Gazerskin Sandals... in Avernum 4 | |

Well, putting this together with the impassibility of tiny stalagmites, we might conclude that the Gazerskin Sandals are the only footwear in all of Avernum that actually have soles. The unique plantar comfort this provides makes your combat stance so much more relaxed, it effectively boosts your armor by a ton. In A5 they will introduce Poor Leather Socks as a special item, which will have a partial effect in this direction. Seriously, it could be that the Gazerskin Sandals are supposed to help you dodge, perhaps by giving you some Gazerish levitation powers that make you really bouncy and springy. Well, not exactly that you want to gain levels slowly, but that the exp scaling causes experience bunching: penalties are not as bad as they seem, advantages are not quite as good. If you have a penalty, you will always be behind (assuming you fight the same battles, and neglecting round-off issues that might conceivably falsify the thesis inconsequentially). But if your exp penalty is 20%, you will reach the same levels in less than the 125% of the time that you would naively estimate. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. It got busted up and reforged a time or two, didn't it? So there was some shrinkage. A few pieces bounced under the couch and were lost forever. Ensorcelled blades are not usually designed to be recyclable. [ Tuesday, December 20, 2005 10:30: Message edited by: Student of Trinity ] -------------------- We're not doing cool. I once concocted a conjoined twin gazer (er, beholder). I forget what happened if it focused on you, but it must have been worth seeing once. Based on the available evidence, it seems unnecessary to conclude that Icshi is loathsome. There's a hornblowing line for your sig file, if you want it. Until very recently, you might have been the person who was about to have long ago created the game Rock Solid. But now, for now, this person was Richard White. Better luck last time. EDIT: The error in this post was about to be corrected by the subsequent one, before now. I have no problems with projecting blue concentrate and the like, but Sokoban doesn't have goblins, and I think we should honor the union rules on this one. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

Seeing as I finished the game last time with more unopened bottles than a Mormon missionary in Munich, I think I may just chug the invulnerability potion. But the Haste option sounds as though, of all the tactics, it would feel least like cheating. I struggled long and hard in the beta test trying to kill the Testing Bones, before eventually learning that I couldn't, and the goal was just to go the distance. I found them far worse than any of the other tests. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

On the other hand, I was never munchkin enough to care that my experience wasn't rising much. I wanted to explore everything anyway. And I'm just as glad this didn't make me any more godlike than I already was, or the endgame would have been disappointing even for me. The only ways I can see to avoid that problem are (a) Jeff's choice of giving negligible exp for smelling the roses, and (b) cranking the difficulty to the point where you actually need to snort every stamen just to survive. Option (b) seems worse to me, because I think it would replace the pleasure of free exploration with the tedium of being dragged through a compulsory and chaotic scavenger hunt. -------------------- We're not doing cool. Thuryl, what difficulty level are you playing on? And what was your trick for the Testing Bones? I had a devil of a time with that on my first run through on Normal, and now going back on Torment, it's coming up soon, and seriously ydrad. -------------------- We're not doing cool. It is only Terra, or Earth, that SubTerra is sub, or under. RWG surely represents a profundity of deepness far more deeply profound than the merely earthly, and thus warrants the bottom place. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. You can gradually get rid of acid with a series of lower grade Cures, I think. But bad enemies seem to give you heavier doses of acid, so it sure helps to have a really good Curer. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. In a word, yes. I'm not a big fan of mechanical puzzles or riddles in FRPGs, since it's extremely hard to make them seem remotely realistic in context. There are only so many plausible scenarios where you should be faced by these things. But there could certainly have been things to figure out, more realistic things. The engine would seemingly support stuff like places you have to figure out to go to from minimal hints, and can't reach without completing a sequence of actions that no-one would follow by chance. There don't seem to be any things like that in A4. But there are a lot of good battles, and a lot of stuff to explore. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Well, they seem to move in bounds. There are certain places where they stop and wait to exchange a few words with you before going on. If you play along with them, this can probably seem quite tactically realistic. By the time I got to these guys, though, I was finding the game too easy on Normal, so I avoided or ignored them. I even got some of them to fight each other at one point (hit one so he goes hostile, then let the others mob him since he becomes their closest enemy). Not sure if that has been fixed. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |
