A5: Changing Saved Game Location? in Tech Support

Is it possible to change the saved game location in A5, or to otherwise mimic the effect? I used to save my BoA save files to my idisk, allowing me to access them from both my laptop & desktop. But with A5 (maybe 4, didn't try when I played through it) they default to docs and can't be accessed elsewhere. I tried an alias to the folder, but no go. Any other ideas/workarounds? -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Posts: 22 | Registered: Sunday, April 3 2005 08:00 |

Clarification: gated room, as in a portcullis not a door. So not unlock-able. I definitely killed everything, not sure what I could have missed. Again, I found a lever for each gate but the 3rd one won't budge... Oh well, its a long walk back anyway. ;) -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Yeah, the lag on the blessing is a bit irritating. My suggestion is to enter fight mode as far from each one as possible (which is pretty much how the fight system works now anyway  ) stay put and hit em with a few missles or a spell while they come to you. That usually breaks their protection by the time they are within melee range. As for the quest, just fight your way through the spiral to the lower level and kill the shade thing in the center. If you talked to the mayors wife (does an undead spouse count you as widowed?) you can complete her quest while your down there. -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! I don't think the golem generators are the point of the panels. Did any of the vahnati from outside survive the bridge demon? If not, then the I don't think the panels serve a purpose... There are 3 control panels and a machine you can break (guarded by giants). I was able to turn off all the panels (at least thats what the messages said) then break the machine. I'm not sure if the order has anything to do with it.. I might have just gotten lucky. Either way, the golems kept coming but i was able to talk to my frozen vahnati allys and "free" them... not that they did much other than run defense on the golems. Khoths ruins have 3 gated rooms w/ spellbooks in them, only 2 of which could I get open by using levers. The 3rd lever has a message about a complex lock or some such I cannot work. Am I missing a clue, or simply not attainable? -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Posts: 22 | Registered: Sunday, April 3 2005 08:00 |

Thats odd... I'm not sure what might have happened. I have seen people tell stories about bizarre things happening to later quests if you head into the scree caves before you are supposed to, but not that. Unless someone else has a suggestion, you might have to cheat your way out. Type shift-d then enter "backtostart", and hit enter. This will return you to Ft Monastary. I have never used this myself, so be forwarned. Previous Avernum games have had bizzare results when cheating your way out of areas. Good luck! -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Posts: 22 | Registered: Sunday, April 3 2005 08:00 |

People hate you as in they won't talk to you, or they are attacking you? If they just have very unresponsive responses (if that makes any sense) then your fine, thats part of the plot. If they are attacking you... don't know what you did then. As for entry into Formello, you must get orders from the commander of Ft Draco before they will let you in. -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! I believe you must speak w/ the commander of Ft Remote. He will give you another small (but challenging) quest to complete before he will lower the barrier. -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Posts: 22 | Registered: Sunday, April 3 2005 08:00 |

I believe that the assassins you release from the crystal box drop a fine waveblade... which worked out well for me since I got the quest for one right before taking said box upstairs... :D -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Quick Note About Graphics in Avernum 4

My 2 cents: I think the PC graphics look pretty good, its the lacking variety compared to the previous Avernum games I dislike. The enemy graphics from Geneforge don't bother me as I have played Geneforge for exactly 14 minutes (just didn't dig it). My biggest graphic complaint... the item graphics changing! Sure, I got over it by the end of the demo portion, but I get confused when suddenly healing potions look like energy potions and all the graymold I'm seeng is actually some other herb. And yes, I am too lazy to open the game up and actually check which ingredient is using the old graymold icon. Finally, I appreciate Jeff posting in this way. -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Posts: 22 | Registered: Sunday, April 3 2005 08:00 |

I seem to remember the command was available prior to registering. You hit Shift-D and enter a command. The commands are listed in the hint book if you ordered it, if not I think theres a thread already with all of them (I don't have them at the moment). In addition, you can use the editor created by Hawk King. Its pretty cool, and accessed right from the game. The link is at the top of the forum page. -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Posts: 22 | Registered: Sunday, April 3 2005 08:00 |

I will probably continue to play BoA after completing A4, but not right away. There are still a number of scenarios I have yet to try out, but I tend to burn out every few months and have to take some time away from Avernum. With that in mind, I'll offer my suggestions for the developers: 1. Its not lack of quality scenarios, its the lack of unique quality scenarios. The design contest rules (which seem to have been removed) mentioned the idea of scenarios not in Avernum, which I'd love to see. Sci-fi tinted plots, modern or future timelines, real life locations, more traditional RPG styling, cowboys & dinosaurs... I would love a "Link to the Past" type scenario that sends my characters into Avernum's future or distant past as part of some game spanning puzzle. And a simple Star Trek style "The future you saw is only one of many possible..." statement keeps it canon. 2. Far more open-ended stories. My biggest complaint about most BoA scenarios, not to mention A3 & A4, are how linear they are. The original Exile/Avernum plotline is what IMHO made it so outstanding. Unlike every sequel and most scenarios since, you start off the orginal with no clue as to the game spanning quests that lie ahead (other than the "Escape from the Pit" subtitle I suppose). 3. Also, notice the plural "quests"... multiple endings are a must have for large scenarios as far as I am concerned. And while I appreciate choice style ending (i.e. DwtD), I prefer the finish one plot, and here's an entirly different one style of the original Exile/Avernum. I also love the chance to skip the plot altogether (i.e. A Perfect Forest)... makes it that much more fufilling when you complete every possible bit of the scenario. 4. On the flip side of the above, I am not downing the short scenarios. Escaping into Avernum, and having a complete adventure is a great way to kill an hour. For some reason though, the short scenarios tend to be the ones that get way to philisophical for my tastes. Thats really all I've got I suppose. I will say that I never got into BoE, so I don't know how many scenarios for that engine might meet my suggestions. And, like most of the posters to this thread, I'd love to someday create my own scenario to flesh out my vison of the perfect game (which more or less exists in my head), but I haven't got the skills or the time to develop those skills... -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Not that I dislike the changes mind you, I just find the idea of hauling a passed-out nephil back to town somehow sillier than dragging his corpse back to be reanimated. Regarding the point "if I can be resurrected, can't any of the baddies I kill?" I refer back to the days of Exile when re-entering a dungeon got you swarmed with everything you just killed over and over again... ah, memories. Also, I just realized this was the 1st time I have posted, even though I've been playing since I first escaped from the pit back in 96. I've even been reading these boards since I (quite happily) discovered my favorite games had been recreated a few years back. Keep up the good work Jeff! (BTW, Synergy my signature is not a play on yours, I use it on all boards I post to. Great minds think alike maybe?) -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! I find the new "death" system a bit childish. I just want to draw the comparison to Pokemon, where your characters never die either, they just pass out. We're walking around a giant cave slaying lizard men with magic swords, not throwing balls filled with yellow rats at other yellow rats... its OK to actually die. That is all. -------------------- Signature v2.0 Now with more Retzin! Posts: 22 | Registered: Sunday, April 3 2005 08:00 |
