and I'm going to have ramen for dinner tonight.

The Gospel, of course, is full of contradictions and blatant lies, as Henderson admits in the foreword. He calls himself a prophet in the foreword, but that's one of those lies he mentioned. To use an analogy to Christianity, he's really more of a one-man Ecumenical Council of Trent than a Moses. The basic theology is generally sound though.

By the way, in case anyone missed it, Salmon's post here:

Edit - And who stores their garbage four feet from the bedroom window? That right there would cause credibility to leak away from the story.

is a blatant attempt to troll, and I never dismissed Bigfoot's existance in Massachusetts out of hand. I don't waste time believing it or wondering about it because I've never had any reason to, but I don't dismiss it out of hand.

I hate when people invoke Occam's Razor as evidence against God. It's not a law of physics, it's a piece of logic theory. It says "Don't make baseless assumptions", not "Anything without evidence is false". The former is useful for utilitarian purposes and for purposes of debate. The latter is a logical fallacy.

EDIT: Whoops. I just realized that Synergy didn't invoke Occam's Razor as evidence against God, but simply said not making baseless assumptions about the nature of the universe is good for utilitarian purposes, which is what Occam's Razor is. I'll leave my post in place anyway just for future reference, in case anyone actually does use it the wrong way later on.

The FSM doesn't punish people who don't believe in him, for instance. You may go insane of your own accord when you die and realize the religion you worked to follow and spread for your entire life was false, but that wouldn't be His fault. If you're not a jerk, maybe he'd even help you out as far as insanity is concerned. The FSM, cheese be upon him, is cool like that. Don't ask him for any favors when he's drunk though. He might screw up and make things worse.

Another thing: If we did believe our hypothetical zoologist mothers about Bigfoot without the evidence I mentioned or some other equally convincing evidence, we would be committing an ipse dixit fallacy. Science doesn't work that way, no matter what religious zealots (I'm not saying that includes you so don't address that and ignore everything else) may tell you.

By the way, Stillness, it's easy to fake honesty and believability. The Bible seems honest because it admits things, according to you, but believing or asserting things because of that is a common fallacy as well. I can't find it on the Fallacy Files (which I link to not because of a belief that it's an absolute authority, but because I find that it provides good proofs and counterproofs, examples, etc.), so I'll try to give an example from my own head. Don't expect it to make sense, but don't expect it not to either. I'm not good at explaining things sometimes, but sometimes I get lucky. Take it on its own merits, in other words.

Before I give the example, I will, for purposes of this example, define the word "prophet" as "a being who delivers spiritual, divine, and/or supernatural truths from a conventionally imperceptible realm (for instance, in Christianity, God) to the perceptible realm (the world we live in and observe directly)."

Let's say there's an ancient religion whose prophets tell us that it's an abhorrent act to kill any insect, and that you must carry a broom at all times and sweep the ground where you walk to brush aside any insects you might otherwise step on. Would you believe this religion?

Now, let's take that same scenario, and add to it that the prophets admit that they have killed insects in the past, but that it was wrong and they don't do it anymore (as of the times of the deliverance of their messages). The prophets were being honest. Now would you believe that killing an insect is abhorrent, and now would you believe that you must carry a broom to sweep the ground you walk on? Would you believe the religion?

Only if she provided convincing evidence of it (say, capturing it or at least getting some hair with intact roots or a tissue sample of some sort), otherwise she'd lose her good reputation as a scientist and people would call her a quack. Other quacks might be less strict about standards of proof, however.

In the hidden bonus track on Chris Rock's Bigger & Blacker album, the middleweight boxing champion of the world has just been declared. An interviewer asks him how he won, so he thanks God and says he couldn't have done it without God's help. Then, the interviewer talks to the loser, who has some broken bones, bruises, and a dislocated eyeball, and the loser says that he almost won, but then God punched him in the head and beat him up. He could have beaten his opponent one-on-one, but him against the champion and the Lord together isn't fair.

You don't need to be a Pastafarian or conform to the more specific bits of FSM's system of ethics to get into FSM's heaven, but it helps.

ps. This previous statement just begs for someone to find a reference or illustrative picture.

There's nothing wrong with wearing symbols around your neck (cross necklaces are everywhere and nobody, not even atheists, complains). As for people who utilize bumper stickers and street corner preaching, in the latter case it's usually in response to obnoxious missionaries and evangelists (you generally wouldn't see them forcing their views on people walking past Buddhist temples, for instance, unless they're jerks in which case the FSM doesn't like them anyway regardless of what they think) and in the former case you don't have to look.

Going door to door to interrupt people's meals and/or work or derailing every thread that even touches upon religion and some that don't, however, is quite a different story, because you can't just ignore someone standing at your door (especially those who ring repeatedly and don't leave), and even if one person wants to ignore the new subject of the thread, everyone else has moved on to arguing about religion so you look like an idiot if you try to respond to the original topic. Yes, I know you started the thread without mentioning religion, Stillness, but three posts later you were also the one who brought up religion and made started making stupid statements.

When I was about twelve years old and the only person home at the time, minding my own business and mowing the lawn, one particularly obnoxious Jehovah's Witness stood at my next-door uncle's door ringing the doorbell for about twenty minutes. I didn't realize he was a missionary (he was wearing a business suit, so I thought he was some sort of financial adviser or something) so I told him I didn't think he was home and to come back later. The guy then walked up to me, a lone child, on my private property (not even on my walkway, actually into my back yard), entirely without my invitation, and started handing me all sorts of stupid propaganda and asking if I knew who Jesus was like I had been living under a rock my whole life. He wouldn't leave despite me telling him to until I took his propaganda. Stupid fricking Watchtower garbage. Ugh.

EDIT: Minor typos.

The only reason those disbelievers make their disbelief known all the time in those situations is that they're constantly reacting to the believers constantly preaching.

Regardless of your religion or lack thereof, however, you must admit that the FSM is pretty darn cute. Just look at his big round eyes on his noodly eye stalks!

Stillness, the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster says the best way to get to Heaven is to be a pirate with appropriate boat and outfit, and that being a jerk (like insisting your way is the best way and saying men can have positions that women can't while not prohibiting men from having positions that women can have) is a pretty good way to keep you out of Heaven. Parrots are good too. Also make sure you eat plenty of pasta (whole grain is just dandy, of course, if you're concerned about nutrition). It's sad that you're so hell-bent on pushing your religion that you'll derail every thread that is even tangentially related to religion just to push yours. I'm not saying you have to be a pirate to go to Heaven, because you don't, although it gets you more on the FSM's good side. You just need to stop being a jerk.

They're already playable, they just aren't included in the download. You can download them separately from TrueSite for Blades. Click on Walkthroughs, select the first letter of the name of the scenario you want (including VoDT, ASR, and ZKR), ignoring the words "A", "An", and "The" if they are at the beginning of the name (for instance, look under S for "A Small Rebellion").

I agree.

So let’s say we get a woman that meets all of the qualifications for an elder except for her sex. The moment we decide to make her an elder we cease functioning as Christians and have started to form a man-made religion. God’s spirit no longer works with us and our religion becomes vain. On the other hand this same woman can be a very effective preacher and teacher and a strong member of the congregation without overstepping boundaries. Her talents and energies are not wasted. God is happy. The congregation is happy.
To make it more clear what we're asking you at the moment, Stillness, how do you reconcile these two statements?

How do you burn up or hoard fatigue? From what I understand, what it means is that you use an ability, become fatigued for a number of rounds as a result, and then you can't use an ability again until you're no longer fatigued.
