I know Jeff has posted in the past that the tutorial sections work well with his target audience, and that a lot of players need to walk straight into them.

I think that makes sense, but it would be really, really nice to have an option to skip the tutorial. It wouldn't be hard to make it something you can't activate by accident. I mean, even Exile 3 let you turn off that !@#$ instant help.

Seratis, congrats on finishing!

Muffin, please stop acting like a mod. You have been asked this already. Although it was a little weird to revive this topic, it makes sense -- the new post is relevant and directly refers to previous posts in this thread.

Random encounters can be interesting, though it's very rare these days. The original Final Fantasy title from 1987, which was almost entirely random encounters, is a prime example of this.

I love the fact that you only made that comment after editing the post five different times. I find that it's often helpful to ask yourself what the heck is going on at the beginning of any thought process, rather than at the end. But perhaps I'm just cynical.

That said, I'm glad you were able to share in my helpless laughter.

Clearly Marlenny wins at polling, and only because of Jeff's participation. :P

(1) What's your main goal in life?
I had a list of these once. Mainly, I suppose, I want to be happy. Unfortunately, that entails a lot of smaller goals.

(4) Tell us an anecdote of anything that happened to you today.
Well, about 45 minutes ago, I woke up. Not a very interesting day yet. The other day I spent an hour and a half attempting to drive a large van full of kids to a horse farm over roads that had washed out in last week's storm.

(5) What's your current Philosophy on life?
I'm really not sure I have one anymore.

(6) If you created a deadly disease, what would you call it?
Death's Little Helper

(7) What should you be doing right now?
Driving to Boston.

(8) If this were Southpark, what character do you think you'd be?
Sparky the Dog. Clearly.

(9) What occupations you wanted to be when you were a kid ?
For many years, up through middle school, my answer was "theoretical physicist or science fiction writer." Hah.

(10) What happened to those dreams?
I've changed a lot since then.

(16) Do you usually walk around your house with sandals or barefoot?
Barefoot, or with socks. When I actually lived in a house this fall, however, it was with sandals.

(17) Have you ever gotten something you really wanted but thought you wouldn't get?
Yeah. Isn't that how love always works?

Is it possible to get past that 90 strength door without cheating, though? By my math, you'd need 30 Tool Use and 80 points between the three spell skills and Unlock Doors. I don't think that's achievable even if you don't put a single skill point elsewhere.

I play Warlocks, a great web-based implementation of Waving Hands, an abstract simultaneous-action strategy game which compares most easily to Chess, but is quite different. I haven't been very active the past year, but from 2004 to 2006 I might well have spent more time playing Warlocks than any other game in my life, including Angband. As a result of all that time spent in state-space analysis, plus the obscurity of the game, I can coddle my ego by claiming to be one of the best in the world at a deviously complex game. Go me.

Unfortunately, having the potential to be an oldbie really just means you don't leave.

I think we can generalize the rule about raising karma, getting custom titles, and becoming a mod to include oldbiehood. If you ask, it's guaranteed not to happen.

Does time matter in any Geneforge game? in Geneforge Series

Time doesn't matter in Geneforge.

In Exile 3 and Avernum 3, there are two major things that happen after a certain amount of time, but the amount of time is fairly generous.

Time does play a role in one of the Spiderweb-made Blades scenarios, but you are told about it explicitly there.

Are agents better shapers than, well, shapers!?! in Geneforge Series
Raven v. Writing Desk

This is actually untrue for Geneforge 2 and 3. Creations gain experience (and therefore levels) at a rate totally indepedent of their own levels. Thus, if a Shaper creates a Fyora with enough bonuses to be at level 20, and an Agent creates a Fyora at level 10, the Shaper Fyora will always be 10 levels higher.

Also, Blessing Magic maxes out its effect strength (though not its duration) fairly quickly, so Shapers have no problem casting buffs that are just as good as Agents.

That would be a pretty huge penalty in Avernum, though, given that your opportunities to earn XP are strictly finite.

I'm a big fan of the way Arcana (an obscure, poorly-translated SNES RPG) handles it. If anyone dies, game over.

I suppose it doesn't make a difference since most players will just reload whenever anyone dies, regardless of the game's consequences.

Well, part of instinct is purely biological instinct just based on how we are set up, and part of it is essentially basic intellect, mostly from early childhood. People who were seriously deprived of food as toddlers tend to have instinctual reactions to food that others don't have, for example.

Jeff has said, however, that this is more or less the reason that PCs can no longer summon demons, as they could in Exile.
