If you think such tales are weird for you users, try imagining how weird they sound to people who actually know their way around computers. "I fixed my car. Turns out that that clown sticker on the dashboard was adversely affecting the engine, so I took it off and the car promptly started." :P -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. Nixon was pardoned by his interim successor, after he left his office more or less in disgrace. He resigned before he could be convicted, but it was looking likely. Is it too much to hope that the current president fares likewise? I know that this would leave us with almost a year of Cheney in the seat of power, but I'm not seeing what difference that would make from right now. -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. I will be going home in a few hours and will make sure to grab my old material before then so I have time to rework my faction on the train. I had also best prepare my first ICs, which will see the KoM/GG encounter as well as the arrival of the Kazite mission. Preferably not at the same time. :P -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. The RP has not started yet. Once it does, we'll take care of the proper threads. (Maps thread should be separate, if we decide to have an updating faction map again. I can tell you right now that I will no longer have time to maintain that; I can upload the last versions I do have though.) I'll require some time to resummarize my faction, but I'm pretty sure this won't take off before the weekend anyhow. Posts: 8752 | Registered: Wednesday, May 14 2003 07:00 |

I cannot currently access the poll (or the forum, in fact; I'm not really here). But I'd just like to ask what mystical force of gravity would make life work reasonably on any world that is neither spherical (standard gravity pulls inward) nor disk-shaped (magic gravity pulls us "down"). If you went to the edge of a cylinder, at what point would you experience the awful vertigo of "Up is Sideways"? Posts: 8752 | Registered: Wednesday, May 14 2003 07:00 |

Have you thought of visiting the Santharian Dream? I haven't been there in a year and don't know what it's like these days. Last I saw, there's a lot of pressure, occasional quibbles between the veterans, and newbies get scared off easily (so it's kind of like an Open-Source software project). But as far as world-building goes, they're the pros. If you want to start from the ground up or have radical new ideas, you won't find it at Santharia, but even so it would help you to see how established groups assemble fiction together. BoE will soon (already?) work for Linux, and I believe I have successfully run BoA in Wine before. If this is impossible, I may be wrong. The OP starts off with an interesting point, which is that the single greatest drawback of switching to an ultimately superior operating system is to lose access to the broad range of Windows software. I recommend dualbooting or virtual machines (although I only have experience with the former). However, the interpretation of this point ("if you do not like these games" wait, why are we here again?) is rather confused. Misery is a state this topic is leaving soon, courtesy of AranBot. Speaking as one protein-based contaminant to another, I assure you we wouldn't enjoy Earth being sterilized. :P Drew: Does it really move that slowly? Every (exclusively non-scientific, admittedly) article I saw called it a jet of "radiation", which we literally wouldn't see until it hit us at the speed of light. However, the shape of the jet (and that we see it at all) on the photo suggests rather that it contains actual matter that radiates in several directions. In that case, we'd see it long before it hits. The question is still whether the jet's "advance guard" of super-hard cosmic radiation wouldn't be enough to at least ruin our day, if not free up space for a galactic bypass. Slarty: Wait a second. The last time I remember reading the topic, we were about ready to start welcoming our new rakshasi overlords. How were they dispatched? Speaking of dispatching and rakshasi, what happens to the Guild in the absence of its player? Posts: 8752 | Registered: Wednesday, May 14 2003 07:00 |

"Bullying" appears to be a grossly disproportionate term for this. Tarkin was just bullying Alderaan a bit. :P Posts: 8752 | Registered: Wednesday, May 14 2003 07:00 |

I will be in. If need be, I can take joint control of OoK (that's Prem's OoK, not Eph's) too, so I have a contact until I re-establish my faction. Last I remember, I was waiting for the Goblin Goblins to arrive at my walls. I can probably resolve that encounter too, but I have no clue if Slarty intended the encounter to be hostile or diplomatic. -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. I distribute and accept presents to and from friends. I gorge myself on chocolate with lots of cinnamon and coriander, and I enjoy meeting with family members and getting in a festive, warm spirit. The avatar does not scale up nor down. The preview in the form just has a fixed size, so the image will look scaled up until you save your profile. Spaces are not currently allowed in names. This is probably a bug, since Jumping Salmon evidently got his account before this happened, but I do not currently know how to fix this. If you really want a space, I can put one in for you after you register. The Blades Forge is now open for public use. Reviews are not yet available. They will be added some time before next weekend, hopefully. Syndication of the Spiderweb Tables and CSR (xml) may follow depending on success of the site. Beta-test organization (including mailing lists, private forums+downloads, automatic publishing and reply-scanning of Beta Calls here and on SV, the works) may come around the new year if there is demand for it. In general, the site right now is good only for hosting scenarios, graphics, scripts and articles. -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead.
