I don't want to appear uncompromising, so I propose a deal. We stop locking stupid topics, and you stop starting them. Kay?

Seriously, look at that clone thread. WTF?

I'm getting pretty irked about this. I'll contact support this evening to see what's happening on the server. If it's my fault, I may have to slow down PPP archiving which could become a real burden when the forum is very active.

tar.gz is probably the best way to offer anything for download. I don't know a platform that doesn't support it natively - I know OSX contains tar and gzip, and WinZip can extract tar.gz as well (not sure about compressing).

Privately, I've switched to 7zip for storing files. I've compared it to gz and bz2, and it is usually at least as efficient while being several times faster.

It's been a busy weekend, but I've managed to fix things up.

Slight change of plans: To avoid confusion, please use the newly created "Resource" type for anything that isn't actually News. Allowed extensions now include zip and several more.

Edit: Also, since I hadn't mentioned it here yet:

Updates once a day.

Perhaps you're not waiting long enough? The database is now around 600 MB in posts and may take a while to search, and Dreamhost must have been hosting my site on a slashdotted pron server lately judging by the performance.

- "Talking" added to BoE graphics categories.
- "Graphic template" added to News entry categories.

Just tag it incrementally. Enter tags, press "Add", enter more tags into the now empty field.

Policy question. They're not intended to be viewed in the browser, so I wouldn't necessarily class them with graphics.

I could make an extra type for "miscellaneous resources".

Or, since I established precedent with that chatlog, you could attach the xcf template to a news entry. I can add another category besides chatlogs - "Graphics templates" - that it could be placed into.

I forget what exactly is the matter, but some part of the date handling in the Endeavor breaks for dates before 1970. These dates are therefore set to 1970-01-01 00:00 GMT. Hence the 38th birthdays.

Edit: Which is 1969-12-31 evening where the server stands. That's why the birthdays were yesterday, not today.

You know, if the site suddenly does something it doesn't normally do, this is almost always because I am working on it at this very moment. The next time this happens, you can find out pretty much immediately by messaging me on AIM (RealArancaytar), while leaving this topic for actual bug reports. ;)

This was the first new year I spent pretty much alone. Parents were busy, my sister was elsewhere, so I just hung around IRC for a long time while watching the fireworks outside. :(

Today we know that light is both a particle and a wave. :)

Well, the archives look like that already. And the database backend is essentially a forum - it's just one that can't be posted to directly.

Right now I don't have time to implement something that will only be used in case of catastrophic collapse of UBB (after all, if the archives were directly writable while UBB survived, they would no longer be proper archives). But depending on urgency, I think as little as one week might be sufficient... :)

IRC takes two clicks, no local installation. Or one local installation and browser at all. Take your pick. ;)

I have a question, are internal server errors the same as 500 errors? Because I have never got 500 errors, only internal server errors, in fact I got one just now.
Internal Server Error = HTTP 500 Status code

A 500 error is an internal server error. Generally you are supposed to get HTTP status code 200, which means the connection worked and content is being downloaded. Occasionally a 301 or a 302 status code, which means the site moved. 404 is missing destination. 401 is forbidden, and i think that wraps it up...

This does, actually.

---

While the 500 error is not directly caused by the UBB software (it is a server message), the load on the server is a function of what software is running to display the pages. They wouldn't happen if UBB was more efficient with server resources.

Web servers are now optimized for different things than they were when UBB was new. UBB Classic uses flat files (it's older than cheap DBMS like MySQL and PostGre). Wide replacement of flat files with a separate, dedicated DBMS layer is one of the technological shifts that have occurred since then. A modern webserver configuration would assume that an application uses a database backend and may just not be cut out for interpreted scripts reading and writing large text files very quickly.

---

About OMS being cut short: Database hickup. No data loss, the topic record was set to a length of 194 for no obvious reason. Fixed now. I'd look into what caused it (I suspect it's happened at least once with another topic), but it's so rare and non-fatal that I'm putting it a bit further down the todo list.

Oh, ceterum censeo: Is there a reason besides tradition why we eschew the use of IRC in favor of AIM? Just a general question.

It's no problem for me personally (although you'll see Arancaytar42 instead of RealArancaytar in all chats), but you would be surprised how much more convenient it is for AIM users to join an IRC network than for non-AIM users to register at AOL.
