Making of Avernum 1 - 3 in Blades of Avernum Editor

Basically, we don't have to worry about it, because no one ever finishes their Exile III remake. We have had a Resident Evil remake (Domestic Evil), and I've been told that New Life is basically Final Fantasy 7, but we don't generally worry about those. Probably it's not entirely legal, but no one really cares.

In short, you can do it, but if it's a Spiderweb game you'll almost certainly not get distributed, and you won't get nearly as much respect as you would if you made an original work. Heck, if people are so short of ideas, I've got a few cool ones that I'll never find time to make.

It doesn't look that much simpler than Frame Animation. But at least you don't need to exploit bugs to use it. :P

This is one of those ideas that pops up every now and then, along with collaboration on scenarios. They sometimes get shouted down, but sometimes we just don't bother - after all, no one ever comes close to finishing them.

There also seems to be many ways to interpret the article I wrote, though I only meant for there to be one. This is NOT an article about VoDT being preachy, or at least it is not meant as one. Rather, it accuses VoDT of shallowness. It's not my view that the scenario bashes you over the head with "Pollution is bad! Pollution is Bad! Pollution is bad! Pollution is Bad!", but that it says it once... and then completely ignores the issues attached to that.

VoDT takes a modern issue and places it in a setting where it doesn't really belong, and then does nothing with that issue. Suppose you played a scenario where your country had been ruled by an evil dictator, but you were invaded by a great empire who deposed him, claiming that you possessed great artifacts of evil magic that could wreak havoc on the world. You play a guerilla trying to drive your occupiers out.

Loaded situation. Now, what if that scenario made nothing of the possibilities of devastating anarchy once your occupiers are gone, or of another dictator taking power? What if it never addresses the issue that the men you kill came to help free you? What if it's just a basic hack 'em up?

That scenario may not be 'preachy', but it would be a very shallow treatment of a very complicated issue. That's how I interpret VoDT.

Speaking as a designer, it's my firm belief that entertainment IS art. For a scenario to be fun, it has to be well made. It can't be good art if it's not also entertaining. The two are irrevocably intertwined.

In VoDT, Jeff made a decision that pollution would be the 'baddie'. I guess that he thought that since it's something everybody KNOWS is a bad thing, he didn't need to treat it with a lot of depth (as compared to A Small Rebellion). The 'message' of the scenario is pretty simple. "If you pollute, bad stuff happens."

I don't know that Jeff really intended it to have a 'moral'... but he did touch on an important issue without giving it the respect it deserved. Basically, I'm saying that Jeff's mistake wasn't so much that he presented a shallow view of the pollution issue, but that he included it at all.

I don't think that every scenario needs a moral - only one of my six does. The article is simply an attempt to provide guidance for those who wish to do so. VoDT wasn't the best example, but I used it because it was one that everyone would know.

You need two people who are both willing to do all the work. If you treat a collaboration as a way of getting the job done easier, I think it's doomed to fail.
