Rent: hah, Bayern probably won't make it past the 1st round, what with having to play against Milan and Deportivo la coruna. I think Ajax has a much better chance of making it to the 2nd round, with Inter milan as the only real threat to them in the D group.

X and Lady M: I just have been doing some reading up on the incident at Luton, the hillsboroguh and Heysel disasters, and i must say it was more horrible then i remebered.. but it seems like those were really the worst incidents, the rest of brittish hooligan history reads just like the dutch version. or am i wrong there, and was it really that bad every weekend during the late 80's?

well, on another note, the European Championship for countries is coming along soon again IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards To all European football fans (2)_files/smile.gif)
Do you think your country will make it all the way? Myself, i'm just praying holland will make it to the EC at all.. we have one of the daftest trainers in Holland leading our national team at the moment IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards To all European football fans (2)_files/frown.gif)
We're playing Austria this weekend, which should be easy, but i have my doubts. Then we have to play the Czech team, which is better at the moment than the Dutch team...

edit: some spelling errors, please forgive me if i missed some IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards To all European football fans (2)_files/wink.gif)

The whole point is the trying to pass it on. some genes on your DNA are activated to cause you to try to have sex.. in analogy, memes are only those ideas that you try to share, wether succesfull or not. Secrets aren't memes for example.

Besides, the propagation of genes and the propagation of memes is very different in all sorts of aspects. Genes come in pairs, memes don't have to, or could come in a wide variety on the same theme. The set of genes that in the end causes you to become sexually aroused also makes sure half your genes are propagated, memes can do nothing of the sort, except for some very powerfull ones like 'god exists'. And even for that meme, there's no telling how much of the bible or any other religious book you are going to start believing in.

an idea is not a meme until it causes you to try and share this idea with someone else. during the transmission of a meme, it will change because the receiver interprets the idea slightly (or wildly) different than the transmittor. The study of the spread AND evolution of memes is memetics.
I know some people don't believe in memes, and are actively trying to plant this idea into the minds of others, thus proving that memes exist.

In relation to the topic, a culture is a group of memes that has evolved and been propagated for long enough, to reside firmly in the minds of a group of people.

Sorry, i don't know any statistical jokes. however, i would like to take this opportunity to vent some of my irritation about statistics.

People tend to refer to the small figures in statistics as 'the exception to the rule'. This is just insane! if there's an exception, you've got no rule, or if there's rules, exceptions are just law-breakers.

whew, that made me feel better..

Well, i don't watch anime very often, but i quite liked Noir, especially the modern-classical-techno music accompanying many action scenes.
And Vash the Stampede was extremely funny IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Your favourite anime_files/smile.gif)

edit:
oh, themesongs! well Noir's themesong is a lot worse then the music during the action. but the song for Vash rocks!

Dransik is an MMORPG.. but if you can't remember it right away, chances are you're not the guy i know from their forum.

Oh and i have to agree with mortification, boeing. Users on these boards are very well behaved, from what i've seen so far. No flaming (at least not real flames), quite intelligent posts, very little spamming... yeah, this is definitely one of the most civilized boards i've ever read.

Edit: The only thing i can't figure out yet are the coherent groups..

MD: actually i got that from a book by Terry Pratchet and 2 co-authors, called 'The Science of Discworld II: the Globe'

And i think discussing the significance of culture is quite pointless, as everyone has a subjective view of their own culture, and a narrow subjective view of other cultures.
Besides, the question was: What is culture.

The only things worth talking about in my opinion is how cultures interact, and describing aspects of cultures. The last mainly cause i'm just curious. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Culture_files/smile.gif)

Culture is the extelligence, that combined with your intelligence gives rise to your sense of self. That and all the extelligence that never ever even comes into contact with your intelligence. But those bits of culture aren't important to yourself, cause if they were they wouldn't be out of touch with you.

We've had our share of football-fanatics violence here as well, up to the point were 'supporters' from two clubs actually made an appointment to battle in a field next to a highway. Some people got killed that day, and since then it has become a bit more tranquil, i.e. they mostly stick to smashing up bus stops and parked cars after a match.

What i've always wondered about is the lack of fences in the stadiums in the UK. English hooligans are usually considered the worst behaving supporters in Europe. Do the clubs keep them out of the stadium or something like that? Or are they just as sweet as kittens in their own country, and is that the reason they are so rowdy when they get to the mainland? (all that pent up anger..)

Sadly, in most countries sports is more populair then politics. I believe this is so because of a combination of more entertainment, more excitement and because sport clubs can't raise taxes.

And i don't think people in the USA are as fanatic about sports as people in South America, were the goalie of the Argentinian national football team once got lynched by an angry mob over a lost final match.

I don't hope Man U. does either well or bad.. i'm quite neutral towards them untill they have to play a dutch team IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards To all European football fans_files/smile.gif) which i believe would be Ajax again if they both make it to the semi-finals.

I'm sure looking forward to sept 19, when Ajax will meet Milan again. I'm watching Milan playing Porto now by the way! (Supercup, 1-0 for Milan at the moment)

ASTRONOMY UPDATE: Mars in General

it is actually directly opposite to the big dipper in the sky.. the big dipper should be close at the horizon to the NNW at 0:00 AM, and Mars should be to the SSE at that point, also quite low. At about 20:30 PM, Mars has started to rise in the ESE, probably while it's still light. By 1:20 AM, Mars will be directly south, and on 6:00 AM it will start to sink beneath the western horizon.

I got this info from a dutch website, and the height may differ in ontario, lower as you live more to the north, and higher to the south.. Ontario is quite big compared to Holland so you could live either more to the north or more to the south than me IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards ASTRONOMY UPDATE Mars_files/smile.gif)

I'm afraid you're right about PSV IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards To all European football fans_files/frown.gif)
But Ajax only barely made it because they are lazy.. once they're up against Milan they'll be focused, and they'll play a lot better then PSV does in the Champioins league. too bad they never keep it up in the dutch competition though.
