I've met people I knew online. But we were a smaller and more tight-knit community, with older members and a very defined goal. When we ran out of other things to say, we just began discussing stories, fictional biographies, etc.

We also had an agenda of places and events we were going to visit, so we didn't end up sitting around awkwardly. It worked very well.

It's accurate. Any discrepancy you may see is merely a maladjustment of reality. Or, as is more likely, the delay of the updates.

Seriously though, what discrepancies?

Funny, PostNuke is also a content management system. I read three of those listed. But those three aren't as good as some of the other ones I read:

- XKCD. FFS, this should be at the top of every webcomic list.

- Girl Genius - lots of Steampunk and Mad Science
- Questionable Content
- Dominic Deegan, Oracle for Hire
- Sinfest
- Decorum
- LinT
- Dungeon Crawl Inc.
- Scary Go Round

opus is a work. RiB should be described by a different tense, which would probably be something like "that which will be a work". But my Latin is lacking.

That sounds... impressive.

I don't think I've ever eaten less than a whole pizza when I've eaten one at all - unless I was sharing with someone, and then we had something else too.

What kind of pizzas do they have in America to make this a feat?

These stats are still available at http://endeavor.ermarian.net .

I even lifted the moratorium on the post ranking some time ago. Only the monthly summaries are gone, partly because meta-spam is disgusting and partly because it was the most work-intensive part of maintaining the site. Other than that, it requires about 10 minutes of attention per month.

1. Dikiyoba, Ephesos or Alorael. But honestly I would prefer a real convention with everybody over a meeting between two members.

2. Firstly, a magnum opus is a grand work, a masterpiece. I suppose that with "who" you are asking for the most prominent member.

But personality cults are worthless. I'll list several persons who I think are contributing or have contributed a lot to the community (which includes the satellites, and thus people banned here): Kel and TM are likely the best scenario designers around, Alec writes astute if impassioned political commentary, TGM makes graphics, Nikki writes great poems (on Shadow Vale though - we really should have another poetry thread here), Ephesos, Premonition, Sir David, Dikiyoba, Nazgul, Dintiradan, Frozen Feet and others have produced awesome roleplays. The list isn't done yet.

3. Only when I'm around to see it. Of late, I've been kept up to date by the RSS feed and complaints over AIM and, so the stuff I read is mostly what needs mod action or is interesting.

4. That would be Embers of Rebellion.

5. I couldn't get A3 to start in 2003. Then I just stuck around.

6. Polaris, Shadow Vale, and I lurk at Desp.

7. Dikiyoba. Ephesos could get another modship, too.

8. Six degrees east and forty-two degrees north, very roughly. I speak ze German, but I speak also ze English whole well.

Apparently a low postcount combined with a topic nobody has heard about combines in the mind to set off a powerful spam vibe. Amusingly, this has also set off a mental filter that refuses to recognize the original post as the flawless English (but for one typo and one or two idiomatic slips) it was.

I am slightly irked. This is a topic about a game in the General forum of a discussion board about games. It was started by a human who did not register to start this topic. It plugs a non-commercial fan-owned discussion board that from its size clearly does not depend on being advertised here.

In short, it is a more useful contribution to this forum than any number of other topics here. The same cannot be said about the responses. Seriously.

Now consider the tortoise and the eagle.

The tortoise is a ground-living creature. It is impossible to live nearer the ground without being under it. Its horizons are a few inches away. It has about as good a turn of speed as you need to hunt down a lettuce. It has survived while the rest of evolution flowed past it by being, on the whole, no threat to anyone and too much trouble to eat.

And then there is the eagle. A creature of the air and high places, whose horizons go all the way to the edge of the world. Eyesight keen enough to spot the rustle of some small and squeaky creature half a mile away. All power, all control. Lightning death on wings. Talons and claws enough to make a meal of anything smaller than it is and at least take a hurried snack out of anything bigger.

And yet the eagle will sit for hours on the crag and survey the kingdoms of the world until it spots a distant movement and then it will focus, focus, focus on the small shell wobbling among the bushes down there on the desert. And it will leap...

And a minute later the tortoise finds the world dropping away from it. And it sees the world for the first time, no longer one inch from the ground but five hundred feet above it, and it thinks: what a great friend I have in the eagle.

And then the eagle lets go.

And almost always the tortoise plunges to its death. Everyone knows what the tortoise does this. Gravity is a habit that is hard to shake off. No one knows why the eagle does this. There's good eating on a tortoise but, considering the effort involved, there's much better eating on practically anything else. It's simply the delight of eagles to torment tortoises.

But of course, what the eagle does not realize is that it is participating in a very crude form of natural selection.

One day a tortoise will learn how to fly.
