It occurred to me that this is where the Rational Mind "bug" really is a stinker - in Hippocrates' build - Western science over spirituality. But unfortunately the Rational Mind skill seems to work against ALL items, and that would include first aid kits if it includes torches, no? :( [ Tuesday, September 04, 2007 16:08: Message edited by: Ming ] Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |

On second thought, a "Weird Meat" t-shirt with the graphic blown up big and the text beneath it would be awesome (and incredibly obscure). Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |

Which Spiderweb game has the best game art - and I mean the splash screens, character portraits, and skill portraits, not the actual game pixel graphics. Which (recent) game art is your least favorite? Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |
Challenging Nethergate "Role-Play" Character Builds in Nethergate

I've read some people going for "singleton" campaigns, but I like my challenges to be in flavor with the setting, so I'll throw out some challenging builds and see what you guys think. The idea is to avoid investing only in the commonly agreed upon "best stats". Also a challenge will be to resist the temptation as the characters level up, to add points to the typical "best" stats, and keep focusing on the "role-play" stats. A point added here or there, for something like Armor Use as the game progesses is allowed. The point is, like a single-character campaign, to focus character builds on a commonly agreed on "weaker" (but not impossible to play) skill focus. Since Nethergate does not have classes, we can make our own. Here are a few examples I came up with: Hippocrates, Roman Medic. Focus on First Aid and Herbcraft. A decent slinger to back up the team. Hardy and healthy (toughness/good health) from taking good care of his own body and drinking herbal supplements - ha). I would probably sacrifice a point of Dex. and add a point of Intelligence to the screen shot below, since as a "doctor" he should be well learned and this would help with some of the other things tied to Intelligence, like item lore and rune reading. Antaeus, Roman Wrestler. Focus on Strength, Endurance, Hardiness, Defense. Some points (about half of what is put in hardiness/defense) in Roman Training, melee weapons. Mighty Warrior and Toughness traits. Idea is to have a "tank" character who isn't the best at landing blows but absorbs a lot of pain even when circumstances deprive him of armor. For the Celts: Perhaps some kind of Faerie-Focused Female character with Druid spells appropriate and Faerie Blood/Faerie Familiar Traits. Or a Celtic Beastmaster, who is a warrior first with the Beastmaster trait but dabbles in Druid Skills for summoning purposes. Any other ideas? I can still remember all of the C64 Ultima III songs and have a bunch of MIDI files somewhere....so yeah, I can see how music would be good. More "ambient" music is probably better, though - something like the Neverwinter Nights stuff. BTW, anyone notice that when you go outdoors in Blades of Avernum's demo scenario in the Valley, it says "No birds fly overhead, things appear dead" (paraphrasing) that the background sound for outdoors has lots of birds chirping...? :P [ Tuesday, September 04, 2007 09:02: Message edited by: Ming ] Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |

So what's the best Roman fighter "build"? Am I right: Primary Focus on - Strength Endurance Roman Training Melee Armor Use .... etc...? Agree with: 1. Javelins should be recoverable after a battle Just not enough of the Javelins around, and slings do good damage without requiring any ammo. Is a Roman Slinger worth it or are slings gimped at higher levels? Either make them recoverable or have enemies drop more Javelins (I've seen a couple of Goblins drop a handful so far). Recoverable javelins remind me of the scene in Excalibur when Mordred retrieves his javelin from the corpse of some poor Round Table Knight... :D [ Tuesday, September 04, 2007 03:52: Message edited by: Ming ] Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |

Thanks for the tips! I got my Nethergate: Res code this afternoon (no holiday for Spiderweb!) I'm pretty absorbed with the game right now so maybe I'll just hold out for the CD. Either way looks like I have some ways to try the saves thanks to your help if I get the urge to play Blades before the CD arrives. Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |
Maddness or Genius??? in General

Obsession should not be confused with "genius". Socially inept/non-functional people obsessed with one particular thing tend to be called "genius" improperly, I think. Many of the "geniuses" I've known tend to dabble in a bit of everything, like Galileo. Their minds hunger for information of all kinds, and they do not excel at only one thing. I think that we tend to overrate some folks who simply hyper-focus on one talent to the point that they seem prolific in a genius-like sense....but we're often assuming that they can produce what they do with the same sort of lives that the typical Joe leads. We don't imagine that they might go days without taking a bath or talking to others, for instance. Is that genius or madness? I'd say the latter. Just my 2 cents. I was about to post this question, good to know which ones I should go for first! For a sec there I thought "Exodus" was an Ultima III remake scenario (but then checked the walkthru). Speaking of which, are there any Ultima remake scenarios? Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |

