I am probably precluding the Procrastinator with this, but an analogy I once heard comes to mind.

Picture a man riding on a tiger. He's very firmly seated, and can keep the tiger from throwing him off. But as soon as he dismounts, the tiger will attack him. It's not an enviable position.
You can't rely on superior firepower forever - in the long run, the only way to live with your neighbors is to make peace with them, not to cow them into submission. It may seem like you're doing all you can to make peace, and the others aren't giving an inch, but the belligerence and retaliatory strikes are happening on both sides.

Superior firepower may buy peace, but it's not a stable peace. And like in the Cold War, the only way to sustain it is to keep building weapons. More and more.

Hey, you play Nationstates too? My nation is named Ermarian. :D

No, in spite of my many complaints, I do not have a complete and flawless political agenda ready for the unlikely event of becoming chief executive of any country. In fact, when it comes to things like the Iraq war, the chicken games with Iran and the oil crisis, most of what I'd have done differently would have had to be done a few years ago. By now, the world is already thoroughly hosed. :P

Israel is backed by the US though, and even after Iraq, it is hard to find an ally with more firepower. Incontinental firepower.

Besides, doesn't Israel have nuclear weapons?

Classic. Is it just me, or have a lot of regulars here played this game? I recall references to it in Alo's monikers.

You have to play that game at least once before you become a true Polaran, you realize. :)

Dikiyoba hopes you didn't spend too long attempting that! It is, in fact, intentional gibberish. Except for the "d" at the beginning, and that was just to make an alliteration.

We're doing threats now?

There is a rockface in Riven that contains the word "RAWA" three pixels high. They say it stands for Richard A. Watson, one of the developers, but I know better than to trust those cover-up attempts! :P

It's not so much the hair as the uncertainty. I have long hair, and yet I don't think anyone has mistaken me for a girl. (At least, I hope so. I might need to let my beard grow out some more. :P )

With Snafta, I remembered from some topic that he is a guy, and I was still confused for a while.

Edit: The letters can't be scrambled - there is no way something that short contains the letters in "xrazxar". You could waste some time thinking of 1:1 letter transcriptions, but my conclusion can be summed up with "... rogolath anyahersin ran!" (see the RP). :P

Ich spreche Deutsch, I speak English, je ne parle pas Francais (Mort), and I speak a few sentences in a various fantasy lingos, a few of them self-invented.

Ezkedan ezkarzat, cór'tat ezkedoran. Avistes morzul, ar nurmontes cal. Aa' menle nauva calen ar' ta hwesta e ale'quenle'; xa madatuné kulamé.

Also see this post.

Edit: Also, my number of known languages fluctuates between 0 and infinity, so I checked all those boxes because I could. The poll is worthless anyway...

Yes. A fugue, in C minor I believe. I uploaded it
here.

I never saw an option to play the music; perhaps it was never implemented on PC, or Jeff took it out long before I found the games. This file is downloaded off Motrax's Lair in 2001 (not sure if the site still exists, or if it still has the file; I'll check), which incidentally is totally unrelated to Sir Motrax of Exile (afaik).

The best thing you can think of. Times 10. Times 10.

"Times 100" sounds like a lot, but for those of us less gifted in applying mathematical operations to theology, can you describe that in more concrete terms? :)

So you don't see anything wrong with his behavior? I am not sure what is personally important for you for you (anniversary of grandmother's death? your friend's death?), so I am not sure what analogy to make to explain how I feel. Perhaps if when you posted about death of your online friend somebody replied "she had it coming, stupid ..." you'd feel a similar emotion.

You misunderstood my point, I believe.

My point was that my hostility is not directed at any member of the group that holds these views, but at the group and the views. "I was bashing Neonazi idiots, not you" was implying that whether my hostility could be applied to OM (you saw that he immediately took it to be directed at him) was fully dependent on whether he has ties to this group. I hold no personal grudge against anyone, even if some people think things I think are stupid and/or dangerous.

[Ouch. The above might go into the imitation thread as "Yet another procrastinator.]

The emotional analogy makes little sense. To nearly all of us, the holocaust is an atrocity that we have no personal relations to. Taking it to a personal level may be the only way we can fully express our disgust at it, but it doesn't really lead anywhere - not even towards ensuring it does not repeat.

Saying "Hitler was crazy" is easy. It is far harder - and far more worthwhile - to ask: "Why did he have such success?" "Why did he think that way?" and "How can we prevent someone like him from doing it again?"
