I see your point. And so it can't totally be about missing things, because then you'd be right.

I don't know.

Maybe it's 'cus secret doors were a part of the games when I started playing? And usually they make lots of sense, like the faery in the Hollow Hills in Nethergate, who wants privacy.

The recipes just seem, I don't know. Like the were tacked on...

And for somebody who is supposedly good with words, I'm having difficulty explaining this. Maybe I just don't like them, and don't have a good reason? Let me get back to ya. :P

Oh, and upon mars should be uncanned for the above post. Just because he actually amde me giggle :P

Yes! I am the Walrus, and all of my plans are poised to be set into motion!

Gah. I need to listen to the White Album again...

Seriously, changing is great. Aran used to spam like nobody's business, and even used "lol" in a post (the horror!). He was a pox. We even considered moving just to get rid of him. But now he doesn't spam (as much). And he deletes the "lol". And he doesn't mention that he was a terrible poster after every post, either.

Not being "-X-" is a good thing. You just don't have to keep alluding to the fact that you were. All I'm saying is that, you know, just be NORMAL, and quit saying "Oh, almost slid back into the prat I keep reminding you all of". It's not big or clever.

(Oh, and Aran, I'm sorry :P )

Actually, I do love hidden doors. I'm replaying Nethergate at the moment, and still finding new things (Well, actually one new thing. :P ). I think losing them was one of Jeff's biggest mistakes.

The crafting thing just seems, a bit pointless. In fairness it's a bit like Tully's argument about alchemy. It's a bit daft to expect that from a list of four things a totally inexperienced NPC could make a shiny belt or something. I mean, could you make me a rocking chair if I said you needed wood, nails, a hammer and a saw?

Exactly who are you addressing? I understood all the posts made in this thread recently. Okay, having perfect spelling and grammar is nice, but don't jump anybody not dotting i's and crossing t's properly, please!

In fact, Nalyd, I think when you are about to post, you should look at what you just typed, and if it's nothing more than saying "Write in perfect English or die", then you probably shouldn't post it.

Right. I don't want to see any more crafting in Avernum. I hate it in GF, mainly because I think I'm missing out on something...

Also, bring back houses! I loved this in E/A3, although given the setting for A5 it may be difficult...

And I must be the only person who couldn't care about alchemy. All I ever use are energy elixirs anyway, and I don't care whether or not I make them or buy them.

Oh, I see. And of the two, I think you made the right choice.

I just hope that in years to come I'm remembered for my lustful ways and BoA design (and maybe my writing), instead of my constant whinging... :P

Dialogue? in Blades of Avernum Editor

Crimson Editor also has a built-in spell checker, which isn't perfect but should suffice.

As far as writing dialogue goes, I can't help. Either it comes to me, or it doesn't. It's not a science so much as an art, but at least read through it and make sure it sounds as if it might actually be spoken.

New Cold War US-Russia? in General

The whole idea of having nuclear weapons scares me terribly, regardless of who is controlling them. If the US goes ahead with the plans, then I can completely see why Russia would want to start making more missiles. But, and this is the crux, I don't think they should.

Maybe I'm just some hippy, but making huge amounts of bombs can never be a good idea. All it takes is for one over-enthusiastic leader to press the button, and it won't be love but the bomb that brings us together.

I also object to letting Bush build all kinds of missile bases in the UK, but that's a debate for another time.

Zimbabwe. in General

So, I was watching the news last night, and apparently, a large number of Zimbabwean people have taken to the streets in protest against President Mugabe. The way the newsreader was talking, it sounded as if a civil war could break out.

Now, I can't for the life of me find any links on the BBC website, or anywhere else for that matter, and the details I have are sketchy, but should something happen over there, and we have a chance to remove Mugabe from power, do we act upon it?

So far, I can see a few positives, obviously, but also several key negatives.

Firstly, we don't want another Iraq/Afghanistan. Our troops are too bogged down as it is, before we even consider another conflict.

Secondly, if just the Brits go, we're looking at potential alienation from the people. Old colonial powers sticking their noses in Africa's business is something that the African's I speak to seem to hate without limit.

I could also state a third point, but, well, it's too controversial, and probably overtly subjective, and me ranting about how our nations screw over Africa isn't the point here.

Anyway, what does everybody think? Do we support the civil movement, but stay out from the conflict in all ways? Do we have nothing at all to do with it? Do we give the people weapons? Or do we go and fight along-side them?

Or, something completely different?

Edit: For anybody who isn't aware of anything about Zimbabwe, here is a BBC profile. It's pretty crappy, but it's okay for basic info: Zimbabwe on the BBC

Exile 3 also had this feature.

I don't remember it, and I played nothing but E3 and BoE for about a solid year. All I remember about avoiding combat is a message that said: "Combat: Monsters fled!"

I've just checked, and you can avoid fights. You get a small dialog box asking if you want to skip the battle... At least, you can in Upper Exile.

Healing pods are really common, so they should never be a real problem. Returning to town often might help, since that restores your health completely, and only using pods when absolutely necessary should make sure you don't run out as often.

Just be sure to check all cabinets/boxes/chests.

And good luck. :)

what is the best A game in The Avernum Trilogy
Shaper
Member # 3442

I voted A2, but it was very nearly a vote for A3. My reasons are similar to those already expressed by people who also voted A2. The atmosphere was just amazing. It was the only Avernum game I felt claustrophobic in. Which, really, is the whole point.

quote:
Originally written by Emperor Tullegolar:

I suppose if you prefer things like that to epic battles, cool dungeons, and mystery plot then Avernum 2 is the way to go.
Epic battles? Like the Zigguraut in A2 - the biggest battle in ANY Avernum game, and probably the biggest fight Jeff's coded?

Cool Dungeons? Like the Halls of Choas? Or the Zigguraut again? Or any of the Empire forts where the Crystal souls were? Avernum didn't have any generic towns that I can think of, whereas maybe 75% of Valorim was packed with guys called "Merry" and cross-shaped houses.

Mystery Plot? Like the whole idea of the Crystal Souls in A2? A3 might have been an okay "whodunnit"-kinda-thing, but A2 had the whole "mystery" thing down much better. And the fact you didn't win the war single-handedly was much more realistic than 4 people entirely destoying a Vahnatai war machine.

Erm, bi-polar isn't anything like what you're describing. Having two "people" in your head probably makes you more likely to be schizophrenic.

Oh, and you can rest in certain places in GF. Like in Quessa-Uss.

Personally, I prefer Avernum, but when I think why, it always goes down to two things - I like being able to attack in not in combat mode (in Exile you HAD to enter combat to fight), and I don't like respawning dungeons (in Exile, monsters come back to dungeons even if you wipe them out completely).

Plus it looks nicer :P

Personally, I'm torn on the whole CD-or-key form of registration. I mean if I have the choice to just buy a key, I will. It's quicker, and I save about a fiver on shipping fees (Nethergate cost me $40 to buy).

BUT...

I adore my Nethergate CD. It has all the Spiderweb demos on it, so if I need to reinstall, they're all in one place. And it looks pretty!

So, even if there is an option for me to pay my 12 bucks and download the game, I might buy the CD this time.

(Also, your envelopes are way cooler than ours :P )