I just ordered from Amazon: "Depths of Madness: The Dungeons" Erik Scott de Bie; Mass Market Paperback; $6.99 "Girl Genius: Omnibus Edition #1" Phil Foglio; Paperback; $10.17 "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Lost Cult" E. E. Knight; Mass Market Paperback; $6.99 "The Engines of God" Jack McDevitt; Paperback; $7.99 The last is sci-fi (not religious), the rest is just for fun. I have a thing for H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu-esque works and related mythos writings, and the Tomb Raider book is supposed to play on that theme. Phil Foglio does the artwork for some of the games here, so I decided to check out the Girl Genius stuff. Thanks - I recall a library where I found one scroll in the 4th bookcase, and you reminded me of a pair of doors beyond it with a description like "the area beyond is likely heavily guarded" and I think I passed on that. I'll go back! :) Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |

First off, as a n00b (though I did buy Exile:Escape from the Pit eons ago), let me say that I'm really impressed by the community here, and the user made scenarios and custom graphics (Louvre?). I also really like that Spiderweb took the time to redo so many games (like this one) to work with today's operating systems. I think the Avernum UI is intuitive and slick, if lacking in the "arms up! arms down!" type of sprite animation I grew up on with the Commodore 64 Ultimas (on second thought, maybe that's a good thing). Anyway, really great to see all of this old-skool RPG action, but nice and updated. And good to see people supporting it! Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |

Just bought: 1. Nethergate: Res, 2. and the $15 promotional CD for Blades of Avernum. 3. Exile: Escape from the Pit, sometime in the 1990's. Until some recent google searching for "Ultima-like RPG's", I had no idea that all this game development was going on. Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |

Thanks Kelandon, so if the CD is the full version then I'll just reinstall that and just use my saved games from whatever directory? I like how the Spiderweb games don't save in some sub folder buried under Program Files. I'm saving mine in My Documents / Game Name Save Folder. You mean "the goblin pit"? Where you go for the token? I thought I was pretty thorough, except of course for places with...locked doors! :P Do you mean a scroll? Because no one there is willing to teach me that spell, no friendly Goblins, far as I saw...! Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |

While waiting for my Nethergate: Res. key to come via e-mail, I thought I'd try the BOA game as I'm supposed to get the 15 dollar promotional CD shipped along with it (even though the website said "no shipping needed"(!). Will the code that comes with the CD match the key-----meaning, can I download BOA now and will the key code that ships to me with the CD work with it? Sorry if this question makes no sense. I suppose I could just keep my save games somewhere if it doesn't work. And if this really seems to make no sense, well, I ordered the games last night and don't know what to expect yet in my "order processed" receipt. So maybe I'll get a BOA key in there as well... (Playing as Celts) Character Creation: 1.) Is the only way to change the default Special Skills (2 characters have them, 2 don't) to use the Character Editor? I think its a bit odd when I delete the character and create a new one that "Bruce" with his pre-selected special skill reappears (Woodsmanship or something). I would suggest a list of special skills to choose from after you delete a character. And one point bonus to one of your main stats if you opt not to have one. 2.) No "tool use" available for Celts. Something should be said about this during character creation, because I'm currently stuck with a Celt team that can't open locked doors...! :P And I haven't seen anyone yet who will teach me the Craft spell needed for that. So, I would make Character deletion a true deletion like "Custom Character" in Avernum, and I would at least give the Druid in the starting town the Craft spell for opening locks, or give the Celts a really gimped version of Tool Use. Otherwise, people like me will realize after 2 hours of play that they have a lot of backtracking to do to open locked doors....... On the other hand, I will just wait for my code to come in e-mail and get my character editor going (gotta get rid of the buggy "Rational Mind" trait, too), but I'm guessing other people who haven't bought the game yet will be frustrated by the Celts inability to open doors My fighters' strength has never been enough to bash down a door, btw. Enjoying the game and eagerly awaiting my reciept e-mail with activation code.... W.M. These are the only ones I've run across, there may be other mundane items that can't be used by the Rational Mind character ability/trait. I bought this game nonetheless because I really like the replayability of going through as a Roman or a Celt. I also picked up the promotional CD for Blades of Avernum, but another "bug" is with your shopping cart - if I don't ask for a CD for Nethergate, then it says "no shipping required" even when the Blades CD should ship. Loving the games, though! Posts: 102 | Registered: Monday, September 3 2007 07:00 |
